Quick 857DW+ vs. WEP 2-in-1 Hot Air Test - LFC

  • It probably goes without saying that a Hot Air Station in a different class to my current one would be better - but I think there's a lot of value in doing comparisons so you can see and understand first-hand the difference that tools can make in one situation or another. Sometimes good tools are just a quality of life upgrade - sometimes they're necessary to progress.
    The Quick 857DW+ can be purchased at Banggood with the link below. This is an affiliate link, I get a small commission for sales. This was where I bought mine.

    Love your content Adamant IT. I’m personally not into soldering etc, but videos like this show the amount of effort, time and resources required to effectively repair a simple faulty chip etc . It also shows people why things cost what they do, especially when people think simply “it’s a $5 chip and a few mins work” why should I pay $xxx for repairs. Like many jobs, it’s what is done behind these scenes eg setup costs of equipment and job training etc which you also have to take into account. Your videos have always been interesting and informative. Keep up the great work 🥰🥰🥰. Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 👋🥰

    Great demonstration. I always found my cheap hot air gun (just like your WEP design) not really hot and took quick a lot time to take out components. I have put 957DW+ ( RMB 430 ) in my basket list on Taobao but I haven't confirmed the order for a long time because I couldn't found any reason to pay around three times in price to get this one. Your this video helped me to make decision to confirm my order. I don't like the handle design of 857DW+, so I chose 957DW+ instead. Thumbs up for you.

    Bought my first bass guitar from a pawn shop for £120 but it was actually a decent one. Sold it to my friend for an extra £100 cos that's what he offered. 8 years later he still plays the same bass in his band. Thank you to the person that gave up learning bass, I did too but at least I made an extra hundo out of it.

    Buy the best you can afford for the feature set you need, not want. You will be disappointed far fewer times than buying cheap. Your work will typically reflect the results as well. 25 years of machine shop experience. As you mature in any given industry the opportunity to upgrade and improve will become easier, but even at my stage in life I still stick to my opening statement.

    I've just got the Quick hot air station you used here. I watched this video when it was uploaded but I hadn't realised I'd picked the same one when I put the order down a couple of days ago. I don't have any jobs for it yet but I hope it will be good when I need it. I have a couple of SMD practice PCBs so I'm going to get some practice in with it and also some manual soldering too with my TS100, which I have no problem with and that if anything I find rather easy.

    A little tip though, the metal HDD lid will be wicking a load of that heat away. Same with the tweers. I'd recommend getting some ceramic ones so they don't act as a heatsink and keep the heat in the board.

      @AdamAmbrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      heating the board from the underside (using an iron, a crepe maker or similar), even if just to 120-150 degrees, helps with this enormously. I struggled to get a VRAM to flow for a long time, by using a heater from the other side the job was done in a matter of minutes

  • @zx8401ztv
    @zx8401ztv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A very nice bit of kit, makes your job easyer and quicker.
    Maybe if you are heating a chip that only has gullwing pins, you could switch to the smaller tube and back the air volume off a bit, keep the jet more confined.
    I'm likely talking crap, well less than i normally do :-D
    I dont need a hot air station.... yet!, the quick looks handy though.

      I'm not sure. It's decent, but it depends what you're doing. So far this station has managed everything except advanced stuff (large BGA) and to an extent, new-gen consoles, where it struggles but gets there eventually.
      There's some decent 1000w Atten stations around that will blow this out the water now, but they're still more expensive than this unit - so it depends on budget.

    I have read reviews informing us that the Quick comes with a euro plug and as such does not have a earth?
    My question is simple. Does the cable have an earth or is it class 2?
    If so changing the cable or cutting off the plug and replacing with an earthed one makes more sense?
    FYI I own a WEP 898BD+ I increased the airflow by taking off the handle and removing some of the restricting plastic grill on the inside.
    This also speeded up the heat up of the wand by around 30%

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, yes mine came with a Euro plug, completely forgot about that in the video! Cable is earthed, so just chop the plug off and put on whatever plug you need.

  • @piernov
    @piernov 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For your 820-3023 board, don't bother, they have a common issue that's not the RAM chips themselves, it's either the CPU or the PCB itself (still not really clear). Reflowing the RAM sometimes revive them for a short while but they end up failing again.
    I personally started with a Yihua 898D and man… what a nightmare. I really can't recommend getting that to anyone, even if it's cheap. I got a TS100 and a Quick 861DW now and it is *really* a game changer. Iron made the most difference for me, but hot air is also night and day. I had so many quality issues that shouldn't happen (plastic crumbling on both the iron and hot air handle, even melting on the hot air handle, cables going bad, even the pins of the mains plug just breaking off) that I'd stay far away from any of these stations. And of course it just doesn't cut it for a lot of jobs. Yes you can rework some boards like your random cheap Quanta/Compal but you still have to take care not to cook them and it's really not comfortable. When you move to MacBook boards it's a different world. Much more QFN and BGAs chips, and of course much higher thermal mass in the power planes. The cheap garbage stations are really struggling and just cannot get the job done.
    When you have this kind of garbage tools you really think you're too dumb to get soldering right so it can definitely be a major source of demotivation. And of course killing lots of boards and chips that could otherwise be repairable…

    Got exactly that Quick station to replace GDDR5 memory chips after struggeling with a fake 858D. I use no reduction tip for that. The Quick is so much quieter, faster and more powerful than the cheap one. Do not waste money on trashy cheap units! TS100 is fantastic too.

  • @Foobar_The_Fat_Penguin
    @Foobar_The_Fat_Penguin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the WEP as well. Back when I bought it, the "new style" stations with the heating element integrated in the tip were like 4-5x the price and completely out of my range. The only question then was: Do I buy a branded "old style" station or a cheap Chinese knockoff? Went with the knockoff, and can't complain. But I also can't generally disagree with your assessment. The hot air gun is more like an added bonus. "Buy this soldering station, and we'll throw in a hot air gun for free!"
    As for soldering portion: The soldering iron appears to be a clone of the Hakko FX-888, so any tip for that will fit the WEP, giving you access to the full range of tips from Hakko. Furthermore, the WEP already comes with a broad selection of tips, and you can get new ones from Aliexpress for less than a dollar for a bundle of five (shipped). Whereas the "new style" tips are ~10 Euro - for a single tip. So if money *is* an issue, consider the tips as well as the iron itself. The TS-100, for instance, comes with only one tip. If you include a decent range of tips for different applications, you can easily double the investment cost compared. And stupid newbie mistakes that ruin your tip are much less scary when they cost only 20 cent.
    If I had to bottom-line it: The WEP is soldering technology that was state of the art 20 years ago. Since then, technology has moved on, and great improvements have been made. But it's not like people back then couldn't do their jobs. *shrug*

    10:20 Strictly speaking the laws of thermodynamics forbid this. The new station can put out a higher temperature, which feels more "hot", or a higher airflow, which improves the ability of the air to transfer heat to your hand and again feels more "hot", but barring COP>1 systems, watt for watt, one watt of electricity creates exactly one watt of heat. For heat generating perposes, this is an efficiency of 100%. No more, no less.

      i understand what adam is trying to say. even if we ignore the better air pump in good quality station, by efficiency he is saying that the cheap hot air station might display 400c temps but in reality they will be putting out 325-350c. thats just what you get in such cheap products. better quality stations will put out air that is very close to the set temperature because they are properly calibrated and use better controllers unlike cheap ones

    If that soldering iron on the combo station takes Hakko tips (T18 or 900M, for the FX888 soldering handle) then the Chinese knock-off tips are indeed terrible. However original Japanese-manufacture Hakko tips are a lot better. You can get industrial/production tips with specific tip sizes and shapes. I've got a couple of cheap Chinese soldering irons that take these tips and the Hakko tips I bought direct from Japan last much much longer than the original bits that came with the Banggood irons.

    I kinda agree , kinda disagree on the startup stuff. I think you'd have done enough research before even buying the cheap stuff, and if that's the case you're probably more interested than you think...
    may as well pony up for at least mid range stuff. I'd rather buy something once knowing it's good rather than have bought 2 items hoping I could make the cheap one work.
    TLDR I've bought cheap crap before and .....well it's usually crap lmao.
    even if you ended up not wanting it I say you have better chances of selling it off over trying to sell off the cheap one.
    but hey we all got our reasons 🤷

    • @Adamant_IT

      Yea in retrospect I should've just set both to the maximum they were capable of. But I can tell you from experience that setting the WEP to 380 probably wouldn't have helped it much. It just doesn't have the airflow to put the heat down on heavy boards.

    It bugs me when people say you need to buy the best right out of that gate. It's terrible advice. Often there's a learning curve, and it's easy to speak from experience. However, if you're getting into auto detailing, for example, and you go out and buy a high end polisher and don't know what you're doing, you're going to burn up the paint real fast.

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's always a balancing act. I think there's a lot of value in starting with cheap tools so you can understand their limitations and know what the expensive ones are doing for you. But also it's tricky if you're struggling with something and don't know if it's the tool or the technique.

    Sorry it doesn't make too much sense for me.
    If you are blowing more air you are reducing the temperature of the heating element faster => less heat delivered.
    If they have same power than the reason you found differences between the two must be an issue with displayed temperature and airflow reading

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The heating element doesn't run flat out all the time. It runs at max to reach the set temp and then it backs off to maintain temperature. So the more air you can pump out, the harder you can run the heating element to get more heat.
      Same as with a soldering iron, the power draw drops right off while it's maintaining temperature.

    • @samuelec
      @samuelec 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi @@Adamant_IT thanks for your reply, this is and was perfectly clear to me.
      It still valid that more airflow more heat get dissipated from the heating element which in turn has to compensate sucking more energy in order to keep the desired temperature.
      Now it could be that the "Quick" one can heat the heating element more and/or faster than the cheap one (when the airflow is the same) or it could be that temperatures set on both are wrong.
      In order to benchmark them we should have a way to measure both airflow and temperature regardless what those hot air stations let you setup.

    The metal enclosure you have the boards sitting on is acting like a big heat sink, sucking all the heat away from the board. using a board holder that suspends the board would be better as the heat in the board wouldn't get sucked away making the parts easier and quicker to remove. never have your work piece sitting on metal.

    I see your point about bot overspending as a beginner but with tools it's a bit different than with musical instruments. You might as well start out with a very cheap and very bad soldering iron or station and find out soldering is not for you because it's incredibly hard to do and super tedious. And give up, never knowing taht it was the tool that held you back.
    I bought a 3 in one soldering, desoldering and hot air station once, for 350 € even. It was utter crap. Especially the desoldering gun was so weak it was completely dysfunctional. I returned it. If I had relied only on my experience with it I would have gotten out of hardware repairs very quickly.
    So long comment, short conclusion. Beginners should not get cheap tools. They should get reasonably good tools that won't make them despair while trying to get the hang of things. There is no point in making it harder for oneself than it needs to be.
