I love the line about them still being boys imagining their lives if they escaped. I thought it was clear throughout the story that Jimmy and Sean have survivors guilt so he it is almost an admission that he feels he is trapped in their and his life has just been a continuation of the point where someone else took something horrible for him

Well maybe because they were at the parade and neither of them seemed to have a care in the world, I am just saying what was Sean waiting for? He let him go is what happened.
Eric Day you have to remember , it’s based on a novel. And in the novel, jimmy is a genius. He’s incredibly smart, and will leave no shreds of evidence . Kevin bacons character , who is our narrator in it, even says so himself
Trill Cosby Keyword "thought" the fact he was so lustful for revenge baffles me. Jimmy shouldn't get sympathy. Dave killed a child molester and Jimmy didn't believe him.
He knew he killed Dave, that's why he went straight to Jimmy to tell him about the killers hoping he'd hadn't killed Dave already. He knew the moment he got the call from Celeste Boyle that Dave was dead or soon to be dead. That's why Sean tells Jimmy we got the killers first then asked about Dave, to let Jimmy know it wasn't Dave & then hoping he hadn't already killed Dave when he asked when's the last time you saw Dave? Brilliant film, phenomenal acting & Clint Eastwood is immensely talented behind the camera. One of his best films, hands down.
“The reality is we’re still 11 year old boys locked in a cellar, imagining what our lives would have been if we’d escaped.” Only Dave was in reality like this, stuck as an 11 years old
Both Jimmy and Dave are grey zone damaged characters and Sean is the only character not damaged and he is the hero type which is shocking because Kevin Bacon is known for playing bad guys.
The first time I saw this movie I really did think Dave killed Katie because of his haunting traumatic childhood but it was Kate's boyfriend's kid brother and his best friend.
Does Jimmy get convicted? Totally INMATERIAL. All that matters is that "the last time" Jimmy saw Dave "was 25 years ago, coming up that street, looking back of that car” …and that, such a METAPHOR, as seemingly cruel and beautiful as it might seem…or be…presents, in an utterly elegant scheme, not only the bottom-line, but also, the grand-philosophical thought of the story.
Well stated. Only people who don't live in a bubble and are aware of the beautiful/tragic nature of reality understands this film. This film or book is not even a movie in the traditional sense so people can escape. It's an allusion to the harsh reality that is the world run by humans and the complexity of the human condition.

Sean knows what, Jimmy did. He's going to have to arrest him. He can't let him go just because they're friends. If, they're even still friends. I wonder, what happened after the parade?!

I agree. That ending with Jimmys wife giving some type of evil speech was so weird.

Kristine Smart then you don't know anything about films.
Great Movie. 3 friends who went in separate directions in life. Brilliant.
Kevin Bacon is underrated in this movie. Sean Penn and other guy are brilliant, but so was Kevin.
The other guy dear, is andy dufrescene . Just dont insult that icon.
The other guy was Oscar winning actor tim Robbins not Andy dufrescene
@@wrestlinginfodude2644 He just had to change his name to Tim Robbins because he's in hiding rn.

Apparently it won't based on how the film ends.

No it will. Sean will come after him and Jimmy knows it.
I don't think he cares when his wife approved and is giving him sloppy top every night
Nah, he just forgets it and becomes gangster leader with no remorse.
He's going down to Sean in Pacino style
That might be the case if Jimmy weren't portrayed as a completely irredeemable shitbag.
Boy did Jimmy make a terrible mistake by killing Dave.
& Sean’s monologue was deep as hell
Kevin Bacon: "hey...uh, Sean? Very dramatic, but you realize you're super under arrest now, right?"
I loved Bacon and that character up until this scene, just as you said, Uh Jimmy there is the little thing of you killing an innocent man.
What makes you think Bacons character was going to let him get away with it.
Well maybe because they were at the parade and neither of them seemed to have a care in the world, I am just saying what was Sean waiting for? He let him go is what happened.

Idk about his best friend but maybe a someone he knew when he was a kid, big difference
He really wanted to spare him
he was certain dave killed his daugter
He admitted it right there! ‘ If you only moved faster ‘
In the book he decides not to because he has no evidence. He knows what Jimmy did, but can't prove it.
yeah

He didnt arrest him because he had now probably cause. Like denzel once said. Its not what you know but what you can prove.
That's a great line for life!😀I wish I would've thought of it!
Tom Cruise said that!
Nope that was Gerard butler in law abiding citizen

Great and very tragic movie.
It's sad how childhood friends become strangers later in life

Only Dave was in reality like this, stuck as an 11 years old
He had no remorse for mistakenly killing Dave that really bothered me
I would like to think that It's the effect of being drunk af.
Part of that is because Dave died that day he got taken, same as Sean and jimmy
yes, I hate him so much

One of my favorite movies ever. For anyone who hasnt read the book, i highly recommend it. It puts a different spin on this scene

The wives are horrible
All wives in this movie suck
Now the question remains will Sean go after Jimmy.
@Travis B it was. he just needs evidence.
He probably will, if case opens for Dave
In the book, Sean openly accuses Jimmy of murdering Dave and the book ends with the clear indication that Sean will pursue Jimmy over it.
I hope so
