Thank you for doing this timeless classic. Spoof comedy is sometimes difficult to understand. Literalism and the Jest of things are always the key. And some improv. That's Airplane in a nutshell. if you want a real classic spoof comedy. Mel Brooks was a genius at it. I very much suggest a Reaction to High Anxiety-1977. It is a brilliant and amuzing tribute to Alfred Hitchcock. I also recommend The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers. Return Of The Pink Panther-1975, The Pink Panther Strikes Again-1976, Revenge Of The Pink Panther- 1978. These are comedy masterpieces. I think You would enjoy them. Well just a few suggestions. Hope you had a fun Birthday🎂🎂🎂. Peace. 🙏

@Sappho Nymph I guess the language didn't bother me. I thought you were replying to language in this thread, which I couldn't find. Hence my confusion.
The movie even makes it very, very clear when the kid says “I know you, you’re Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, you play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers…“ IT IS TOTALLY SET UP IN THE MOVIE. Did she have a brain fart?
Yes, you could smoke on planes back then. The copilot was wearing a basketball uniform because the kid was right, it's Kareem Abdul Jabber, who played on the Lakers. There is a ten year time difference between Airplane and Pretty Woman.
This movie parodies the movie "Zero Hour" (1957)" . Many of the actors were primarily dramatic actors in films and TV from the 1950s through the 1970s. Part of the humor was having those dramatic actors play in a farce comedy. You're too young to catch a lot of the jokes. Old people like me enjoy this movie the most.
Leslie Nielsen in particular. He’s now mostly remembered as a comic actor but he used to play villains a lot (even did that in Creepshow which was made a couple of years later) or characters like the ship’s captain in The Poseidon Adventure. Airplane! changed his entire career.
Well, Airplane! was both a parody and remake of Arthur Hailey's 1957 drama film, Zero Hour since it was a predecessor to another of Arthur Hailey's work, the Airport trilogy. And of course Airplane! also parodies the Airport trilogy as well because in both Airport and Airplane! took place on a Boeing 707. And, some of the supportive cast members of Airplane! were also in the movie Zero Hour
18:47 - the joke was that actor really was a basketball player, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, just like the kid said earlier. He was one of the greatest players ever.
11:27 and don't worry all the reactors don't get this beach scene. It's from the movie From Here To Eternity (1953). Burt Lancaster and Debra Kerr. The only Airplane! difference, they were to close to the waves and seaweed.
You beat me too it! Definitely a reference most people would miss. Another example is the propeller sound of the plane even though it's clearly using jet engines. 😉
My ex-wife made me watch From Here To Eternity just for that kiss. She said it was the sexiest kissing scene in movie history, but it looked unpleasant to me.
So the airport announcers really were airport announcers and were married in real life. Must have been so much fun to do the bits at the beginning of the movie!
The “love story” is deliberately making fun of love-tropes and cliches from older movies. Because the tropes had been done to death. It’s not actually expecting the viewer to take it seriously.
@@DeltasArbiter Yeah, she’s great. But I think she hasn’t had much exposure to this type of humor. There are many older references, technologies, tropes, actors, etc. in this movie, that a younger person might not be familiar with.
The music is by legendary composer Elmer Bernstein. He's done scores for movies like The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent Seven, To Kill A Mockingbird...
As an old-fart Generation Z guy, I feel that "Airplane!" needs a glossary for the convenience of the Zoomers. Young folks always look mystified that there are weird religious cults at airports in this movie, but it was a real thing. As was smoking on airplanes! I also feel that they might not know what this was parodying in the first place, as the original (and bad, let me add) "Airport" movies have been almost completely forgotten. Anyway, happy birthday, lady!
@@trhansen3244 Airplane 2 had a more similar plot to the first Airport movie. Both had a bomb on board. The first Airplane! was a literal remake of Zero Hour! but with more comedy.
Airplane! uses many whole scenes from Zero Hour, adding jokes. It also has elements of Airport. Both were adaptations of novels by Arthur Hailey (who also wrote the screenplay for Zero Hour).
One of the things that makes it funny is that everybody plays it completely straight (except for 'Johnny' who ad-libbed all his lines). This was Leslie Nielsen's first comedic role, while he later did a lot of comedy, before this he was a serious dramatic actor.
It was also the first comedy for Lloyd Bridges (air traffic controller), Peter Graves (the pilot), and Robert Stack (Capt. Rex Kramer). Stack played Elliot Ness on "The Untouchables, Graves played Jim Phelps in "Mission: Impossible", and Bridges played a diver in "Sea Hunt".
It’s great to see people still enjoying this movie without any idea about the films they parody. Those movies ( as well as a lot of the cultural things of the time) are all forgotten but the humor transcends it and it’s still hilarious.
Especially what makes the 'jive talking' scene with the lady so funny. I saw it when it came out with a pack audience and that scene got the biggest laugh. Young folks just think she's a old lady but for us older folks she's 50's TV's suburban mom, June Cleaver.

If you're a Leslie Nielsen fan, look for a TV series called "Police Squad." It only had 6 half-hour episodes, but it was the basis for the "Naked Gun" movies.
Robert Stack (The Untouchables), Lloyd Bridges (Sea Hunt), Leslie Nielson (Bracken's World), Peter Graves (Mission: Impossible), Barbara Billingsley (Leave It to Beaver), Kenneth Tobey (The Whirlybirds) were all stars of 1950s and 60s TV series hilariously going against type in this movie.

Zucker, Abrams, Zucker wrote and directed The Naked Gun series of movies. Airplane! was Leslie Nielsen's first major comedy role. He had previously had been cast in dramatic roles.

If you're confused about the Black pilot. That really is Kareem Abdul Jabbar, one of the greatest Basketball players ever. And he's wearing his Basketball gear and glasses when they drag him out. He always was accused of upping his game for the Playoffs, hence breaking character, having a go at the young kid, Joey. That's it really.
Why is he wearing a basketball outfit? The kid says it. Hes Kareem Abdul Jabar.. he was a HUGE basketball star in the 70s. He also is famous for being in a Bruce Lee movie.
Rule of Threes! This movie follows that rule almost religiously. You found a two, when the guitar only knocked out the little girl's IV twice (Jill Whelan also played Vicki Stubing on the TV series The Love Boat at the time this movie was released). I found two fours: (1) Lloyd Bridges character does the "I picked the wrong week to quit..." joke four times, and (2) the religious people asking for donations at the airport. In both of these cases, the fourth occurrance of the joke was even more extra than the third one (Lloyd Bridges jumps out the window and Robert Stack beats up all the people from all the religions). By the way, the little statue on the airplane's dashboard is St Christopher. For Catholics, he's the patron saint of travelers, and people put those little statues on their car dashboards for protection against danger.
22:32 It's quite clear he is just playing with the dog and they added the barks, snarls and growls later. They are usually very friendly dogs. 27:23 It's a vulture, as carrion eaters they hang around places where things are dead or going to die.
It's even funnier if you know the cast, 3 of the most serious actors ever were given big roles: Peter Graves ("Mission: Impossilbe" and "Biography"), Robert Stack ("Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Untouchables") and Lloyd Bridges ("Sea Hunt") plus the whitest woman on TV Barbara Billingsley is the one who speaks the slang language 'jive' (you cut her scenes). And the funny Leslie Nielsen was a serious actor before this, he starred in the classic sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" with the beautiful Ann Francis.
This Is a spoof of a couple of airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s, they were Airport ‘77 and Airport 79 the Concorde. I saw this movie in theatres when I was 9. The woman concerned about her husband wanting a second cup of coffee was a joke about a famous coffee commercial in the 70’s where women were shocked when they would be out with their husbands and they would take a second cup of coffee when they didn’t at home and it was because of the coffee brand, I think it was either Folgers or Maxwell house coffee.
Great reaction!! Please could you do a reaction on the following movies: Rambo Franchise, Rocky Franchise, Batman - 1989, Batman Returns 1992, Judge Dredd - 1995, Dredd - 2012, V For Vendetta - 2005, Stargate - 1994, Superman - 1978 (Extended Version).
The Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home was a reference to a yuban coffee commercial. It's actually the same actress from that commercialth-cam.com/video/MJ4kCF22O2w/w-d-xo.html
Other people have pointed out that this movie was designed as a deadpan satire of disaster movies, which were popular at the time. What's also notable is that most of the primary cast, including Leslie Nielsen, were generally not comedy actors, they did serious dramas mostly; the intention was that the bizarre things they were made to do would look funnier. At one point, Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack were rehearsing one of their scenes, and Bridges said, "I don't understand where the joke is here," and Stack replied, "WE'RE the joke." As you know, after this, Nielsen changed gears and almost completely stuck to comedy roles for the rest of his life. In fact, his final appearance was a cameo in SPANISH MOVIE, though obviously he was dubbed by another actor since he spoke no Spanish. It was never released in America, even though most of the movies being parodied (THE ORPHANAGE, THE OTHERS, THE SEA INSIDE) were pretty well known here; I bought a Spanish DVD of it and watched it on a region free player. I don't know if that's streaming where you are, but I would be curious to see you react to it.
Really love this movie! Been watching Airplane! since I was 6 years old and it's what got me into love airplanes so much! Glad you reacted to this movie. Fun fact: the airplane that they used at Los Angeles International Airport was a TWA (Trans World Airlines) Boeing 707-100 and the cockpit in the movie was a modified replica of the Convair CV-880 cockpit
The movie parodies a lot of things, but is an overall parody of the 1950s film "Zero Hour!" Some of it is a shot for shot copy...just a little twisted. Several of the jokes were too topical to age well. The "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home" line (and it's follow up) for instance is from a then-current coffee. commercial. This is actually the film that started Leslie Nielsen's comedy career - before this he only did "serious" roles.
When you are correcting yourself from saying the *4th Window* to saying breaking the *4th Wall* you missed the magazine rack said *(Whacking Material)*
So, obviously a lot has changed with air travel since this movie was made- There did used to be a smoking section on airplanes; In the late 70s, LAX became notorious for members of religious cults coming up and bothering people in the terminal. (I believe it was the Hari Krishnas who used to offer people flowers) Also, this movie is directly spoofing the Airport franchise- Almost every passenger on the plane is taken straight from an Airport movie. The flashback scenes are spoofing Saturday Night Fever and An Affair To Remember
There is a sequel to this movie Airplane 2 the sequel. An well watching the long haul version of this movie. Thats on the don't call me Shirley edition of this movie. Wich is fine if you like seeing cast an crew interviews an behind the scenes secrets. But be aware the long haul version is like 3 to 4 hours long. But in a interview the actor that played the pilot that ask. All those wird questions to the kid said. When they went to film that scene he keep one eye on the exits. Just incase he had to make a run for it because. Even he was like you want me to say this stuff to a kid. So he was reedy to run just in case.
You do need help, 27:55 you remember the first Godfather, horse in the bed or rather The horse's head. Oh to answer your question, why did they break the fourth wall, because it was Airplane! You want more wall breaking, Blazing Saddles has the best, and I quote MellVerse reactor, "The breaking of the fourth wall was monumental".
Hey South side girl, I'm breaking the 4th window...ugh.. I mean 4th wall and talking to you haha. That was a fun reaction. The auto-pilot scenes were so funny!!! Thanks for making me smile. Happy birthday 🎂. I just had my birthday last week too so happy birthday to us both lol. Keep smiling🤘🙂
Since you like this movie and "The Naked Gun" movies you might also like the film "Transylvania Twist" {TT}, it is similar to those as well as "Young Frankenstein, and Monty Python {MP}, TT even has a double fake-out intro similar to "{MP's} The Meaning of Life".
You absolutely MUST react to the movie GHOST (1990). The same people who made AIRPLANE! made it but you’d never know it because it’s some different. You’ll love it!
I just lost it at the handshake sequence, I mean, I’ve seen it lots of times, but for some reason, it really got to me during this video. I guess the awkwardness and how it ended was the key
I get the impression that you already were familiar with Leslie Nielsen as a comic actor. If so, you should know that before this movie he had always done serious dramatic parts, as was true of most of the actors in this movie. This movie launched his comedic acting career.

I love this movie so much. Been watching it since I was little, many centuries ago...
I hope you watch the credits to the very end. There was another scene after the credits were over.
If you want to laugh at more crazy film spoofs, try "Hot Shots" and "Hot Shots: Part Deux" from the same writers/directors.
Why is he wearing a basketball outfit? The kid says it. Hes Kareem Abdul Jabar.. he was a HUGE basketball star in the 70s. He also is famous for being in a Bruce Lee movie.
Seriously, it’s completely set up in the movie itself, even if you don’t know who he is offhand.
At the end of the credits, they show the guy still waiting in the taxi.
Really? 😂😂😂OMG
BTW: You missed the end where you see the guy in the taxi still sat there waiting.
7:05 "I notice everything" - except the sound of propellers on a jet engine plane.. 🙄
This movie is my type of humor exactly!!!!
humor of a drunk daddy ))
Surely you can't be serious.
Airplane 2 is good as well
Finally someone who doesn't turn the sound down to mouse level? Shirly you jest!
Not green screen. It was done by using rear projection back then...
Man! 80s comedy movies were something else. LOL! I now know where Family Guy got their inspiration for some of their episodes.
Hello, I love your reaction to this film. Have you seen Monty Python's Life of Brian. One of my favourite films. It's sooooo funny.
"He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy"
I was about to say that, hope it gets a chance on some polls. Good acting, decent budget and it has some clever humour.
The horse in the bed is a play on words. A stallion used for breeding is called a stud which became a word used to describe a good looking man ...
One of the subtle jokes: it’s a jet aircraft, but it sounds like a propeller plane.
:-)
The old lady seat mate does a perfect expression of being irritated at his talking while trying to recover to look polite.
Loved the reaction! And for the record, you could hypnotize folks with that "love eyes" look hahaha
Still a funny film... though some of the jokes probably couldn’t be remade today..which is sad as it’s just humour, but hey ho.. Cool react 🤟🏼😎
At one point, Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack were rehearsing one of their scenes, and Bridges said, "I don't understand where the joke is here," and Stack replied, "WE'RE the joke."
As you know, after this, Nielsen changed gears and almost completely stuck to comedy roles for the rest of his life.
This movie still holds up all these years later. I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊
Biggest running gag is the airliner sounds like an old prop plane but it's a jet
3:50 Did he just break the 4th window lol thank you, haven't laughed like that in awhile 😄
I'm only 10 minutes in, at the Disco scene, and I'm laughing my ass off with you. I forgot how funny this movie was. Thanks for reminding me.
Your stuffed dog in the background kind of looks like the copilot. I'm 29 minutes into your reaction I just realized .lol
Okay I'm done. This is fun to watch as always. Thank you.
Loved the overall reaction and double thumb up just for showing all of the "Wrong week to quit" part. And the 4:51, my thoughts excatly.
(I believe it was the Hari Krishnas who used to offer people flowers)
Also, this movie is directly spoofing the Airport franchise- Almost every passenger on the plane is taken straight from an Airport movie.
Leslie Nielsen is a quality actor. A treasure.
Dude, keep doing videos!!!!!!!
VAMOS CARAJO, ERES EXCELENTE
A lot of jokes wen't over your head, pun intended.
The co-pilot, Kareem Abdul Jabar, really was a basketball player. One of the greatest of all time.
"What the FOOHK?!" ALWAYS makes my day!😂 ✌ ❤
You're soooooo adorable! God, that accent is to die for! Bella!!! Completamente bella. 😘
Otto as "auto pilot", there's an "Airplane 2". Head over to IMDB and read the trivia where there are easily 50+ trivia things.
As the guy below says, check out Top Secret. Or Kung Pow - Enter The Fist. Both are so funny 🤣
You are adorable and I love watching your reactions, and happy birthday!
You mean “breaking the front window” 😂😂😂😂
9:37 "Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"
If you want something silly and fun - and perfect for Halloween - you need to watch 'What We Do in the Shadows'.
I guess the awkwardness and how it ended was the key
the "Jim never _____ at home" gag is a reference to an old coffee commercial- I think it was Maxwell House?
It was Yuban coffee--and it was the same actress in both the ad and the movie.
@@Chanteuse66 there you have it.
@@Chanteuse66 OMG! I’ve watched this movie countless times since the 80s and I never knew that! Amazing. Thank you
I get the impression that you already were familiar with Leslie Nielsen as a comic actor. If so, you should know that before this movie he had always done serious dramatic parts, as was true of most of the actors in this movie. This movie launched his comedic acting career.
I think you're the first person on the internet who's bothered to bring up commedia dell'arte. That felt nice.
