I feel this poem so much. Everything down to that physical closeness of teenage girls, the "trading smalls and bigs of our respective bodies", the discomfort of getting to know your own body and it's muscles and angles simply because there is blood coming out of it that you need to plug up.. Really nice poem for all young girls to hear, and all women to smile at and remember.
I relate to it too, but those memories don't make me smile. It's sad to remember that discomfort and fear towards getting to know my body like that and how uncomfortable my friend was in hers that she would wish to trade parts for mine, and sad that others girls have that to remember too
To me it's about the transition to adulthood. Tampons aren't for little girls. She had a friend to usher her into it, but the transition sure wasn't painless for her. Of course, you could take it at face value and say that it's a poem about the first time she used a tampon.
I don't know what metaphor ppl are talking about. But she's literally talking about period, and how disgusting pads are, as opposed to tampons. She's ready to swim because most girls do swim in tampons (I don't, I personally don't even use it). Her friend exposed her to something different & now she hates pads😂but it's art, it's up to ur interpretation. If someone thinks it's a metaphor, that's what it is to them, don't look for an answer, just make it ur own.
It’s not just that. It’s about her going from child to adolescence. The tampon is a symbol of maturity. Her friend Jordan knew how to use a tampon before Olivia but still she was willing to put it into her. The last line is less “now you can swim” and more “now you have entered maturity”
I think it also means that maturity means accepting your body. "the bigs and malls we wished to trade" and the part where she is scared/uncomfortable with her vagina and her friend tries to put the tampon in and she is mature and shit and then she passes out (maybe from the pain idk)
this poem isn't a metaphor, it's just a true story
And a great example of how our own bodies can be terrifying to our underdeveloped minds
I’m a simple girl. I see Olivia, I click.
Jenn Anderson same
honestly 😂
she deserves all the applauds of the world

Completely unrelated to the poem itself but she is absolutely stunning
This was an amazing piece. The imagery she used to create this visual was amazing, one heck of a wordsmith.
VinoVenitas hiii can you explain to me what the poem is all about? 😊
Her poems make me feel more okay about being a teenage girl
YES MY FUCKING LEGEND DID THAT! I’ve been waiting for her to perform this
After buying her book, I’ve been waiting for this one.

Olivia commented that this poem isn't a metaphor, that it's just a true story from her life.
Very nice poetry reading!!! Poetry...
I love Olivia and her poems. But can someone explain this poem to me? I don't fully understand it
it's literally just about her using a tampon for the first time
Yeah, it's just a true story from her life.
