  • Memorial Park Cemetery is a 104 year old historic Black cemetery. The city of Tampa had plans to own the property but lost control of it after a property developer outbid them in an auction.

I've got questions... the banks typically won't accept bids for less than what was owed on the mortgage... so if the mortgage was around $9800, why didn't the city buy the property directly from the family?
Also, the city typically places liens on properties that violate code, and often times it's for failure to maintain the property. So, if Tampa was responsible for maintenance of the property, did they not maintain it in order to put the lien on it & force a foreclosure?
It sounds like the city forced a foreclosure in order to buy the land for as little as possible, cutting the family out of any money from the sale.
Also, the new owner can't really do anything with the property. They'd have to apply to change the zoning in order to develope the land. But I don't think the city of Tampa will approve the zoning changes since they wanted the land.
This is a fine mess the city created.
Why didn't Tampa buy it directly from the family & instead force a foreclosure?? 🤔

Something tells me that this was allowed to happen because of it being a historically Black cemetery. A history of disregard for non-White cemeteries was, and apparently, still is happening in Florida (and the South, in general). This same city has a large area of land in the Seminole Heights section with businesses built over another Black cemetery. Luckily, one of the businesses allowed archeologists to study it.
If a developer builds on this site, buyers need to be made aware of the potential of some bodies being left behind (as they will likely attempt to move them). I wouldn't buy a home there.

Memorial Park was established as a burial place for African American VETERANS of the world war, and many of the soldiers who died in France were laid to rest here. You tell me how many VETERAN cemeteries that you know of that are sold to property developers? The owner who purchased it in 1929 took care of it until his death in 2019. And THAT's why it ended up in the "hands of the city." According to you then YOU are responsible for the care and upkeep of the cemetary your loved ones are buried in. If you don't maintain it then to hell with you and your family members. Dig them up and throw them in the trash because we want a new shopping center. It's not OUR job to maintain you or your family members place of burial. Watch it you may eat your words in more ways than one. Being callus and cold hearted is never becoming.
