I been running Volvo's for last 20 years. From my experience Volvo had some difficulties in parts availability in the past. I have not been having any problems with parts and as far as service if you have good relationship with couple shops you not going to have issues there. Problems start when you just drop your truck at a random dealer and expect great service.
@alexpit6946 Thanks for the feedback. I really don't know much about Volvo. I'm just going off of things people have told me. I am very fortunate to do 99.9 of all my own maintenance, I've been told its not finding a good shop, it's that they don't have the parts in stock.
I have a 2017 Volvo 670, 6x2 with lift axle, getting 8.7 mpg at 65 mph. Have gone one year without a single break down. Emissions and engine is strong very happy with my Volvo, 600 k miles just changed the coolant tank. I get my parts from other wrecked Volvos because the shops never have the part I want. gears 2.55 d13 I shift
That's great! I'm glad you are having good luck with it. Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any experience with them, and I didn't want to risk my own money.
I had did I say had a 2018 volvo 670. That thing was a bummer to get fixed and the parts are never in stock and they are pricey. Went back to a 02 western star with a series 60. No emissions fights or impossible to find parts.
I just realized who you are. You pull containers in Ohio, right? I remember you talking about it on the radio. I kind of got pumped up about Volvo hearing about them all the time, but the more I thought about it, I decided to stick with what I knew. Waiting on parts seems to be what Volvo is known for. Thanks for the feedback on your truck.
@ the volvo is Christine Jr and the now western star is Snowman 1. If you want to check them out. The vovlo was the Xe package 500/1700 ishift 12 overdive and 2.64 rear. Smowman is 12.7 series 60. 2002 so it has none of the emissions bullshit with a eaton 10 manual so .73 final and a 3.70 rear gear. I haven’t hooked it up to the laptop yet so not sure the hp. My guess the way it drives 470 like alot of them came out back then. Interesting to look at the 2 not enough difference to matter tons.
It sounds like you have a good solid truck. Those pre emissions trucks are hard to find unless they are complete junk. I want to get a laptop for my truck. Do you use diagnostic link from Freightliner?
When a Volvo is operating properly, it is by far a superior machine. However, when that thing breaks, you might as well take a vacation because it will take forever to get parts and forever to get repaired and you might as well take out a loan because it’s going to take all your money away.
That's what I'm getting at. It looks like they make a great product, and all the innovations are really cool, but for a one truck owner-operator, that is depending on his truck to stay running down the road the Volvo scares me. I appreciate the feedback!
@ exactly! If if you have a fleet of 100 of these things and one or two or in the shop, it’s not the end of the world. Before you and I if our truck is in the shop for two, three, or four weeks, we are totally screwed
As far as efficiency up to 2018 Freightliner was more efficient. Things on efficiency side got a lot better after 2018 when Volvo went to common rail fuel system and turbo compound set up. I think today properly specced Volvo is on par with Freightliner on efficiency.
@alexpit6946 Okay. That makes sense. I like the look of Volvo trucks and the way they are building power train. I'm going off of my own experience and what I've heard. I'm glad you are having good luck with yours. Thanks for watching!
First Volvo I drove was an 04 VNL day cab with an ISX set at 525 hp and an 18 speed. I hauled a dump trailer with that running dirt and demo out of NYC out to Long Island. I had just come out of a 379 day cab. The room and comfort was great and the truck ran great with a few wear item issues understandable running at 120,000 pounds. Then we got a VHD with the 465 D12 and it was a dog but in fairness engine never gave any trouble. That lad bought more over the years and his biggest complaint is getting work done. Emissions were a major issue but understandable running a severe duty cycle. Most shops can work on Cummins, Detroit etc but Volvo has a captive customer and you are at their mercy. That same guy has cut back to 2 trucks now both Volvo but is seriously looking at a 2020 T800 Kenworth with the X15 and an 18 speed for his next lowboy tractor as he is sick of dropping a truck off and then waiting to the point he has to hire someone else to move his equipment usually with a KW or a Pete and a Cummins. I like the Freightliner myself and parts are reasonably priced and for the most part I can do most of the work I need done even though I am by no means a mechanic but with TH-cam and the internet and just a normal tool chest with no fancy tools you can keep these trucks running well. Biggest complaint with Freightliner is the wiring and how they squeeze everything together with zip ties after bundling up the excess of the loom .
It sounds like everyone pretty much has the same story. As far as the build quality of the truck and comfort, I think the Volvo wins hands down. And I really enjoy listening to all the cool things they are doing with gearing. For a one truck guy that is buying from the used market, I think Freightliner is way to go. Again, I haven't driven one, so that's why I wanted some feedback from you guys that have. Thanks for the feedback. Keep up the good fight out here!
@ I looked at a few Volvo’s before buying this Cascadia and I called a few shops about invented problems with engine and emissions for quotes and times and with the Volvo it was telephone numbers for prices and the Shaker it was a quote with a reasonable time in shop . Again I like the Volvo but just afraid of being at the mercy of a dealership. Near me I have a whole bunch of independent shops and 2 Detroit shops within 40 miles. I hope I never have to go there but good for parts etc and asking questions.

@ no I am a remote tuner for PP so I use that laptop and have then tell me what is wrong.
I got ya.
