Another Driver Passes with a Horn When Will La Mesa Fix This?

  • When will the @CityofLaMesa put some kind of real infrastructure in these 3 blocks so people on bikes aren't constantly at the mercy of drivers' fragility? We're on Lake Murray Blvd from Marengo to El Paso. It's an unavoidable portion of my daily commute, and I know from one of the city's engineers in a public meeting that there's room here for some kind of option. There just doesn't seem to be the will to do anything, and it's maddening.
    Thanks for watching.
    These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
    The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
    Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalition.org/) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulatesd.org/)

    the thing about riding in the sidewalk is that it isn’t as safe as you think since cars can just enter and pull out of driveways mindlessly and still run you over

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego

      Yes! In addition to the people walking on it, we also have less visibility for people pulling in and out of driveways. There's room for pedestrians, and drivers, and there's room for people on bikes, only someone other than a little sign and some paint needs to let drivers know that.

      I'm glad you've been comfortable on sidewalks (even though I don't believe you), and have been able to avoid people with strollers, walking dogs, or just walking, as well as cars pulling in and out of curb cuts. On this road, I'm not slowing anyone else down, as there's a whole other lane to be used. And even if I am slowing drivers down: good. What's your hurry? Is that chair not comfy enough?

      I have a hard time regarding any honk as friendly. When there's room to pass, there's just no need for it. Maybe if cars had bike bells, they wouldn't sound so aggressive. In fact, there's a court case about this moving up to the Supreme Court, I think. The law states, “no person shall sound such bell, gong, horn, whistle or other device for any purpose except as a warning of danger.” More detail are here: www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/california-law-car-horn-speech-18112920.php
      In short, since there's no danger here, no warning is necessary. The driver is choosing to make it dangerous by honking to express their frustration in having to move.

      Narrow sidewalks are designed for pedestrians, and they're not safe to bike on. But I think you're proposing an excellent design option. If this stretch of Lake Murray Blvd had a widened sidewalk with an incorporated bike path, there's still room for street parking, and a single lane in each direction, which would give everyone safe spaces.

    Well done mate. Around my area, Cranbourne Outer South Eastern Melbourne, Australia there is NO BIKE LANE ANYWHERE WHICH IS SAFE! Due to the distance between most conveniences EVERYBODY DRIVES. I've seen new urban developments popping up here with no footpaths connecting those new suburbs to the local shopping precinct. Familes need to drive to access basic nessesities. Even the public bus service around here is pathetic. Some buses only run one way in the afternoon, ONCE A DAY! Most people drive 'WANK UTES'....or utes which are never used for any type of trade. Many of them are driven by soccer mums who cannot even see over the dashboard. And tgese people speed everywhere! There's length of tarmac outside my property approx 400m long on which people regularly accelerate from a standing start to 20kms over the speed limit before requiring to slow down at the upcoming roundabout. It's the wild west(east) out here. Ride a bike? No way! Walk on ungraded un safe and boggy nature strips? Nup. I've watched motorists drive towards pedestrians around here to try and scare them. It's f√cking nightmare.

      The longer I ride around, the less I blame some individual drivers, and the more I see it as systemic problems. People don't drive because they love driving. They drive because they feel it's the only safe option they have. If we placed more conveniences near where people live, and gave them safe sidewalks and bike paths and reliable transit, they'd drive less.

Doesn’t seem like the person did anything different than if you were a car driving in that lane. Idk if you drive a car or have driven a car but this is going to happen to anyone that is going that slow regardless of vehicle. If you drive or ride at such a low speed people are going to be pissed at you. I imagine a car that is doing what you are doing will actually draw even more ire and probably a lot of expletives instead of just a horn. You also have to keep in mind that traveling so far under the speed limit like you are doing is also a great danger to everyone on the road just as traveling an absurd amount over the speed limit. W

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yes, if I were in a car going 15mph, a driver behind me would honk, but surely you and everyone else understand that that reaction would be because a car can go much faster. I'm on a bike going as fast as I can SPECIFICALLY in the space where I'm supposed to ride. Equating going 15mph on a bike and going that same speed in a car sounds like what we call "false equivocation." If you're trying to have this conversation in good faith, you can see the differences, right?
      But if you're going to defend drivers having tantrums with their horn instead of just changing lanes and calmly passing, you're at the wrong channel. But thanks for watching.

    • @OnYourLeft
      @OnYourLeft 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Imagine a loader or a backhoe driving up that hill at 15mph in that lane. Nearly every driver would just switch lanes and pass, no issue.
      Now imagine a horse-drawn carriage with two horses, climbing up that hill, doing about 15mph with people inside. Nearly every driver would just switch lanes and pass, no issue.
      Now imagine a car with an ignition problem trying to get up that hill, doing 15mph with hazard lights on. Nearly every driver would just switch lanes and pass, no issue.
      For some reason, a cyclist doing 15mph uphill in the right lane with well marked sharrows just pisses many motorists off, a lot more than any of the situations above. And people immediately blame the cyclist and say he shouldn't be there, or that he should go faster, or that he should just accept the abuse.
      It's a road. It can be used in many different ways. Not only that, it's a surface street, so there are bound to be drivers entering and exiting, slowing down traffic all the time. A licensed driver made a pact with the state government that they would be careful and not be abusive to others on the road. The dude was out of line.

I don’t know if you are not from around here or what but people traveling that slow regardless of reason, outside of maybe an oversized truck are considered assholes here. It’s been that way all my life.
      What you are doing by being so slow in a traffic lane is basically riding around giving people the finger. Personally, I just go around bikes when it is safe and don’t honk. I would just laugh it off even if someone was literally going 10 mph giving me the finger. You have to consider that a lot of people aren’t like that though and they see what you are doing in those terms. Whenever I rode I would always stay to the right of the lane as safely as possible. I rarely ever had anyone give me flack because I was being courteous to the cars around me.
