  • The Eurasian or common Blackbird (Turdus merula) is one of the most common and well known garden and woodland birds. Over five million pairs breed in the UK each year and in cold years more than 10 million more migrate here for the winter.
    In this video you can learn about the appearance, diet, behaviour and nesting of this often overlooked species of garden bird.

    One of my favourite birds, I love to hear them singing early in the morning, it makes going to work a bit more cheerful, super film with some great nest scenes, I hope you continue to make more films.

      Thanks. I love to champion the overlooked common species. It may be a bit of a controversial one but my favourite bird is actually the Feral Pigeon! They are super smart and are one of the only bird species to have shown self-recognition. I will definitely be doing a video on them in the future.

      Great! I am pretty fond of them too. When I used to do wildlife rehab, I must have hand reared at least 200!

    Great video. I love Blackbirds and we always have them in the garden and many nest around in summer when I love to see their young come to feed. We have one with a white feather in his tail and I am happy to say this is his third year with us. Keep up the good work. Greetings, Julie.

      They are a great character. I remember when I was at school, a pair built a nest outside the classroom window and I spent the preceding weeks in awe. I learnt nothing that term.

    👍🤚my new friend Liam very nice documentary or video on the blackbirds. I think it was really good of you to point out how most of the time they are brown or tan until they reach full adult and it is the males. I do love our red wing black birds which are different then this video but those sweet sounds they make are unmistakable.
    Thanks for sharing have a good night take care from Florida 💕

      Thank you very much for your kind comment and for watching the video :) We do have a species of thrush in the UK (for winter at least) called a redwing but their red is nothing near as spectacular as the Red wing blackbirds you get in Florida.
      Cheers, Liam

    Hello Liam, I just find your channel and I'm loving it! I do have a question, I was trying to find some tips to care of a baby blackbird that I found on my garden, she have fell from the nest from my 2 floor roof, so it was a big impact over the gravel and bricks. She has little to none feathers when I get her, I tried to put again on the nest, but no success, then I hang a basket out of the window just below the nest entrance to see if the parent feed her, but no success again. Now she are thriving and starting to learn how to break, soon she will be starting to feed her self, 8 days since I found her. But the my real concern is because 2 days ago she stated to sneeze, at beginning was short and not frequent, but now it's like 4 to 6 sneezes in sequence, and sound very wet. She has been feed with earth worms mostly, some dry mealworms(soaked in water over night, but dried on paper befor feeding). Any ideas what these sneezes can be? She is eating ok, she is very active and fully feathered. Thank you soo much. I'm looking forward to hear from you ;)
    Congrats for the channel again

      Hi Ju. Well done on rearing the bird thus far. I have never heard of one sneezing before so unfortunately I cant offer you any help with that question. If you manage to speak to a vet or someone who does know, can you let me know what you find out please.

      Hello, it's me again... just to update you on what happened with my baby bird.. so, as I told you, she was sneezing a lot, a couple of days after she started to breathe from her mouth (opened beak), she completely stopped produce sounds, you could hear just a very low whisper, just the air coming out of her beak, apart from that she was ok. Eating, playing, flying... I went to the wildlife vet and they have told me that she had a parasite in her lungs (red worm/ gapeworm/ Syngamus trachea) and I bring her back home with 3 doses of 2 medications ( 1 for pain and 1 to kill the parasites). She was bad. The vet told us she may die soon. But after 3 days of treatment, she started to breathe normally, and even started to sing again. Everything went well, we where keeping an eye on her to make sure she is 100% before releasing. But unfortunately she felt ill again, paralysed legs, another trip to the vet, and now they said it was a neurological problem...and the only thing we could do was physiotherapy on the legs to see if she could control her balance again. After 1 day she died. But at least we did all we could. And we have tried hard. BTW, All the vet and medication was free of charge. Here they dont charge for wild animals treatments. So, hope you get this message and could use for something some day. Thanks for your videos and be safe.

      @@julianamacedo1721 hello. Thanks for the update and I am very sorry the bird didnt make it through after all your hard work and love. Where do you live? Vets in the UK are meant to treat wildlife for free as well but that often means euthanasia unfortunately.

    • @julianamacedo1721
      @julianamacedo1721 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AShotOfWildlife yeah, it's very sad, but not for the time and effort but because they meant to be free and I thought she could make it since we have saved her life twice :) I live in Antrim, Northern as Ireland, and the clinic that I went to didn't charge me a penny. Both times, and first time I went there on Sunday. And they tried hard aswell. It was told that if the bird for any reason became to suffer, the beat thing it was to put to sleep, but they've tried before and I'm very grateful for that. ;)
