I met Carol Kaye back in the early 80's in Monterey California. What a super nice and intelligent human being. We hung out for a few days before she moved on to New York. I'll never forget her generosity with her bass knowledge. We hung out in the local music store for three days. And she didn't ask for a dime in the process. God Bless her for every thing she shared with me about bass, when I was just a mere young pup.

Up until today I had never heard of Carol Kaye, but I've spent my entire life enjoying her work. A real pleasure to discover this great musician. I had no idea a woman played all those great basslines. It's confusing why she isn't more famous. What an amazing career.

And admit it... the testosterone instinctively made you want to undermine and bash her work and made you feel a sort of shame for actually admiring a female guitarist. No doubt you must have felt had.
I run into many guys like you who are shocked and embarrassed to find a guitar player they thought was epic was a girl the whole time.
Too late now. Can't call her work 'muddled garbage' or 'sloppy' or 'soulless' now. X'D

My husband is the legendary Nashville bassist, Bob Moore. He was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame a few years back as were the Los Angeles Wrecking Crew. All of the Wrecking Crew attended the grand affair except for Carol Kaye. It was a sad disappointment that she wasn't there. We would love to have met her. She's simply marvelous.

One of America's national musical treasures. An icon that should be talked about in music education not only for her immense impact on early rock n roll, and movie scores, but jazz, as well her being a long time educator. Although I am not a bassist persay, I have started using her techniques in my home studio with immense success. She pioneered the essential bass sound that made rock n roll bass jump out of a 3" speaker.

My partner is so passionate about the bass guitar ( though he’s just a beginner) and talks so much about Cathy Kaye. She’s such an inspiration to him! I’m a bit clueless with this stuff, but I would love to arrange for him to have a brief tutorial with her - many thanks!

EXACTLY! I myself came to realize years ago, that if you REALLY want to be a great improviser, know your harmony! Get to know those chords inside and out and how they relate to each other. I almost NEVER use the scale approach for improvising anymore. I tend to use chord tones all the way. It's a much simpler and more effective approach in my humble opinion. She's giving great advice here. Do yourself a favor and LISTEN aspiring musicians. Listen close. :)

Carol Kaye is amazing. Legendary at that. This is one of the best bass lessons you can hear. The second after I watched this video I went on my bass and studied all this, but by her saying this does not mean you should not know your scales. Notice how even after she talks about the chordal tones she shows that she does know her scales. You have to know both. They are both key aspects to music, so i do not think you could just easily get by knowing one or the other.

I bought a bass (Dan Armstrong acrylic) in 1975 at age 14, from my sisters boyfriend. Went downtown to the music store and bought a Mel Bay, and Carol Kaye, "How to play the bass guitar" books. Went home, into my bedroom, and went over those books until I had memorized the fret board, and played along with some theory explained. Wish I still had them. My 12y/o son has taken interest in the bass (thinks I am going to give him my Warwick Corvette Pro 😭) and I will get these books for him as well. I know there are better books, CD's, and DVD's out there now. But, he likes some old school things, so we'll see. Carol Kaye is a funk/groove, master!

  • @vzotalis

Bass shed: scale notes are the notes of the scale from 1 to 8. The right ones are a matter of choice, intention and of course, harmony. The chord notes are the notes of each chord. But keep in mind that if you go skipping notes 1-3-5-7-9-11-13, a chord contains all the scale notes. It is supposed that harmony and melody equals each other in proportion. But the reality of playing tells us that theres no proportion, but relationship (to use math terms).

Carol Kaye is such a legend. Jeez the amount of hits and incredible musicians she's played on and with is staggering. She's a joy to listen to and watch. I saw someone mention the rock n roll Hall of fame and frankly the hall of fame is a joke. I mean it's great for the people inducted but it's ridiculous with the amount of people truly deserving to be in it while so many bands get in that have no business being in it...or at least not yet. Not before legends like Carol Kaye and The Meters to name one band that should be in it without a doubt.

It is unfortunate the author had to endure such a barrage of bother from Ms. Kaye, but ultimately his research has proven a point that - surprisingly - needed to be made. John Buffaloe amazingly progressive for women because she was hidden and never seen or knowingly heard?
Think about saying stuff like that.

Carol is like the guitar Goddess. When she plays it’s like hot fudge on cold ice cream, smooooth. Love you Carol. 💕
