I never played this but it looks absolutely insane. And like you said, it looks surprisingly good for an 8 year old game. I guess it shows what good art design and color palettes can do. Doesn't really look dated whatsoever
One of my friends introduced me to this game a couple days ago, and I can say it's pure joy!! Nothing I like more than some good combat. The humour is on point, and the story is great. I rarely hear about games like these anymore!

I played this when it released on Steam and loved it, felt like a mixture of Jet Set Radio and Saints Row the Third, two games I also really like. It's sad that we probably won't get a sequel. That said I don't know if they ever updated the PC port but I can remember that the rollercoaster boss fight massively tanked the framerate in a way that no other part ever did, even just grinding through the same are outside of that mission worked fine.
This game and halo were the only reason I even remotely considered buying a Xbox. I don't regret my ps4 but I'd be lying if I said I don't yearn for this game

There are lots of enemies being one shot, there’s an auto target system, and all of the characters are jumping building to building or flying, go watch the “Flash and Burn” trailer. You’ll see, shark running up the side of a building and at 1:53 in the trailer, its very clear this Suicide Squad game is heavily inspired by Sunset. I’m super excited for that game because of the obvious similarities to Sunset Overdrive.
I love nearly everything about this game, it’s like a cross between Jet Set Radio, Bully, and the wilder parts of Saints Row. It was tedious and grating to people who didn’t care for it, though. Ultimately, I think it was doomed to be a cult classic.

I can't believe sunset is already 8 years old. I remember being 14 and playing this game in my pj's after getting it for Christmas. I've probably played it four times through at this point. This and ace combat 7 are my comfort games

Such a leap from n64 . Dave mirras bmx. Simpsons road rage. Cell damage I had so much fun with those 3 games. Didnt get halo till later. Kinda glad cause i prob wouldnt have touched the other games for awhile if i had halo at launch.

Honestly, I totally forgot about Fast Travel was an option. The traversal is just so much fun that "wow, I want to get to the objective immediately, let's fast travel" never crossed my mind throughout the game time.

@@Branchoni The Xbox One version, and unlocking Sleepless Outfit (including the denim vest) from tutorial videos for the male player character makes this game extremely cool with Sleepless Outfit on and beating Fizzie boss fight (grinding the yellow rails, bounce on glowing pads, and grinding the yellow rails again then shoot one of Fizzie's eyes while standing by before he reboots himself).
Modern games have to do so much to cater to such a vast demographic that either wants to do wacky tasks to have fun or grind the shit out of levels or in game currency to enable all sorts of people to get their version of gratification or satisfaction. Gamers are such a hard customer base to cater for, although devs are to blame for over promising and underdelivering
@@mickeybobbins I think that a lot of it is from execs wanting to make a game that sells to everyone and huge dev teams (from 800 to more than 1000 people) that both lack communication and end up having different goals and vision for a single game. We need more games that have a greater focus on what they want to achieve instead of games that want to achieve everything

@@ericvazquez2225 Must go to Chaos Squad in the Xbox One version with other players (pretty hard for some), get higher points to get rewards, get The Sleepless Outfit (including the light blue denim vest from tutorial videos and E3 2014 trailer) for male player character, and beat story mode including the iconic Fizzie boss fight; after story mode, have fun blasting OD with The Sleepless Outfit on and get even better weapons and amps.
Hell if I remember correctly, the trailer to Sunset Overdrive broke the 4th wall a few times and had humour in it and that's what brought me to the game. Played it during launch and it's such a gem

5:56 I can’t agree more. I hate using anything except the “canon” outfit, I have to usually force myself to try on different outfits. Sunset overdrive made me wanna customize my character! You can go full dress up and it’s amazing. God I love this game.

9:15 another example of that 1% is when you are trying to do precise wall running, more specifically when trying to get neon sings, there were so many times where I tried to go back and forth on a wall like an idiot to get a sign, and it's especially annoying when they are near a corner. I wish there was an option to easily turn around on a wall or go down and up them while running. That being said this is probably the most fun I've had traversing in an open world game. And having to engage in it to not die stops the game form being too easy (unless you use the health trail amp, which is insanely broken). Nothing beats shredding through hords of OD at max style with all amps going haywire while having "Sunset City" by The Bronx blast in the backround.
That's really stretching it. It's a coincidence that they both are open world with cool traversal and have that voice actress. Other than that they have little in common.
Microsoft not trying to pick this company up and give them free reign was the dumbest decision ever. But this was at the height of the military shooter craze and this game wasn't appreciated until after that died. It definitely is now though. It's probably got the most reviews of any game on the digital store.
Sunset is probably one of my favorite video games for casual play, just grinding around rails and shooting at zombies is so much fun, it also had some insane boss fights and some awesome customizations. Plus the jokes were all on point. 100% would recommend if you want a fun game
Reminded me when playing a bit of skate 3, saints row, dead rising and ac. This game just works so well didn’t take it self too serious but played into it also it forces you to not stick with the same weapons. Hope another game like this comes out in the future. But I don’t think anything can really top this in the way that it works.

What was crazy to me at the time this came out was I loved the Resistance series that Insomniac made (Fall of Man is the best imo), and then this comes seemingly out of nowhere as a totally different world, setting, genre, everything. They really put a lot of love into Sunset Overdrive being a completely new IP and essentially a playground to do something completely different than what they've made in the past and they nailed it.

This game is an absolute gem, this video was also a great time, my only gripe with like, every Sunset Overdrive review, is that they all completely ignore the "DLC", which is when you go to the oil rig and the FizzCo Robo City, as most reviewers will just mention it never got a sequal, and even using a quote from the character when they SEE the Fizz Co city and say "Maybe we'll know in a sequal" other then that, great video
This game is so unbelievably underrated! One of the most fun singleplayer games I've played. The movement was so satisfying and I enjoyed how funny and insane the story was! Glad to see you cover this game, one of my favorites from last generation
This was one of the very last games that I played and enjoyed immensely before the open world games fatigue took over me. It's one of the most dumb fun I've ever had with a game in a long time

But I somehow forgot about it entirely and when I first heard about Fortnite (still having no idea what it was about to become) I looked at the artstyle briefly and I thought to myself "Have't you seen this already years ago?!" xD Maybe I should dedicate some hours to it. my experience with this game can be summed up in one specific moment, when I was 10 min from leaving with my parent, but I wanted to finish a quest, the marker showing across the river, so I opened the map to see if I could make it, hovering over the marker, I only then realized it gave me the choice to Fast travel. I didn't even know it was a thing, because the traversal had been sooo good at sucking me in, I had never found a reason to use it and to this day, I haven't experienced the same thing in any game I have played.

This is my most wanted sequel other than Half-Life 3. Sunset Overdrive is almost perfect and I adore it with every fiber of my being. It took until unlocking the air dash for it to click for me, but it clicked HARD.
I wish it were more known that this game actually took inspiration from the Jet Set games, but sadly like 5% of Sunsets player base know what Jet Set Radio Future is. :(

Because of me being a playstation player, I had missed out on this game until a year ago when I decided to play on the game pass for PC, it was genuinely the most fun game I had played in a while. It was funny, weapons felt good, parkour was really fun, and the customization was awesome

I'm hoping we'll get a sequel or remaster at some point. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on the DualSense would be perfect this Sunset Overdrive.
It doesn't really need a remaster, I think. Just turning on the FPS boost for it on X|S and releasing a Playstation port with 60fps as well would be more than adequate, I think
@@RusticRonnie That's not exactly correct. Microsoft has the publishing rights to the first one, but the ownership was never in their hands. Insomniac owned it from start to finish, and so that publishing deal will come to an end, and it will probably be a decade after its initial launch.
Just played this game for the first time this year. Loved it! Unique gameplay and fun vibe. Enjoyed customizing my character to be totally out of this world and yet my character still seemed to fit in the world.
I overlooked Sunset Overdrive on release because it seemed a bit too much like a rip-off of Saint's Row 3+4. Got into it lately, played about 2h having crazy fun when I realized "holy sh*t, this is Tony Hawk with guns!" And just like that, I couldn't stop playing. The game flow is just so good and entertaining. It's a rare example where traversal is just as fun as the fights and they're mixed perfectly.
This is easily one of my favorite open world games, one of the few I geniunely do enjoy and one of the best third person shooters ever made. No one ever points out due it to being an Xbox console exclusive but this game was the game that brought fast paced movement back into shooters 2 years before Doom 2016 did all though this came out the same year as Titanfall but that had no single player campaign. Sunset Overdrive was even mocking cover based shooters in it's marketing too. It's crazy how this game came out on the same console brand as Halo and Gears of War LMAO. It's insanity to me. I remember playing Gears of War 4 and this game in 2018 and while I don't dislike GOW4, it didn't feel half as fun as Sunset Overdrive. While I do really like this game one big issue I have with it that can even extend to Ratchet and Clank as well is that there is too many weapons to point of being quanity over quality a lot of the weapons in general start to overlap in general. Resistance 1 and 3 handles this a lot better where you are given a good amount of weapons you will use a lot but not so many guns that you won't ever bother using.
Sunset Overdrive is one of my personal favourites, and absolutely amazing, I highly recommend playing it. However, I will say that it has a couple problems that can mar the experience, especially for replayability. Like you mentioned, a lot of the sidequest chains are long enough that it becomes very tedious, and sometimes the battles can feel too easy. This is annoying the first time around, but you just never feel like doing them on later playthroughs. Speaking of which, the opening sequence is nice, but god the early-game tutorials are unskippable and terrible. They either slow you down or bring you to an absolute stop and wrench control away from the player while the narrator shouts at you about how things work, really slowly. It's at complete odds with the game's feeling of flow that's usually present. Some of the minor quest cutscenes can drag on too long and have much less effort than the ones for the main questline (which are great), and they're unskippable. There's also the issue of locking basic movement options behind story progression, which is ok for new players but feels jarring on repeat playthroughs. The super-bounce, air dash, and melee-slam bounce complete the traversal set in such an important way that not having them for a chunk of the game disrupts the core selling-point of the game. These are all problems that only require minor tweaks to fix, and they would make enough of an improvement that it frustrates me that the game wasn't supported long enough for them to be fixed. Honestly I'd say without them it would have been a perfect game. Still, it's one of the greats of the generation IMO, and I'll drop everything to buy a sequel if it's ever announced.
Im so glad someone is bringing up this game, I absolutely adored it. Finishing it even brought a tear to my eye, as it was the first time I actually felt something other than exhaustion and mindless boredom.
Reading comments from the Saints row reboot, someone mentioned this game. So i got curious and now I am playing it. I am having so much fun trying to learn how to navigate the world, while killing enemies all around the map. I can definitely see Insomniac's Spiderman got its inspiration in this game.
This game is the definition of freedom and fun like there's so many creative ways to fight enemies and it never gets boring, it's like you combine skate boarding, roller skating and parkour together and guns and make a city into one giant skate park and BAM you got yourself a playground.
Just installed this on the XSX, I'm not normally a fan of this art style, but oh my, what a fun addictive game! Can't believe it's taken me this long to discover it
I miss it so much, I revisit it now and then and honestly I wish they gave it a sequel. The game was nigh perfect but I'd love to see it more refined, plus bringing back the multiplayer would be amazing. Also the fact that Overcharge Drinks are an option to replace the currency in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is so good I'm glad they chose to reference it.
Hello! This is an opinion from someone who didn't like the game, from me. I have rather poor English skills so please excuse my mistakes, I'm thraying :) So I've wanted to play Sunset Overdrive for quite some time (i'm a big fan of Ratchet & clank trylogy, especially the 3 and Gladiator [or Deadlocked]), I've watched a review or two when it come out, but I didn't own the Xbox (and still i don't have it) but thanks to GamePass I finally played it! And I was bored And dissapointed. I didn't finished it. I played for like 5 hours And never picked it up again. I'm a Pole, and to my not perfect English i played in my native language, Polish. But dub was one of the worst i have ever heard, it was painfull. I could switch to English, but I wouldn't understand much (Don't ever play this game in Polish, I beg you). My lack of enterntainment was (I think) moustly because of dub. But I didn't like the gameplay eather. I didn't have fun shooting or grinding (or riding is a better word?) Or customise my character. I tried to have fun, and Just injoy the game, but I couldn't. I didn't like the charakters (I don't even remember they're names) I even despice and hate that nerd guy (you know, than one whe rescued and escort to his "friends" who were Talking only by writing) he was irritating. And I didn't liked the humor eather. After this mission I stoped playing. I play games because i want to have fun, joy and distraction. And I found this game feeling more like a work, than a enterntiment. Sorry for my negative opinion on this game dear reader especially if you like it and I'm sorry for burning your eyes with my English. But I wish a wonderfull day to everyone! :D

Found this game deeply boring and unoriginal. Even watching the gameplay here bring back the utter chore of playing it... The comments here are shocking, suggests a lot of people here never played games like Crackdown, infamous, Saints Row or Assassins Creed. Sunset Overdrive has *nothing* to add.

@@mickeybobbins I think that a lot of it is from execs wanting to make a game that sells to everyone and huge dev teams (from 800 to more than 1000 people) that both lack communication and end up having different goals and vision for a single game. We need more games that have a greater focus on what they want to achieve instead of games that want to achieve everything

@@ericvazquez2225 Must go to Chaos Squad in the Xbox One version with other players (pretty hard for some), get higher points to get rewards, get The Sleepless Outfit (including the light blue denim vest from tutorial videos and E3 2014 trailer) for male player character, and beat story mode including the iconic Fizzie boss fight; after story mode, have fun blasting OD with The Sleepless Outfit on and get even better weapons and amps.
Hell if I remember correctly, the trailer to Sunset Overdrive broke the 4th wall a few times and had humour in it and that's what brought me to the game. Played it during launch and it's such a gem

Played it this year for the first time. Absolutely bonkers and fun game. The assortment of weapons even blows away what Ratchet and Clank delivers.
I suggest you try the DLC as well, specially the robot factory one, it goes beyond meta

9:15 another example of that 1% is when you are trying to do precise wall running, more specifically when trying to get neon sings, there were so many times where I tried to go back and forth on a wall like an idiot to get a sign, and it's especially annoying when they are near a corner. I wish there was an option to easily turn around on a wall or go down and up them while running.
That being said this is probably the most fun I've had traversing in an open world game. And having to engage in it to not die stops the game form being too easy (unless you use the health trail amp, which is insanely broken). Nothing beats shredding through hords of OD at max style with all amps going haywire while having "Sunset City" by The Bronx blast in the backround.

That's really stretching it. It's a coincidence that they both are open world with cool traversal and have that voice actress. Other than that they have little in common.
Microsoft not trying to pick this company up and give them free reign was the dumbest decision ever. But this was at the height of the military shooter craze and this game wasn't appreciated until after that died. It definitely is now though. It's probably got the most reviews of any game on the digital store.
Sunset is probably one of my favorite video games for casual play, just grinding around rails and shooting at zombies is so much fun, it also had some insane boss fights and some awesome customizations. Plus the jokes were all on point. 100% would recommend if you want a fun game

This game just works so well didn’t take it self too serious but played into it also it forces you to not stick with the same weapons.
Hope another game like this comes out in the future. But I don’t think anything can really top this in the way that it works.

Honestly one of the most underrated games of all time.
I just love running around in this game, just chaining moves together is so satisfying in a way games like Tony hawk just didn't do it for me.
I think I'm gonna go pick this game up after work tonight, Insomniac has always made fun and colorful games.

What was crazy to me at the time this came out was I loved the Resistance series that Insomniac made (Fall of Man is the best imo), and then this comes seemingly out of nowhere as a totally different world, setting, genre, everything. They really put a lot of love into Sunset Overdrive being a completely new IP and essentially a playground to do something completely different than what they've made in the past and they nailed it.

This game is an absolute gem, this video was also a great time, my only gripe with like, every Sunset Overdrive review, is that they all completely ignore the "DLC", which is when you go to the oil rig and the FizzCo Robo City, as most reviewers will just mention it never got a sequal, and even using a quote from the character when they SEE the Fizz Co city and say "Maybe we'll know in a sequal" other then that, great video

I remember reading about it an a game magazine back in the day. But I somehow forgot about it entirely and when I first heard about Fortnite (still having no idea what it was about to become) I looked at the artstyle briefly and I thought to myself "Have't you seen this already years ago?!" xD

my experience with this game can be summed up in one specific moment, when I was 10 min from leaving with my parent, but I wanted to finish a quest, the marker showing across the river, so I opened the map to see if I could make it, hovering over the marker, I only then realized it gave me the choice to Fast travel. I didn't even know it was a thing, because the traversal had been sooo good at sucking me in, I had never found a reason to use it and to this day, I haven't experienced the same thing in any game I have played.
This game reminds me of JSRF and it's one of my favorite games of all time, so it's probably one of the best compliments i could possibly give to it

This is my most wanted sequel other than Half-Life 3. Sunset Overdrive is almost perfect and I adore it with every fiber of my being. It took until unlocking the air dash for it to click for me, but it clicked HARD.

Because of me being a playstation player, I had missed out on this game until a year ago when I decided to play on the game pass for PC, it was genuinely the most fun game I had played in a while. It was funny, weapons felt good, parkour was really fun, and the customization was awesome

It doesn't really need a remaster, I think. Just turning on the FPS boost for it on X|S and releasing a Playstation port with 60fps as well would be more than adequate, I think

@@RusticRonnie That's not exactly correct. Microsoft has the publishing rights to the first one, but the ownership was never in their hands. Insomniac owned it from start to finish, and so that publishing deal will come to an end, and it will probably be a decade after its initial launch.

Just played this game for the first time this year. Loved it! Unique gameplay and fun vibe. Enjoyed customizing my character to be totally out of this world and yet my character still seemed to fit in the world.
I overlooked Sunset Overdrive on release because it seemed a bit too much like a rip-off of Saint's Row 3+4. Got into it lately, played about 2h having crazy fun when I realized "holy sh*t, this is Tony Hawk with guns!" And just like that, I couldn't stop playing. The game flow is just so good and entertaining. It's a rare example where traversal is just as fun as the fights and they're mixed perfectly.
Tony hawks with guns is close, but I prefer, jetset radio meets Deadpool
This is easily one of my favorite open world games, one of the few I geniunely do enjoy and one of the best third person shooters ever made.
No one ever points out due it to being an Xbox console exclusive but this game was the game that brought fast paced movement back into shooters 2 years before Doom 2016 did all though this came out the same year as Titanfall but that had no single player campaign. Sunset Overdrive was even mocking cover based shooters in it's marketing too.
It's crazy how this game came out on the same console brand as Halo and Gears of War LMAO. It's insanity to me. I remember playing Gears of War 4 and this game in 2018 and while I don't dislike GOW4, it didn't feel half as fun as Sunset Overdrive.
While I do really like this game one big issue I have with it that can even extend to Ratchet and Clank as well is that there is too many weapons to point of being quanity over quality a lot of the weapons in general start to overlap in general. Resistance 1 and 3 handles this a lot better where you are given a good amount of weapons you will use a lot but not so many guns that you won't ever bother using.
Sunset Overdrive is one of my personal favourites, and absolutely amazing, I highly recommend playing it.
However, I will say that it has a couple problems that can mar the experience, especially for replayability. Like you mentioned, a lot of the sidequest chains are long enough that it becomes very tedious, and sometimes the battles can feel too easy. This is annoying the first time around, but you just never feel like doing them on later playthroughs. Speaking of which, the opening sequence is nice, but god the early-game tutorials are unskippable and terrible. They either slow you down or bring you to an absolute stop and wrench control away from the player while the narrator shouts at you about how things work, really slowly. It's at complete odds with the game's feeling of flow that's usually present. Some of the minor quest cutscenes can drag on too long and have much less effort than the ones for the main questline (which are great), and they're unskippable. There's also the issue of locking basic movement options behind story progression, which is ok for new players but feels jarring on repeat playthroughs. The super-bounce, air dash, and melee-slam bounce complete the traversal set in such an important way that not having them for a chunk of the game disrupts the core selling-point of the game.
These are all problems that only require minor tweaks to fix, and they would make enough of an improvement that it frustrates me that the game wasn't supported long enough for them to be fixed. Honestly I'd say without them it would have been a perfect game. Still, it's one of the greats of the generation IMO, and I'll drop everything to buy a sequel if it's ever announced.

Reading comments from the Saints row reboot, someone mentioned this game. So i got curious and now I am playing it. I am having so much fun trying to learn how to navigate the world, while killing enemies all around the map. I can definitely see Insomniac's Spiderman got its inspiration in this game.
This game is the definition of freedom and fun like there's so many creative ways to fight enemies and it never gets boring, it's like you combine skate boarding, roller skating and parkour together and guns and make a city into one giant skate park and BAM you got yourself a playground.

I miss it so much, I revisit it now and then and honestly I wish they gave it a sequel. The game was nigh perfect but I'd love to see it more refined, plus bringing back the multiplayer would be amazing.
Also the fact that Overcharge Drinks are an option to replace the currency in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is so good I'm glad they chose to reference it.

This is an opinion from someone who didn't like the game, from me. I have rather poor English skills so please excuse my mistakes, I'm thraying :)
So I've wanted to play Sunset Overdrive for quite some time (i'm a big fan of Ratchet & clank trylogy, especially the 3 and Gladiator [or Deadlocked]), I've watched a review or two when it come out, but I didn't own the Xbox (and still i don't have it) but thanks to GamePass I finally played it!
And I was bored And dissapointed. I didn't finished it. I played for like 5 hours And never picked it up again. I'm a Pole, and to my not perfect English i played in my native language, Polish. But dub was one of the worst i have ever heard, it was painfull. I could switch to English, but I wouldn't understand much (Don't ever play this game in Polish, I beg you). My lack of enterntainment was (I think) moustly because of dub. But I didn't like the gameplay eather. I didn't have fun shooting or grinding (or riding is a better word?) Or customise my character. I tried to have fun, and Just injoy the game, but I couldn't. I didn't like the charakters (I don't even remember they're names) I even despice and hate that nerd guy (you know, than one whe rescued and escort to his "friends" who were Talking only by writing) he was irritating. And I didn't liked the humor eather. After this mission I stoped playing.
I play games because i want to have fun, joy and distraction. And I found this game feeling more like a work, than a enterntiment.

Sunset Overdrive is one of my favorite Xbox One exclusives. I love the soundtrack, the city, the weapons. It's the apocalipse but awesome.
Found this game deeply boring and unoriginal. Even watching the gameplay here bring back the utter chore of playing it... The comments here are shocking, suggests a lot of people here never played games like Crackdown, infamous, Saints Row or Assassins Creed. Sunset Overdrive has *nothing* to add.
