    I don't remember an Arrow of Light award when I was a cub scout (about 55 years ago). At first glance I thought you meant the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow. Finished products look great, and I applaud your involvement in scouting.

      +Adam Gabbert I've had my scroll saw for a while now but I'm just starting to use it on a regular basis. The model I have by no means a top of the line version... and the sawdust blower thingie is broken... but it gets the job done! I highly recommend getting one. They're a lot of fun!

    Not to copy what Patrick said but... Nice work Matt!

  • @TheGeekPub
    @TheGeekPub 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude. You are way better on the scroll saw than me! What blade are you using?

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheGeekPub I got better as I went along... that's for sure. I'm not sure about the blade... it's 1/8 thick and has over 50 teeth (hope that helps)... Looking at the footage I suspect the blade tension could have been increased a bit. I also used a thin spiral bit to remove the inside of the letter shapes.
      I broke a few blades during this build... those things heat up pretty quick when they're cutting thick hardwood.

    Don't you have a CNC? If not, I thing you need one! Good stuff!

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Richard Wisner I do own a CNC. I purchased the small x-carve a while back. These awards were smaller than the carving area... plus I used very thick hardwood, which is a lot of material to carve through. I just figured I'd use the scroll saw. Glad you like them! :-)

  • @PaulJohnsLife
    @PaulJohnsLife 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Gorgeous job! I'll be an Arrow of Light leader next year. Will have to consider this idea. Are you a Scout Leader? I notice this is (at least) the 2nd Arrow of Light project you've done.

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul John It's so cool you'll be an Arrow of Light leader next year! No... I'm not a Scout Leader. However, my friend is and both of the projects I created are for his troop and his son. Also, I've always been a big supporter of anything that helps our kids become better adults.

  • @BALES5000
    @BALES5000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a lot of scrolling! I'm curious if doing some of the back panel work on the CNC was an option/consideration? And if so, why did you decide to use the scroll saw instead?

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BALES Great questions! Two factors made me decide to use the scroll saw: 1) The wood is 3/4 thick hardwood. That would be a lot of material for the CNC to chew through and it would have taken a lot of time and caused a lot wear on the bit/router, and 2) I own the small footprint CNC and this image is larger than my machine can handle. In fairness, I could have carved this in two sessions but I didn't want to deal with alignment issues.
      The letters could have been done on the CNC machine... but I just felt like using my bandsaw.
      Isn't that the great thing about owning your own shop... you can do whatever you want. Ha ha. Thanks for watching!

    I'm looking for ideas how to make a few awards for my A.O.L.s but I don't want to lose a finger. Safety? What safety?

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Safety is important... no doubt about it. Each person must take responsibility for their own safety. I try to always be safe. Good luck with building your awards.

  • @Shopcat22
    @Shopcat22 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice. I saw another comment where you said you broke a few blades. Did you also fill your pants? When those blades break I about have a heart attack. Love the editing as well.

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Waylight Creations The scariest thing is the loud clattering noise the machine makes after the blade snaps. Thankfully... both pieces of the blade always stayed connected rather than flying outward. The spiral bits would often come loose (not break... rather just disconnect).

    • @Shopcat22
      @Shopcat22 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome Wood Things I had the same problem with the spiral blades. I had watched another guy here on TH-cam use them and contacted him in the comments of the video and he suggested a brand he uses. I'm going to try them in the near future. But yeah, that clattering noise is the worst, especially because you're so focused on what you're doing. It reminds me of that stupid Exorcist pop-up thing.

    Hi Matt, I’m building this for my AOL den! And I’m almost done, what size bit is used to do the engraving of the pack and year? Also where do you find the letter templates used for the boys names? Thanks again Sam

    • @AwesomeWoodThings
      @AwesomeWoodThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, that’s great.
      I used a 1/16 uncut bit for the small lettering CNC work and a larger bit for the larger letters (maybe a 1/8 bit). All of the words were simply typed into the CNC software. I forget what fonts I used.
      I hope this helps! Good luck!!

    • @daphlavor
      @daphlavor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Matt, for the info. I’m going to use a dremel tool to do the lettering and a band saw for the names, and one of the moms in our pack will add her wood burning touch to cap it off, thanks again, these will be presented at our Blue and Gold banquet soon.
