Somi is clearly affected by the comments about her body and felt the need to prove herself by posting her current low weight. Honestly I wish her the best, nobody deserves that and she has so much pressure to look perfect especially for this comeback. I hope she’s taking care of herself both mentally and physically. She does look happier and more energetic this comeback.

and i need to clarify that she cried bcs of fans comment about her comeback, saying she’s doing really great and she felt touched by it NOT bcs of iv drips or her diets. and fyi, for this comeback she said she gained muscle so it’s different from previous comeback. i think we should stop talking about someone’s body. we don’t know how much pressure she got. from these past 4 weeks, somi was really happy and i think that’s enough. it’s her body, she know what’s the best for her. as a fans i think we should respect her decision

I'm gonna be honest as a student studying nutrition and medical biology in college. Her exercise routine is great, she clearly has great muscle definition and is keeping her body fit. I'm sure for the most part she is healthy right now, however, that won't change the fact that she is underweight and has been since WYWF. She has better habits now than she did before, but the issue isn't in how she is now, it is about how being underweight will affect her in the future. I can guarantee she is not getting her periods and if she is they are irregular, if she were to ever get sick with the body she currently has it would take a massive toll on her body causing her to take a much longer time to recover than normal. Being underweight can affect fertility, brain function can create fatigue and anaemia (Depending on iron consumption) it is not something that people should be striving for.
I genuinely hope she gets some mental health therapy because it's clear that the pressure from the public has given her the impression that being in her healthy weight range is not good and that she can only look good if underweight. The thing that sticks out the most to me is the fact that she posted her height and weight in that post knowing people would see how underweight she is, indicating that she doesn't see the fact that it isn't healthy in the long run. The fact is that she isn't just Korean she is also Canadian, her healthy weight and body range will never be that of a petite Korean woman which is what seems to be her goal, because it's simply not in her genes. Somi is only 20 so she's still very young, I just hope that as she matures she stops taking the public's opinion so personally and is able to just live an unbothered healthy life.

Sorry but are you sure you’re a student? Cause when you went into the Somi is mixed territory I was like WTF?!?
First, if this was the case where are people up in arms about Yuna from ITZY? She has the same height as Somi and more or less the same body. How is Yuna fitting into your asian “petite” body stereotype?!?!?! And also where is the hate there? Or even worry. None.
Also and more WORRYINGLY to say Somi doesn’t get her period is a HUGE assumption, one that I bet you are NOT qualified to opinionate ( even as a student). Not only that but you ALSO don’t have access to her diet, exercise routine and lifestyle to give a diagnosis on her healthy.

I can agree with you. I took health sciences as my science courses in university and we’re taught that a little bit of extra fat is necessary for protection of organs and other vital functions. It’s generally commonly understood that definition in the abs or having abs without flexing isn’t necessarily the proper indicator for health.
I used to do a deprivation diet and I actually did have issues with anemia and loss of my period even though I was not nearly as thin.
I’m also full East Asian. I’m apple shaped so not exactly that petite, though I’m obviously smaller than most westerners. Not all, but on average. It’s a statistically fair assumption, though it might raise an eyebrow or two depending on the person.

@@Didi_Online Yes Yuna is underweight too… most idols are. Literally so many senior idols talk about the pressure to diet and how they feel so much healthier and better now that they put on weight. It’s a rough industry. Yuna and Somi are both underweight but I guess the thing about somi is she has publicised her eating habits so much people are bound to talk about it meanwhile Yuna seems to either be more ‘naturally’ thin or not expose her diet so much. If you didn’t know asian people have lower bone density so they are naturally thinner, somi being mixed is actually a very fair comment.

Idk why people expect her to be totally a normal adult while she's been scrutinised for her body and shamed for it since she was 15? She's what, 21 now... been told to lose a certain amt of weight ( as seen in sixteen ) in a week, is that not going to have an effect on a 15 yr old.... she obviously believes her skinniest is her best which is why she posted her weight celebrating it... because she's been praised the most for it since she was a kid...
i think blacklabel might have helped her achieve her skinniest in a healthy way... first she gained weight in birthday, she was bodyshamed at that time, then she has gradually lost weight... getting thinner in wywf and getting muscle definition in dd, she looks like she wants to keep up her dd weight..
Instead of appreciating her for her healthy diet, people are now skin shaming her...
Its not easy going from a habit of 3 bananas a day to a healthy diet,
She has been conditioned to believe that her thinnest is her best... u can't really expect her to be happy with how she looked in birthday... she was 15 and she's still only 21.. she's a kid!!!

A lot of you requested this but I also wanted to remake the older video. After reading some comments there was a frequent critique that my last video was interpreted a bit mean or hostile towards Somi and that was not my intention. So I changed a bit of the wording that may have left negative feelings.
I noticed a lot more comments tearing her down on that video as well and thought I needed to go deeper into the life Somi has lived up until now.
Somi is not at fault for the things that happened to her. The people who criticized her in IOI or pre-debut or in YG were purely based off her looks and superficial reasons, and not because she did anything wrong. Somi has faced a lot of pain and hurt deeply ingrained in her since she was an elementary kid in school for being half white and looking different. Everyone keeps sending mixed messages about her body, she is just trying to cope with that.
You can't fat shame her and then get mad when she loses the weight.

I'm always so sad when idols have to defend their every move to their fans. The fans aren't entitled to their lives, they get no say in what they eat, when they sleep, who they are friends with or who they date. They're not family, nor friends. They're fans. Exactly. I think it’s bad to comment on the idol’s weight obsessively since they’re already put under enough scrutiny. At the same time, it’s important for fans to acknowledge how warped the beauty standards are and the expectations idols have to live up to often times take drastic unhealthy measures. Just because the weight loss was obtained through working out, doesn’t mean it might not be a concern. Just because an idol is born with a thin body, doesn’t mean they have an ED. These distinctions are important to understand as well as the decency to not spam the idol’s pages with weight discussions. It just furthers this unhealthy obsession over body image.

Thank you for this comment. I was disappointed because this channel is usually pretty objective and good about identifying disordered behavior; but both the video and comments are seriously concerning. I think Somi is one of the most beautiful women in the industry, but she has a BMI of 16 (which we can verify, since she publicly posted it) and has started referring to her very normal-sized teenage self as "too big" and "chubby". Coupled with her history of starvation diets and unending pressure from every which way, it's shocking that people even try to assert this weight loss is healthy. Working out doesn't make someone healthy (excessive exercise is actually a component of both anorexia and orthorexia in many cases), and just because she's bubbly onstage and in interviews it doesn't mean her body is in good condition. And to everyone saying it's natural to be underweight, and not to skinny shame-it's not shaming to point out that being underweight carries a litany of health risks, many of which won't be seen for decades and by that point it is too late to undo the heart damage and osteoporosis. Also, there's a strong correlation with decreased immune function, so whether or not Somi has an eating disorder we can be 100% sure she is less healthy than she would be in a normal weight range which, for her height, starts at 122 pounds.

@@anewfuture9975 okay so there are a couple of things I want to make clear. 1: idk who that is and am not interested, but from a scientific pov you can't last very long without eating and still maintain muscle definition. Not that that person is lying or anything but muscles need protein & if you're consistently exercising then you'll need to eat to keep that muscle. 2: many people do think that she's starving herself to stay thin, but a more likely reality is that she just isnt overeating. Everyone has a natural weight that their body is most comfortable at. I was also her size once and when i gained the recommended weight i felt horrible & sluggish. So just because she looks too skinny to you doesn't mean she's not healthy. Many doctors have discredited that bmi chart anyway.

It doesn't take into account age, sex, & even different ethnicities, as BMI derives from research on White Europeans. She's an adult women who works out & has resources to optimize a routine specifically for her. She's also mixed race, so her different ancestry compared to Koreans can be a factor in fat distribution & how her body carries her overall weight. We do not know all the facts & just saying the BMI says it all is simply delusional. She's a grown woman & she seems confident in herself now. Plus, her openly discussing these body issues to the public says a lot about how she feels about people commenting on her body like this. If she says she's doing fine then we should believe her, unless something comes up that contradicts what she says.

I would like to add that a study from Harvard found that Asians are 2x likely to develop diabetes and heart-related diseases at the same bmi compared to any other race! BMI is inaccurate in general, but even more inaccurate for Asians. We Asians have a higher percentage fat and a smaller bone structure. Using the American BMI, I fall in the underweight category. But using the BMI for Asians, I fall in the top half of the “healthy” category. So yeah for us, there are more health benefits at being at a low weight than a higher one. As Somi is mixed, Her genetic composition is most likely different from an average white woman and Asian. As long someone is getting the right nutrients, not fatigued, functioning organs, not missing periods and healthy mentally, weight shouldn’t be a problem.

Somi's quite toxic with her comments on weight loss and her body, but I feel bad for her because it's likely a product of her environment. Still, defending why she posted her weight and saying that she doesn't mean to set a standard seems ignorant - even if it's not your intention to make others feel worse, you have a large influence over young, insecure girls who will feel worse because of your actions.

It’s not her problem, she posted her own weight because she herself was being criticised. You can’t hate on her for posting her weight because it’s not like she was publicly saying “you need to be my weight”.

While I do think she looks great and her exercise discipline is admirable, it’s hard not to think that her diet might be a little bit too restrictive still. A little bit of fat around the abdomen is perfectly normal and is actually there to protect your organs. Not having defined abs without flexing does not mean that you are fat or out of shape, that’s just what beauty culture tells people. There are legitimate health risks to being overly underweight including malnutrition, bone issues, immune function. I have issues with anemia at times and I can understand some concern (I’m not super thin, my BMI is at the lower end of normal)
That said criticizing her or blaming or for being a bad influence aint it. People who would attack someone for their weight probably aren’t genuinely concerned. Instead just send her messages that she’s loved and appreciated unconditional to her weight.

she can be proud alright, aesthetics and what you think looks good is very subjective after all, but acting like a BMI like hers doesn't come with a bunch of health problems, knowing it's not natural for her, is irresponsible.

Thanks for the video, this made me realize a lot. And I really really appreciate how happy she looks now. And even though I love birthday and got into the fandom that era, you can see in her vlogs how unsatisfied she was with herself so I'm looking forward to her comebacks and hope it stays as it is rn

someone in the comments below already mentioned, but her weight is not really considered healthy for her height--it is very much underweight. and it seems to me her body WANTS to be at a higher (and tbh healthier) weight, based on everything in this video. while she may eat enough (according to her), over-exercising is also a form of an eating disorder, and she stressed a few times how much she exercises. she clearly has struggled with her relationship with food and her body (not helped by the public obsessing over every pound!), so it's hard for me to believe this is a healthy state for her. her "heavy" weight was completely normal and she looked great, ESPECIALLY for a teenager who was still growing and whose body shape was changing anyway. this standard for idols is very dangerous and somi is not immune to that pressure--i hope health professionals are monitoring her and helping her! she is very gorgeous and absolutely killing it, so I just wish her the best and don't want to see her struggle continue.

she reminds me of the “that girl” aesthetic, you know, the trap of perfection and self-productivity. such people identify with the way they look, with the public demand they might want to satisfy, or with the compulsory success/result. :/

I actually care about Somi, I’m not jealous I’m worried. Y’all tried to make it seem like it’s a normal thing to be under weight. When someone thinks Somi is underweight you all are so quick to attack, being underweight is called underweight for a reason people. You guys make it worse trying to normalize it Ed’s. Some of you guys say “ok she she’s under weight but, then why can she still perform” or “her face looks healthy”. Someone who is famous and has an Ed and won’t show it, there’s a thing called makeup. Having an Ed won’t stop you from performing, unless you reach a certain point. You know how many ballerinas have Ed’s and still perform? I know what it’s like to perform even when you haven’t ate anything, I even would think it’s good that I can not eat and still perform. I’m not blaming Somi, she’s the victim here I’m blaming us and the company for trying to normalize this.

You are right tbh i have an Ed since i was 12 and now im 15 but i never showed to people i will just say i have eaten or im healthy
Im not saying somi has an Ed mabye she is eating well and exercising really hard but 46 kg for her height 1.72 its not normal and its underweight
Im not body shaming her cuz i know how it feels i just hope she is healthy and happy with her body

YES! as someone with an ED this shit pisses me off, THEY DONT UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLES! People try to normalize it because they don't understand the extent of ED's! It doesn't matter how healthy they look, being as underweight as she is isnt healthy at all! No matter how they try to twist it.

My 2 cents. Undoubtedly, being fit helps with voice and air control especially with Somi's type of voice and it paid off. Her performance at YHY Sketchbook proved it. It wasn't just her weight or appearance people were commenting about her in the last comeback, her voice and performance too, which both improved this time.

No kidding I was really looking forward to you videos, I've loved each comeback more than the last now and Dumb Dumb is my fav so far...then all Kpop news channels started going mad over her weight and I was like...dude, she looks so much stronger than the last comeback, she's even addressed the haters basically saying please back off. I fear since she's so young this constant hate will make her feel insecure and she look so happy and confident on stage! I sincerely hope she does not end like Ailee or Hani, and end up having a terrible time managing her image and weight and more importantly HER MENTAL HEALTH. People NEED to understand she's so young this dumpster fire of a situation might hurt her...

When I first saw this pretty girl, I admired so much of her good looks. She shines and stands out effortlessly. Very charming, pleasant and very pretty indeed. I didn't know she's been going through this much for her appearance. I never thought about a visually perfect girl being teary and insecure about her appearance. I thought she'd be secure, proud and glad every time she thinks about her looks.
I wouldn't have known how much she went through like this.

  • @roseroserrrr

Why are there people who defend this extreme change?
    Somi has a health problem.
She has been famous since she was little, her body is not naturally slim. Being so thin is not the usual thing, it is a demand (especially in Asia, not in some countries of America, for example)
Somi demonstrated for many years how she has an obsession with her weight, speaking of extreme and unhealthy diets. Raising and lowering her weight a lot, It was ATTRACTION (sorry Idk how said that in English specifically) There is no more obvious proof than that, but some people still say that she is fine.
Somi needs help, I hope she gets it. But there are stupid people who say things like it's because she's a woman, wtf sis, learn about eating disorders. Educate yourself.
And question the real culprits of that, the society (in this case Koreans) that forces a girl who has that weight and does that type of diet and even worse, to make herself see that it is okay to be a clear BAD EXAMPLE for other girls.
    Sorry for my bad English.

I feel like she is trying really hard for the fans because she wants to prove that she is worthy (weight wise) but never feels like she’s good enough and keeps going on a continuous loop of starving herself. I hope some fans could respect the fact she doesn’t have to be skinny to be pretty or be acknowledged or more loved bc her personality doesn’t change and she’s still remain as the bubbly lovable somi
