IMHO, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is THE finest/baddest supersonic jet interceptor, fighter/bomber to ever fly the skies! Vertical surfaces do not help you turn. They keep you stable. And it's not about the amount - it's about the surface. Also F-16 has a single vertical surface, the hell you on about.

Then Turkey cornered the U.S. into the burden of MAINTAINING those Phantoms indefinitely. We found green corrosion sludge on the cannons, we found three out of four motor mounts missing...on planes they were flying. Our maintenance crews were harassed by guards from a "cement plant" that pulled their blue air force bus over; The "cement plant" had 12 ft razorwire fencing and SOVIET armed guards...the bus HAS to drive by it. Rifle butts to our boys heads, civilians (yes, women and children) being gunned down after being dragged off of that bus for not having their passports... Just how much DO you know about life on Incirlik Air Base? Turkey has not kept up a very hospitable environment for it's champion.
