    I´m still amazed how little winter weather does to my kona. in -20c I can easily get 300km of range out of it on a highway and I never charge my battery to full 100%.

    Not surprised. The Kona is very efficient at slower speeds, but at higher speed the air resistance is taking its toll.

  • @NeilBlanchard
    @NeilBlanchard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Colder air means (somewhat) denser air - so more drag; which is most important the faster you are driving. Aerodynamic drag goes up by the square of the speed, and so the faster you go, the greater the difference is for a given difference in air temperature.
    A typical car - with a frontal area of about 25 square feet / 2.32 square meters - like these two cars, for each mile / 1.6km that you drive - the car must push 4.5 TONS / 4.1 metric tons of air out of the way.
    Each and every mile / 1.6km ... that is a lot of weight! So, when the temperature drops, that mass becomes greater.

    Kona basically has higher charging losses compared to the ID.3. Comparison of consumption only makes sense based on the amount of electricity charged. Kona has approx. 15% higher cx x A, which is the consumption compared to. ID.3 increased.

    Did the ID.3 get any update during the last 6 months that made it more efficiant? If I remember correctly in the first ID.3 videos I watched several months ago, the consumption was higher somehow?

      @@BatteryLife Temperature was my second thought 😉
      I didn‘t think it would make such a difference? Correct me if I am wrong, but was consumption in winter at 130 km/h not about 25 ish? Does consumption really double or is it more the lower temperature in the battery?

      Wait. This test here us not representable. Since I am only going one way. It could be downhill. Only starting and ending at the same elevation is a good consumption test.

    I do not understand why people think speed limiter will stop you going above a certain speed. They do not reason you may need to make an emergency maneuver which requires you to go above the speed. So there is some leeway in this.
    Normally you set the speedlimited before you move off
    But if you accelerated hard it deactivates.
    Why are you driving in eco mode ? What not normal mode like normal drivers make it real world as very few use eco mode.

      Weight the the kona is a lighter vehicle by 100kg
      This is something vw need to address

      The Kona is smaller inside due to it being a repackaged fossil car and not a bespoke EV platform but overall the dimensions are similar.
      I was mildly surprised to see the ID.3 come out close to the Kona in efficiency.
      We bought a 2 year old ID.3 because of the extra cabin space and especially extra legroom for rear seat passengers. This is an important factor for us.

    Nice conparison. It's a pity you no longer have the e Niro to do a 3-Way Comparison. The Niro is bigger and probably less aerodynamic, so it would have been interesting to see how much impact that has.

    Being as efficient as a BEV, that is based on a 5 years old ICE-platform?

    Must be downhill or a lot of wind in the back... 130-134 Wh/km is extremely low consumption..... Like slower country road driving without wind.
    Even if it a comparison test - if the low consumption is due to wind from the back it means that if one of the cars has higher drag it won't really be shown in the test as wind is more or less taken out of the equation.......

    • @BatteryLife

      Id.3 has 189 Wh/km at constant 130 km/h gps in the summer with starting and ending at the same spot.

      @renebergqvist599 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BatteryLife Yes that seems right. We have done 42000 km in it now and 110 km/h is 160-170 Wh/km while 130 km/h is just under 200 Wh/km.
      We have gotten down under 120 kWh/km also but that is relaxed cruising at moderate speeds at country roads - summer - no wind.
      I look forward to the Kona video.
      And thanks for all your work and focus on the car as a daily tool. Also good you bring in your wifes angle - most cars are after all for the use of the whole family.
