I’m so glad I didn’t decide to buy a condo in 2020. Figured in a few years prices and insurance will go up. I just stuck to renting. Been having great deal on this apartment rental in Jupiter. $1600/month for the last three years. Two story apartment complex too.
That happens if you dont have any regulations and laws protecting for the average American, i am from Austria, here you can maximum rise the costs at 10% and that also only special cases, not like that, where are law makers, many people will end up homeless.
You can run a story like this everyday for the next five years and still won’t get to all the people who are in danger of losing their condos due to these assessments. These old buildings are getting more expensive to insure and the coverage is shrinking. Just in time for a possible record setting Hurricane Season. If we take a direct hit, all of Florida’s homeowners will feel it!
You have zero knowledge what the cost of owning property with taxes, HOA, mortgage and upkeep expenses... $1200 is a lot of money added on to the other monthly cost.. Are you thinking its only $1200 a month without the other cost or just trolling?
Sadly this is true.. the condos have spent all of their reserves, after working 3 years one on St Pete Beach that was two buildings of 13 stories undergoing a total renovation.. I saw what happened and saw assessments, giving me the final decision to never own a condo even if it was given to me, no thanks..
That’s sad. It’s best to be poor in the USA. Poor people seem to get more benefit than the middle class or middle lower class. If you rent in a bad neighborhood, rent is cheap and if make under minimum wage you get medical insurance and food stamps and if you qualify or are patient enough you can get into section 8 or something similar. Anyone who is trying to make it out of the ghetto into a better lifestyle, sees things like what this lady is going through and, can easily get discouraged and what about tax season? You have to pay taxes if you make above whatever the USA says you can only make. I mean nothing seems fair. I speak from experience, 8 yrs ago I was making under minimum wage and had government insurance and food stamps and would get taxes back. Now I have two jobs, live in a 1 bedroom apartment with my son, I am trying to get out of the slums and all of a sudden now I had to pay taxes for making more than the minimum amount and my rent continues to rise. So where is the motivation to live better? I was thinking about buying a house or a condo. I can forget that thought. I’m not trying to be homeless at least renting i can pick up and go. It’s all sad. My prayers to that lady. I hope someone has sympathy and compassion and just let her live the rest of her life there. She has been there for 30yrs. Why take it from her now over petty things. Sad 😔
I'm 70 on SS and get no assistance. My neighbor is 24 has 5 children and pregnant, never been married or worked and she gets $1K a month in food benefits and pays $75 a month in rent. She's almost 1/3 my age and her business is having babies she ignores.
“Assessments” have become a convenient way for HOAs and unethical building contractors to guarantee themselves a permanent pay raise by extracting from vulnerable homeowners. There needs to a popular movement and laws against these extortionary abuses.
You misunderstand what a special assessment is: It is an expense that the fellow condo and HOA owners place on themselves in order to update/upgrade or repair their own properties. The HOA is made-up of fellow owners who also have to pay theses same fees. This isn't being done out of meanest. And why are you even trying to blame building contractors for these assessments?
What does a special assessment in the amount of $1200 cover? Honestly I think every residence should have their properties inspected yearly. I’m not sure $1200 is ridiculous if it’s not been done in years.
I’d be interested to know if her condo is a high rise because I think that law is aimed at those. And what does $1200 as a first installment from every resident cover? Where has the regular HOA payment been going? Have they done an audit of the association? This report just glosses over the topic without answering any real questions. Someone needs to do an investigative report for this poor woman. Where is Shannon Behnken?
Stop buying condos. They are overpriced apartments.

Thank DeSantis who's in bed with the Real Estate Tycoons who want to turn everything into rentals.
