- HEY GUYS! Back with another reaction to XG where we dig into [XG TAPE #2] GALZ XYPHER ! They absolutely executed these raps here. They are all Japanese! But they speak English Japanese and Korean! Although they all speak English, Maya is the most fluent! Maya sounds American when she speaks! I think XG is the Japanese response to all the K-Pop girl bands like Black Pink! Notice they all speak Japanese, Korean and English! They were made to appeal to the world! 👍👍👍

I speak Korean and I'm a Gen X who grew up in the fledgling stage of Kpop when it first began. These girls are different. They can put a western tongue on the Japanese and Korean languages to flow so effortlessly. This is IMPOSSIBLE to do yet here they are. Every Kpop "rapper" cannot do this. To me, they are still stuck in the same Kpop anunciations which was what makes Kpop undesirable for me...AND IM KOREAN! 😂 These girls are marketed as a global hip-hop group. They are what I've been waiting for for almost 30 yrs.

oh yeah one more thing, The girls love 90s and 2000s hip hop and R&B. A lot of people don't know this but Japan is still big with old hip hop and r&B. Kokona's role model is Lauryn Hill. The girls love Destiny's child, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Mary J Blidge, TLC (maybe that's why Maya had the left eye patch like Lisa left eye lopez), and others.

great reaction! i love how XG managed to get you (a kpop stan) and your boyfriend (a rap/hiphop fan) get hyped for one girl group!
also, for clarification, they are not a kpop group. they are simply an r&b/hiphop group aiming for global recognition. they only got that kpop production value that makes them look kpop, understandable since their CEO/producer is a former kpop idol. i'm pretty sure he's got the connections (plus fund from Avex, maybe) that got XG to perform on korean music shows. japan doesn't have a platform like that, especially how korea also releases them online, where it is more accessible - easy enough decision for the producer. killing two birds with one stone (tv + internet). but they got some interviews for shows in japan, although they haven't performed there yet.
regarding the rap, we are not sure if they wrote them or not, but it won't be a bit farfetched since Cocona (the 1st one) has been rapping since she was a child. Cocona and Jurin were students of Avex Artist Academy, an entertainment academy by XG's parent company Avex Inc. This school offers rap/hip hop courses, which includes song/lyrical writing. Hikaru from kep1er was also an Avex student and might have done the rap/hiphop courses as well as the dance course when she was still a student. She actually was supposed to debut with XG but I guess didn't make the final cut, but I think their producer wanted her to join XG once her contract with kep1er is finished.
another thing, you might be seeing them as a different group from all other kpop groups simply because they are not packaged as a kpop group. japan is not ready, nor are they open to groups like XG, since all existing groups like them are not able to penetrate mainstream media. and now they're competing with kpop groups, which are more palatable (and well produced, imo) to the gp, they basically have no ground to stand on. Unless you're from a well-known and well-connected agency (like Avex and LDH).
Also!! XG has so much more content on their channel! would be very excited if you decide to delve deeper into them. You can watch them in chronological order, it's pretty organized. Also they have 3 types of extra content that showcase their talent: XG Tape (Rap, they currently have 2), XG Move (dance, plenty of content here), and XG Vox (vocal-only performances)
also, just a PS, japanese groups are not only the cute, bubbly idol groups. there are a HUGE number of groups in japan that caters to all genres of music!

I would like to add also that Harvey, Juria, Chisa and Maya are former AVEX artist academy students. Jurin said that the one she knows the longest is Juria. They had the same vocal class. Maya and Kokona are childhood friends. Jurin and Harvey model together. Kokona looks up to Jurin, she loves her a lot (you have to watch the behind the scenes). Jurin is a former professional snowboarder, she's won 3 medals. She is also a former model, she surfs and skateboard also. She was also part of AVEX ALL STAR team and AVEX shorty with Harvey which basically means only the best students make it to those two groups. There is so much more but at the same time not enough.

In terms of 4th Gen Stray Kids can definitely execute this type of raps, but that’s for Boy Group. In girl groups, well I think only XG has this many different rap styles so there bodied them all.
(I don’t count Soyeon though since she’s the only one in G-Idle that can rap like this. But in terms of Girl Groups that has many rappers, definitely XG takes it)

Cocona did Surround Sound by JID, Maya did Dreamville by JID, Harvey did I Won by TY Dolla, and Jurin did Saoko by Rosalia. AND the girls wrote their own (lyrics or bars) to fit the beat, which is why they know the bars by heart, and they delivered it smoothly, clearly and cleanly. AND they did this video when they were 15-16 years old. I challenge any Kpop girl group who can do exactly the same.. maybe they can, in about 5 years.... maybe. LOL 🤣
