- Our very first attempt at an American Civil War game using Black Powder 2nd edition rules. We are using our 12mm Kallistra figures, from an old trip to Salute. We fight a small action and have a go at learning the rules.

Let's see some more Black Powder ACW! That was entertaining.
We will definitely have another go at it - just need to find time to build and paint yet more minis!
Nice one chaps, a bloody affair 😅 i honestly thought the confederacy had it but the dice gods are fickle. Formations have such a large effect on your rolls, the biggest one for march column is the +1 modifier you recieve on the command rolls and +2 if they are on a road. Looking forward to more 😁 one thing if i may, you might want to look at reducing the movement distances and ranges a little to 2/3 or 1/2, the rules sort of assume you'll be playing at 28mm on 8ft or 6ft wide boards, once we'd reduced our ranges after the first few games we found the game opened up alot more 😁 Nice one again gents 👍
We considered reducing the ranges, and are still considering it. The thing is, we enjoy faster paced games, and want quick into action battles. Will give it a try though.

Enjoyed this game guys and will be buying epic ACW as a result!. Only rules point I noticed was you were rolling disorder for 6’s in hand to hand. This is only for shooting. Disorder in h to h is when units retreat or the charging unit is disordered from closing fire
Thanks for the tip mate. Worth saying, the minis in this video pre-date Warlord's Epic sclae, they are actually Kallistra. They have a very different look to the epic ones, but you probably knew that already.

Very cool, would love to see more of those types of Battle Reports. I have always wanted to get into this type of gaming, but not finding very many people in my area willing to play.
Was the same for me. Local folk played a bit of Bolt Action, and slowly, slowly they have been persuaded to try other things.
Love the banter between you two. lol. Very gentlemanly to remind Kaiser about his canon and then have the unit turn to hamburger. A very fun and informative Black Powder bat rep.

I really enjoyed that. Cavalry in Black Powder never perform as the movies would have you believe.
We played ACW in 6mm and reduced the ranges to cm from inches. We were using infivudual regiments to represent entire brigades (with brigades as divisions) to refight larger engagements. It also forced the fighting much closer and made manoeuvring more of a thing.
I am considering this sort of thing.

a better activation mechanic is sword and spear, which all the dice are gathered in a bag and drawn then rolled. With the rolled dice you assign them to units of your choice. Wish they had a black powder version
Interesting point - we are thinking of coming back to this - need to find time to paint the minis though.
I have only recently discovered Black Powder and Boy, oh Boy, now that is what I call a brilliant game ... That was love at first sight, and the love just grow more and more ...

@@terrain-hardy Definitely not the last - but yeah it has been a long time. Interestingly, we have painted a bit of new scenery and are considering playing again but reducing the ranges down to cms... see how it plays.

at 17:55 you take a break test after getting one more hit over your stamina. during closing fire its if you equal or exceed your total.

That was fun, I've not watched an ACW Black Powder battle play out before - some interesting things going on. Generally I prefer larger skirmish games to mass battle games (Bolt Action, CoC, Sharpe Practice, Dragon Rampant etc.), but always happy to expand my playlist! Loved the presentation as always, yeehaw, yesireebob etc. and so on.
Largely I agree. I think the appeal of this particular system is it does play fairly fast at least.

true enough myh friend. There are 24 figs in each of those 12 regiments and that is a small game. They are not much smaller than FoW minis either.

Word of warning - there is a MOUNTAIN of infantry of infantry in there, far more than you will paint in years... and essentially there is nothing else. Maybe buy the brigade box, or just grab a few sprues on eBay...

Stapleton Cottons Light Cavalry if against French Cavalry sometimes advanced, then fired with carbines then charged usually the French would break before contact.
I’m trying to sort out the book, to quote when, and where.

at 23:12 it looks like he had his choice as the unit in column is a little bit closer even though its at a small angle, you should have measured it.
What size bases did y’all use?
I was curious if you all were planning on making more battle reports set in the American civil war?
Definitely - the challenge is always the painting queue - need to find time to build and paint some scenery and new regiments to scale up the forces a bit I think.

Great game. Glad to see the BP in action. When taking a morale test with excess casualties I think you also take a minus one if they are disordered as well. I also assumed you weren’t letting the union infantry go into square, not a very ACW thing. Looking forward to some more. 😃

@@Raven-ff8vg No attack columns either? Interesting. Not sure how much difference there is to what Napoleon would call a column of attack, and what Grant would call a double line, but thats splitting hairs I guess.

On the first dice roll - I believe your infantry gets a free move when in march column, so you can move them even if you fail the command roll. Might be wrong...
I think you're right - we were in attack column though. My feeling about march columns is they are not for the battlefield.
The bishop wrote an excellent Undergrad thesis on the diplomatic relations of the Confederacy. I shall read it in full at the outset of the next video.

Not really, we are only on a 4x4.
Have you seen if WG's minis for Epic ACW suit these Kallistra figures u already have?
I need to have a closer look at some of the cavalry etc - the style of the infantry is very different sadly

What is the model scale here?
12mm Kallistra.
ACW Cavalry were historically simply mounted infantry and the ‘eyes’ of the army. There were some instances of mounted charges (Stuart’s Black Cavalry at 1st Bull Run) and even large Cavalry Battles (Yellow Tavern) but primarily they would seize and hold ground until the infantry arrived. Often they’d have their own accompanying Artillery.
Sheridans ride? His charge at winchester? Probably the largest cavalry charge in the civil war?

AT 16:01 You cant move your unit up, you already rolled the dice and you stated your going into line. you did not say i'm moving up and going into line or, i'm going into line then moving up.
Don’t you only get to fire if you are in line formation?

Mixture of cheap chinese trees from amazon based and mounted on a footprint which is just plastic card flocked and textured.

The trees were mounted on a piece of 3mm plastic with holes drilled in for the trees..... As they don't come with stumps or bases.
The 'woods' footprints are from gale force nine battlefield in a box.

The Confederate cavalry didn’t achieve anything, I think one of cavalry units didn’t even move? The Confederates didn’t even fire at the Union skirmishers who were shooting at them. And the Confederates forgot to fire their cannon in round 3. While all of the Union line was firing.
The rebels didn't utilize their cannon very well lol

@@ModellingforAdvantage nice. I can't find much of this in batreps. And your good sportsmanship helps the game batrep. Some people get super competitive and it makes the batrep boring.
Also, maybe use some cotton balls if ya want for the firing squad it makes it look like the fired their rifles. Looks cool and helps mark what unit has fired too. Warlord makes these LEDs that if you place the cotton on it makes it look as if they are firing volleys!
24:00 come on you cant pick and choose when your units are in attack column and you decide now ill use that rule when it benefits me. you should have told the union player that when you shot at him 20 times.
31:00 you only get support if your within 6 inches, you dont get any for charging or being disordered or shaken so.. union 2 +1 support left. and confederate 2 no support. not within 6 inches. union wins by 1,

You may find our ACW content difficult viewing sir... fed on a diet of Westerns as a kid that terrible accent is inescapable whenever I am called to consider the USA. Especially the Southern. My list of bad accents is not exclusive to the Deep South, of course.
