    SOCATA has very little to do with Japanese as it stands for SOciété de Construction d’Avions de Tourisme et d’Affaires, which can be translated as General Aviation and Business Airplanes Manufacturing Company. Not the prettiest name, but it had its logic. In the first part of the XX century, it was called Morane Saulnier, a famous WW1 French military airplane builder. It developed also the Paris, a 4 seat business jet in the 60s. The Tobago TB10 (180hp CSP) was the first developed of the TB series late 70s, followed by the TB9 (160hp FP) Tampico and Trinidad TB20 (250hp CSP) early 80s. The TB21, a turbo charged version of the TB20 first flew around 1985. SOCATA and Mooney worked together to develop a 6 seater turbine airplane based on an existing Mooney project. The resulting plane was a complete redesign by SOCATA, wider and more comfortable than the Mooney prototype. Still the name of the series (TBM700, TBM850, TBM900…) reflects the dual origins of the concept:TB + Mooney. TB 30 and 31 are military tandem airplanes developed for the training of French airforce in the first part of the 80s, the TB31 being a turbo prop version with only one airplane to ever fly. Socata also envisioned to develop a twin engine which would have been called the Tangara. Socata was acquired by DAHER which kept only the TBM series, still in production and constant improvement to this day.

    Fantastic Commentary. Makes the Video.

    I imagine for a non French speaker the name may quite strange 😇, anyway it's nice video, my first flight was in a TB10 when I was 14 years old, and I have a cousin working in the factory Tarbes, I'm so proud of him😊

    Really like this aircraft with modern interior compared to super old dirty cessna and pipers. Non pilot passengers will like this interior more plus the large windows.

      well you can get the Cessnas and so with glass cockpits too.. but i have flown in a TB09 (with older style gauges) and its by far more confortable and better visibility arround than a 172 (obviously not bellow :D ) .. never was in a 182 so i cant say about that one

    To understand how good they are : these "smalls" TBs were made by the same guys doing the TBM 900, from Socata, then " DAHER-Socata" , finaly became "DAHER"
    so, if you buy a TB 20 you buy a tiny TBM

    The TB-30 and -31 are tandem military trainers. The -31 never made it to production AFAIK. The prototype is displayed at the Lourdes airport. Your french was fine btw !

    Interior of the older ones reminds me of the thunderbirds for some reason

    You forgot the TB9 Tampico trainer.

  • @ebeirne1
    @ebeirne1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You are factually incorrect in a number of areas.
    The TB9 was designed as a trainer fitted with 160hp engine and fixed pitch prop. IAS of 105kt
    The TB10 was sold as a tourer with 180hp engine and VP prop. IAS of 117kt
    The TB200 was just a TB10 but with a 200hp fuel injected engine and VP prop. IAS of 125Kt. Again this aircraft was sold as a tourer (not trainer)
    I could go on with the differences of the other models but that would take too long.
    Finally, the Gen 2 (GT) models had the same fuselage and wings but were fitted with flush glazing and as you mentioned the Fin had a new filler, these models came into production from 2000 to 2005.
    In retrospect the aircraft could be seen as the Cirrus of their time, bringing many new changes to the single engine GA aircraft when compared to Piper and Cessnas.

    They are very expensive to operate , everything is lifed, be careful if your operating on a AMP

      What the components? Apart from engine + prop... looking for a Cherokee 140, I came across these & it seriously came into my buying decision. Much appreciated

      @@mafarachisi check out the ADS and make sure they have been done , there is some proper gotchas, we run a TB 200. Spares are eye watering expensive . On the plus point they fly like a dream

    • @DiMoraDiamond
      @DiMoraDiamond 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not completely true. Not everything is "lifed" other than engine mount and nose gear assembly (10,000 hours!) The engines are standard Lycoming, the Propellers are standard Hartzell in 2 or 3 blade (there is an AD on the older 2 blades for hub cracks; magnetically inspect every 100 hours or replace for affected S/N hubs)...wing spar corrosion can be an issue for some S/N in the series (pre-purchase inspection can be critical), and AIRFRAME parts spares can be expesive, but the airframe is still fully supported by Daher. I would argue that *it depends* when talking maintenance costs. As cheap as a Cessna or Piper or Mooney? If talking engine or prop or brakes...costs are the same. If talking specialized airframe parts...yes, spares can be more expensive. Avionics are standard Bendix King, or in newer, refreshed airplanes, a mix of Garmin and Bendix King. Intercoms were often PS Engineering. In exchange for the possibility of higher cost airframe parts, you get amazing visibility, a wide cockpit, comfortable seats, GREAT handling with short, responsive control throws, and a very nice looking airplane that just feels modern compared to an old beat 1950's designed Cessna, Piper or Mooney.

      I am looking at a TB20 and wondering about it's cost vs a DA40D.
      It have the range I like but hopefully not too expensive to run. The DA40 can be run cheaply with diesel but really is a small plane with smaller 135hp engine.

      @@DiMoraDiamond I like the stats and usual sale price of these, but that bit about air-frame parts makes me think the reason they are cheap(ish) is they likely wind up on the ground waiting for parts, or they are sold slightly prior to something expensive (other than engine overhaul)... Also, l suspect it's a bit advanced for a first plane. (not buying anything soon, but perhaps eventually, so I continually quest the internet for plane details for fun)
