I had no idea you could get solar irrigation :O total game changer, and no cringing at the electricity bill :) Now all I need are rain powered grow lights for January ;)
@@eliandkate Hmm, wonder if I could get one of those full spectrum bulbs for my bedroom light, which is where I start my seeds (southeast facing window) might do me and the plants both some good :D
Looks great Eli, I am hoping to get a few irrigation systems set up this year in various parts of the garden, I figure filling a water butt every now and again is easier than watering the whole garden 😊
100%! My first year with new garden beds, I'd been eaten alive by mosquitoes while spending 2-3hrs trying to water everything. I very quickly learnt how to set up irrigation drips systems with manual tap timers are much easier than watering by hose 😆
Hihi, setting up these solar watering systems really is annoying. But when the job is done it makes life so much easier. 😍 But I have to say something that does not even have anything to do with garden in any ways. The scottish football fans are doing a great job as advertising Scotland as a great country. It's such a joy to see them and how they make friends and behave. You can be proud of your folks. Greetings from Germany. And good luck for the rest of the EM. They earn it so much to get further.
Oh I’m glad to hear they are behaving. It’s always a worry when large groups are drinking and celebrating (commiserating) and how one or two can ruin it.
@@eliandkate Not one of nearly 200k is behaving in any way bad. They are a joy to all the country. They are only lovely in any way you can imagine. Other countries guests doesn't behave in any way so nice and joyful as they do.
When I add irrigation it rains, when I water it rains. Too bad that didn’t work last year in drought. We finally have rain-Thanks for sending some over😂. I’ll send you some of this heat. I’m only dressed like you because of mosquitoes. Nifty water setup. I love our irrigation. We’d have loads of plums and apples, but we got too cold when they were blooming. I think we have 1 plum and 3 apples. We did have a great strawberry harvest, a handful of honey berries, a few blueberries coming and maybe a great blackberry year.
I also lost all but one tree of pears, most of my cherries and all my plums to a 2 week freezing spell just at the wrong time! Apples were mostly later and look ok. At least I have one late hard pear tree. I had a "Pearpocalypse" last year with a crazy ridiculous amount of pears and I did manage to preserve a great deal and haven't run out yet.
Hey so , I’ve have inherited some old fruit trees and added some new ones in last couple yrs to my allotment. It’s amazing the fruit you got off the small tower potted apple tree. I think moving forward you need to choose how you want it to grow. These trees look like they are screaming for the tops to be lopped off so it can focus on fruit below. One thing I’ve learnt is to remove leaves and branches from around the trunk for maybe 10 cm at least, make a chimney for central air circulation. I learnt that staking trees can reduce their ability to grow strong. And the angle you did isn’t what I learnt was best. What’s best to support against prevailing winds etc. 😊 Lopping off the top, reducing excess branches will allow it to grow strong, without splints, which can hinder good growth. I also decided to prune on goblet style. And make sure not to let it grow above lopping off height (I’m 5.3 so 2m is fine by me, and the trees produce more fruit than I can process at that height. Lest not waste time energy or apples :-) ps please can you clarify if the raised beds the trees are in are open bottomed or closed, this affects root growth and stability. I was amazed at how deep and far some crop, roots grow, 15 ft for asparagus.
Thank you for your concern Kirsten but all is in hand 😀 Over the last few years I’ve shown how to prune these trees to help production as well as how productive the trees are after. That pruning happens late summer, not now, and the tops are part of that pruning and will get pruned again. I explained about the staking in the video, both why it would be beneficial not to and why I had to as well as why I was staking the way I did. 😀
I had solar irrigation in my greenhouse a few years ago, and it was excellent... but the utter faff of taking it out for the winter and putting it back in again in spring meant I never used it again! I guess it's worse because I use big fabric pots and can't guarantee to put them in the same places each year... and now the pipes are all already cut to do specific locations. I guess if you live somewhere that it never freezes it's better. Because of my wee cat, I'm now never away for more than a couple of days at a time, and I actually like watering ... Gives me a chance to inspect my plants, prune, harvest, weed.
Great video, I have a couple apple trees. One peach tree and the things I am looking forward to the most are four Paw Paw trees, can’t wait until they are old enough to produce!
Really need to sort something similar for my polytunnel but would probably connect to a mains supply. I love peeling the film of things like that too! I thought it was just me who got overly happy by that. It’ll make a great addition for you. Enjoy your time away, both of you.
It worked excellently in my greenhouse, Claire! I don't know if it freezes hard enough in your neck of the woods to mean you have to take it in for winter (as I recall from my Staffordshire days maybe you're lucky and wouldn't have to)
You’ve inspired me to have a look for a kit myself. Also could you tell me where you purchased the curly silver supports you have please as I remember you having them stored at the back of your greenhouse ages ago and kept wanting to ask, thank you.
Eli i am interested did i misinterpret you cut the tubing rather than use one length going around the plants and insert the dripper in the tube where you need it?
Hi eli and kate very useful video i did watch you replanting your trees into your bed and i also see you pruning last year i did a small amount of pruning afterwards and ond of the apple trees has taken off so very pleased, enjoy your time away 🍎🍏🍐
I have someone in my family on the 'short sh*t" side and they're constantly using stools. Much trickier in the garden. I noticed the bed alongside the greenhouse, is it new or just me not paying attention? Fiddly bits are the best things to try anyone's patience, well done you! 👏👏

Those are foxgloves either side of the bed the apples are in aren't they? Do you have any issues with them in terms of skin irritation or anything like that? I know they are poisonous and are said to be quite dangerous... but I also get the impression that unless you are actually eating them, they aren't that bad?
They are indeed and no, never had any issues. They are poisonous if you eat them, and I wouldn’t recommend smushing them into your hands but no in general gardening terms we’ve never had any issues 😁
@@eliandkate awesome, thank you for that. Depending on what you read it would seem you need a full hazmat suit... I did start suspecting that just being aware and cautious should be fine will be enough. Your garden of course is looking lovely as always! :D

I’ll try to get a proper “tour” done for you this week 😁

Beautiful looking garden, its the bees knees. Great job installing the solar powered drip irrigation system and staking those apple trees.

You can get systems that have moisture sensors and don't water if the ground is already wet.

Oh I wish I could claim skill but no!
It’s a little “toy” drone so it does a certain amount of autonomous shots rather than me having to fly it 🤣

Where did you buy the irrigation system
Just a bit of a Google and got it online
From irrigatia
Is that a filing cabinet to the right of the greenhouse?
Just a boring old cupboard filled with pots and things
What drip system have you used? It will work well on my raised bed
It’s the irrigata one
They have loads on their website
Hello what is the apple variety name??
The two on the outside are red falstaff and the one in the centre is Katy
If you ever need to do stakes again, rent a post driver. Much easier! :D
It was actually really easy, the ground is soft. It was just the positioning and my height that was awkward.
