- SORRY Avalon King! Casey Putsch goes rogue with Avalon King Ceramic Coating sponsor funds like Casey Neistat did with Nike to build his dream supercar. Inspired by the original Bertone Lancia Stratos Zero concept, Casey is building a "what if" car that would represent if such a design went into production. When you were talking about visibility, the first thing i thought about was how easy that is to fix in this day. A wide view digital rear view mirror camera set up would totally work wonders if placed right.

love this. cant wait to see it start coming together. Being a woodworker by trade and a wrench head by gasoline addiction I keep looking at Model A frames and sheet metal and thinking about the Duesenberg concept IE keeping a chassis and front sheet metal and going wooden buck coach built body. Power plant would be a 2.3L turbo ford with a 5 speed based off the SVO mustang motor.
The Lancia Stratos Zero, Dodge M4S PPG,Vauxhall SRV, Maserati Boomerang, Buick Wildcat, Vector W2, Oldsmobile areotech, Dome zero, Alfa Romeo Carabo has always been my favorite car designs, posters of these cars are what littered my walls in my room.
I can't wait to see how your vision turns out.
The beauty of TH-cam is that there are videos of the amazing original concept driving around, the best being at the Villa d'Este 2018 concours event. It's a crazy car that's going to be a spectacular build.

My grandfather was a mechanical engineer for Cooper-Bessemer Energy Services. He worked on their gas compressor engines, and he used to keep blue prints in the buffet in his dining room. I used to love unrolling them and reading them.

Casey, I remembered the shape of the Zero was used in a Michael Jackson Movie called Moonwalker. I recognized the shape of that car immediately from the thumbnail! One of my favorite concept cars of all time.
It's my dream to be able to one day drive the actual vehicle--but unlikely given it's owned by a private collector here in LA.

Hell yeah! Excited to watch this come to life! Thought you were going to do a Mercedes C111 with a proper engine, but a Stratos Zero inspired build with a V12 and proper engineering of the chassis+suspension is going to be much better and sooo glorious!!

Looks like you're beginning an interesting journey! I built a LoCost from scratch a few years ago and it was a blast.
I believe hypercars are as much about engineering competition as they are about art, design, luxury, and who can afford them. Like you say, no one will ever drive one close to it's potential, and to be honest, will ever really be able to.
I like hypercars and supercars, but what the industry really needs are simpler cars, cars like the original Miata or '65 Mustang. Ones without touch screens, various superfluous sensors gadgets, nannys and features that may rarely be used over the life of the vehicle. Ones that are cheap to insure and cheap enough to own as a second car. But that's just me.

For the people who dont understand why he doesn't have more he is actually moving extremely fast builds like this usually take years even decades.

Yes! It’s a noble purpose and all I hoped for this build. As Marcello Gandini himself said “it was a sculpture on wheels, a rather pointless one” but now it will mean something more. I hope you get to see the beautiful interviews to Gandini and the other big designers and engineer of the time, you’ll find them on youtube with english subtitles on the channel Davide Cironi. This design with modern suspension, drivetrain, and materials, will be a real beastie. Don't forget to add some ground effects to help keep this thing on the road! GOOD LUCK 👍!
This is the coolest car project I've ever seen. Hats off if you coach build this ! One question, shouldn't be the board set up extremely precisely to get an accurate projection ? It does not seem vertical from the cameraman's angle. Just asking :)

This is going to be an insanely difficult project, but it's in the right hands. Looking forward to seeing it progress.
Just remember to pay attention to weight distribution - that was one of the biggest problems with the Stratos and earned them a reputation for the back end overtaking the front.
FYI they still do full scale 1:1 tape drawings in professional design studios. You’re suppose to use thin black flexible tape to get your lines.
One of my favorite Hot Wheels from when I was a kid in the 70s was a Lancia Stratos Zero, and I'm going to claim that I also had a bigger one from Dinky? (Hot Wheels was silver and Dinky was orange) Loved those!
After watching this video, I searched to find the actual concept car itself, and It's sweet!!! I know your build will be amazing, and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see what you do with the Replica Contash body you just bought for 5K. BTW, my car was a Candy Apple Red 67 Shelby GT350 4 speed. I bought it smashed up for 4,500 bucks back in the early 80's before I got married. I fixed all the crash damage myself with a Lincoln Mig welder my dad had.

This is great! The original Stratos concept is really radical! The Maserati Boomerang wouldve been nice as well. Like the sharp lines both Gandini and Giugiaro use. Real rivals actually having quite a comparable style.
And about the Miura the rivalry and even controversy started. Giugiaro left Bertone but was working on a mid engined design. He claims Gandini stole the idea for the Miura from Giugiaro concept sketches.

This is gonna be fun to watch unfold, certainly an amazing design that you couldn't make nowadays. I do like the Zero, but I favor the Alfa Romeo Carabo a bit more, don't know if you looked at any of those when you were researching the Zero. I may have a slight brand bias though...
Agree with you, though I might be a bit partial as well (33 Stradale base HELLOOOOOO!!!). Have you seen it, together with a couple other of its sisters, at the Museum in Arese? I've gone 3 times already since it has reopened a few years ago :D
But this build is going to be awesome, the Zero is still super cool, there's a video from 2 years ago from Villa d'Este where it features and crawls around under its own power. Love Lancias as well, have driven a Fulvia, it's wicked to hear that punchy little sound so raw with more open pipes. But a V12 in it is really going to do it justice, provided weight distribution, chassis rigidity and suspension geometry are tailored (I'm sure Casey&co will take it all into account).

Thats a neat concept car I have to admit its impressive. I think it can be even better give it gets a bit of a more modern spin on it. More fluid lines and a bit more complex surfaces can do the job
Casey, I dont know how to but I wish i could become a facsimile of you. Your publicly presented persona is everything I aspired to be growing up. i tried to do near this exact project but with my own designs in college as part of my thesis
There is another car that is considered the "sister" of the Lancia Zero, it is the Ferrari Modulo which shared a lot of the design cues of the other one, but if memory serves me right, it was actually based on the Ferrari 512S and/or 512M race car, as far as engine, chassis, and so on.
Jim Glickenhaus owns it and his team recently completed a total restoration on it. He drove it in Monaco last year and it caught fire around the exhaust area and had to be repaired. The Lancia Zero didn't suffer from the same issue, but it could've been because it was never driven as much as Jim drives his cars.
Maybe look into it, given your King Zero does share some design cues of its own with them. It would be hard to justify to Avalon King that you need more money because not only you didn't buy their products, but the money your spent on your project went up in flames with the car, quite literally.
Seriously my guy? literally about every car on the planet has exhaust and none of mine catch fire. That isn’t a design cue thing. It’s a who built it, restored it, or looked after it sort of thing.

Basically, whoever was contracted with designing and building the mufflers did a very poor job and the car caught fire because of that.
Welp, time to doodle out a few car drawings. I don't have anywhere near the money or skills to make it a reality, but I have had a car idea in my head for a while, sorta a cross between a Lotus 7, a Plymouth Prowler, and a Formula E Gen 2, and this video has inspired me to think about it a bit more.
So are you scaling it larger to fit the wheelbase of the Porsche chassis and have more room for the V12? Great project!

I'm excited for some actual metal shaping videos. I've been studying the trade (reading, watching videos, ect) for years now. I'm finally getting close to starting my first project. I'm scaling up in size the 1933 dodge brothers truck that I have. I'm going to be starting with headlight buckets. I just need to get argon for my new tig welder, and get all the metal tools I've accumulated in one place. Good luck and please share anything you learn that might help us out!

Great idea. Personally I would smooth the sides a bit to reduce the side troughs and thus reduce the drag. I have always loved the stratos since my father "borrowed" the one pirelli was using as a test car to pick me up from high school one day! the production stratos was one angry little go-cart with no manners or restraint. A bit like you Casey!

No car has ever cried out more to be re-engined than the Stratos Zero.
I was at the Turin Motor Museum for the 30th Anniversary of the Stratos. After the event, I was chosen to sit in the Zero and steer as it was pushed through the museum and out to its trailer for the ride back to Bertone. Chance of a lifetime! Well one of the foremost Stratos rally car collectors went one better. He was allowed to fire it up and drive the Zero around the lot. As it spluttered into life, the whole aura around this work of automotive art, shattered. It sounded...
Well, I've heard more tuneful tractors.
The Lancia v4 is a great engine. Having driven a rally-prepared Fulvia HF Fanelone from Central Europe to the UK, I should know. Its biggest problem in the Zero is that stumpy trumpet exhaust.
Even if that was rectified, a 4 cylinder is just too puny. But here's the rub. No matter how many pistons, I don't think any conventional internal combustion engine could do the Zero justice.
That shape is so out of this world that it needs an equally futuristic sounding propulsion system. If Dilithium Crystals aren't on the Genius Garage curriculum, then perhaps a gas turbine or -dare I say it- an electric motor (and a hookup with Rich Rebuilds?!)
Don't get me wrong, I'm a bonafide Petrolhead. But...

This video means a lot to me, because it talks about how cars were a way to express youself, how they were something to actually enjoy rarher than just looking at them. I have a big apreciation for the CCX because if im not wrong its the true last raw supercar, and its not as expensive as the other cars in its category, even if its still not exactly affordable. My realistic dream car is a caterham seven, small, relatively cheap, lightweight, and as fun as any motorbike, wich is my plan B, buyng a CBR600 RR. Thanks for making a video for people who understand that the good cars arent just expensive or fast, are thoose cars wich have a personality, and dont necesarily follow any standars, and they get made for those people who understand those cars. This is one of the reasons im angry towards the panamera, or the cayenne, or any other crappy utility car porsche made, those cars dont mean anything but i have money, id you have a porsche it probably means that you bought a car to be driven, to be heard, but overall, to truly enjoy.
You have to put a 12 into 1 exhaust in this thing. YOU HAVE TO!!
