  • In the 101 auditorium of the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française, Pierre Fournier plays Bach, Couperin, the C major Beethoven sonata with his son Jean Fonda, the Saint-Saëns concerto, and a Prokofiev march as an encore. Between performances, Fournier is interviewed by the musicologist Bernard Gavoty, and takes questions from the audience. André Girard conducts the Orchestre de chambre de l'ORTF.
Originally transmitted on 3 July 1969.
(Note the Saint-Saëns concerto and Beethoven Sonata are released on the EMI Classic Archive series)

When I was a teenager, my cello teacher who played with the Toronto symphony, arranged for me to meet and play for the cello soloists who performed with the orchestra. As a result I met and played for Janos Starker, Jacqueline Du Pre, who I befriended and corresponded with, and Pierre Fournier! He was so sweet and kind and inspiring. He invited me to come to Europe and said that in exchange for taking cello lessons with him, I could live at his place with his wife and child and do some babysitting for them in return! Shortly after that I received an invitation to study in Dusseldorf, Germany in the Masterclass of Antonio Janigro. I received a Canada Council Grant to help make that happen and so that is where I went. To this day I wish I had chosen to study with Mr. Fournier. He had such an elegant sound, flawless technique and warm and friendly personality! I have been very blessed in my lifetime.

Were you in the masterclass given by Starker in Toronto in the mid 80s? I went to see Rebecca Morton participate :)

Fournier would have been probably a great teacher and he seemed like such a great person. But Janigro was also a fantastic musician! And looking at his students, Brunello, Meneses, Demenga, Berger, Dindo, Sollima, who are all world class cellists(!), I couldn't imagine him being a bad teacher. I envy you for being his student. :)

I was lucky to meet Selma Gokcen at ECU, she studied extensively with Fourier. She was very knowledgeable and always commented that Pierre was a perfectionist and his technique stood out amongst others as refined and virtuosic. This video quite proves it to me, if it ever required proving. Thank you, Pierre! R.I.P.

With good reason, Pierre Fournier was one of my idols. His command of the cello is marvelous. I'm so glad to see him again on film.

I knew Pierre Fournier in 1965. Un grand musicician. Always with a glove on his left hand before a concert. Never forget him.

Some young cellists ought to learn from Maestro Fournier the economy of gestures and movements before the public. What a great cellist!

By far, of the six versions of the Bach cello suites that I have heard -- Casals, Starker, Rostropovich, Navarra, Tortelier, and Fournier -- the Fournier's is in my opinion the most "Bachian", the zen of Bach. The Prelude part of this video makes me tear up, tears "sine ira et studio" indeed.

Each one his own style/sound etc. I came to discover very recently Enrico Dindo and was very impressed by "his" Bach suites". You should "try".
Rohmann Ditta has a good hand too - but baroque !!

I confess I haven't heard that many, but my favourite is that of Maurice Gendron, 1964 on Philips Classics; the entire thing is here on TH-cam. I found that amongst dad's CDs when he died 2001. But the reason I have found Fournier on TH-cam is that amongst the old vinyl I have from dad & mom was an old Fournier ... in fact, TH-cam suggested it to me, and I am pretty sure I never posted about him, so it's very strange it should be promoted to me. I have yet to hear more than the opening tidbit of Suite No. 1 played by Fournier, and I am sure he is also very good.

    O Pierre Fournier..

That tone and elegance, far superior than any other cellist. He has to be the king of poise even to this day. Though at times I wanted him to loose some of the refined quality.

Now I see his unusual bowing on no1 Prelude. His Bach cello suite music sheet was most selling in the 80s yet no one was following his bowing as most people couldn’t figure out why so.

Je pardonne à Bernard Gavoty (alias Clarendon) son français très "snob", mais pas le fait de confondre une Sarabande avec un Prélude de Bach.
