  • Black - in the shape of crows - is casting its shadow over a Devon dairy farm. Pest controller Tom Davies is ready to take them on in a pre-dawn decoying raid. Meanwhile some gamekeepers and shoot operators are worried about the effect covid is having on bookings for next season's gameshooting. David Whitby, James Davies Cooke and Jason Mayhew talk about their experiences and what they could mean for shooting. And elephants - are there too many of them? News editor Ben O'Rourke talks to South African professional hunter and True Green Alliance founder Ron Thompson, Herman Els of South Africa's National Hunting & Shooting Association, and Pieter Nel of Southern African Wildlife College. We're giving away a £200 trailcam, we have an exclusive offer on Vario hearing protection, David leads on grouseshooting news on the News Stump, and Charlie brings out the best hunting and shooting videos from TH-cam in Hunting TH-cam, including one with him in it. It's all in this week's #FieldsportsBritain

    Part of the problem with elephants is that their migration routes have been closed. Many moons ago there was a program to translocate elephants from the Kruger Park to areas where they were scarce. Now bear in mind the state of most of Africas' roads, only two elephant per truck at an average speed of 20kph, that means they are in the truck for days, they have to be fed and watered and often sedated. It cost mega bucks to transport one family group 500k, where is that money to come from? Forget the "charities" little if any of the donations arrive where it's needed, most goes on "admin", advertisements, and the rest into somebodys' back pocket. To maintain diversity they have to be culled.

      I have been shown the remains of trees after elephants used them for food and scratching posts.
      Then I was shown a stand of African Ebony and told that elephants still avoid them because they still associate them with the humans who used to live there (about 90 years ago).
      However, you are probably more aware of the general changes.

    Elephants will find it difficult to cross a sharp sided deep moad, I think.
    Are there not traces of such defending areas in Northern Nigeria? They would have been created before any visitors arrived from Europe.

    Just to clarify. The judge’s analogy was that in the same way a Swiss Army knife is a multifunction utility device so too are AR-15 pattern rifles multipurpose utility tools.

    I’ve shot just under a 1000 in two months on two dairy farms since the first week of may where you have maize clamps you will always have crows I normally flight them into a clamp or sitty tree you’ll often shoot more in summer then winter

    • @dave_724
      @dave_724 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Pete graham netting doesn’t work even if a clamp is covered they will still come in for other feeds or peck the heavier green sheets until there’s a hole in them or feed from the feed in the feed passages this time of year they spend most of there time picking young maize plants out the field after they’ve had an easy meal at first light

    • @tombramall2578
      @tombramall2578 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As an ‘uneducated’ dairy farmer I would still like to reassure Pete Graham that nets and bird scorers just do not work. We are inundated with crows and after 2 years of avoiding shooting because of the noise my village neighbours have decided enough is enough. The banal comment of ‘lust for death’ is offensive and inaccurate. People should refrain from making comments on subjects they know so little about.

    • @dave_724
      @dave_724 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tombramall2578 used bird nets all winter last year and bird scarers which don’t work after a week there’s a lot more to managing corvid problems on dairy farms shooting is a continues job especially at this time of year at the moment there hammering maize ground and still consistently plaguing both farms I shoot on of which I’ve worked on both

    • @TheMomanslm

      Funny how "educated" people offer "solutions" without real world experience.
      Their solutions offer short term success at best but almost always long term decimation of what they intend to protect.
      They decry hunting as immoral because they say so. Many like hunting. It is enjoyable. There is nothing wrong with enjoying your sport. Antis hate you and hate that you enjoy hunting but they wreck wildlife and livestock at every opportunity.

    First a moan. Sorry. Tom Davis miss-hit a lot of those crows. Either get a bit more sleep Tom, get a bit closer or use heavier shot. It does not look good to antis or shooters seeing shot crows falling still alive. Gamekeepers are 'country custodians' and 'shoots' provide them with the practical workplace to protect the wider countryside, from vandals and vermin, that destroy the wider flora and fauna. It is a necessary business and pragmatically it must earn its keep. The only present viable solution is game shooting. This activity provides an edible by product, while gaining the wider benefits of wildlife and habitat protection. Money provided by game shooters pays the wages of these 'country custodians". Game keepers are not simply armchair conservationists, but dedicated and sincere working folk. We need these committed individuals and the commercial shoots that empower them to benefit the ecology and the economy of our country. Their input is vital at this difficult time in history.
