I had this exact same realization. I was so multiplayer-game-brained. This year I set out on a goal of completing 50 games, and I accomplished that goal last week. I typically never rolled credits apart from a few franchises, but it’s kinda become my new favorite thing. I was able to experience some really stellar games I never would have before if I didn’t commit to the goal 😄 Enjoy the ride, DM!
OMG play BG3 dude, that would be amazingggg (I'm less than 2 minutes in lol). Edit: grew up in a religious commune man, I totally am there with you. I did EXACTLY what you did, too. There's no fomo and there is more variety outside of a constant hamster wheel grinding of a Live service and MMOs. I'm an ex FFXI, WoW and Destiny player, while i had fun...the game loop finally got old.
This was me after 2010 too, after basically 12 years of non-stop MMOs. I really had a backlog of single-player games after that. As a side note, my father was a Lutheran pastor, and when I played Diablo 1 and 2 at home, he asked me what this kind of game was. I told him that you are literally killing demons and devils in this game, and he acknowledged it. I mean, he never really was into this symbolism at all or injecting morals into a hobby like playing video games, which was still considered a nerdy and wasteful thing back then. You're certainly not the only person who has spent a lot of time on a single game, or single genre. Glad to hear you're enjoying your single player experience.
I was on the same boat a few years ago. My recommendations would be: Cyberpunk Witcher 3 Final Fantasy (all of it) Mass effect 1-3 Dragon age origins Assassins creed 1-4 Portal 1-2 Morrowind Skyrim Probably BG3 but I haven't played it yet
Yes, you are absolutely correct! DM, just try Mass Effect, and yoko is correct, you can safely start with number 2. This is my favorite game series, and I have never felt so attached to game characters or the story the way I was with this game. Storytelling along with excellent Gears style combat, just awesome.

DM, my favourite single player CRPG of all time is still Betrayal at Krondor. It was the 1994 RPG of the Year. Immersive story-line and amazing soundtrack. Very cool turn-based combat interface for its time. You can get it from GOG or Steam for a few $. The 5-game Quest For Glory series (1989-1998) is also lots of fun (my favourite is QFG II: Trial By Fire). Leaning more to the adventure game side, QFG does allow you to choose one of 3 character classes (fighter, magic user, thief), train/level them up throughout the game and import your character into the next game in the series. Since you mentioned Dragon Age, the best DA game, IMO, is the first one - Dragon Age Origins. If you haven't played that yet, it's well-worth your time investment.
Im 47 yrs old .. Diablo is pissing me off. These developers are basically giving the finger to us old school gamers.. It took me 1,100 hrs to get my first Mythic drop last night....All while group players are posting crazy mythic drop videos. Bottom line here is at a paragon level 252, I should be able to complete a LOT more than i can because I choose not to always have to find some group to play with...Oh well...Like anything I say matters about it..😂😂
I found 3 mythics in first week of season solo. I didn't farm bosses after that and spent two weeks mastercrafting. Quit after over 400 million and not getting 1 piece with the desired Mastercraft. Had 4 star Yen boots, too :(
What bothers me is your time investment is meant to be thrown away with seasonal resets, even if you play eternal your items aren't upgraded with updates, they are made redundant.. It's just grinding for nothing.
Mythics should have stayed as rare as they were at launch. Nothing mythical about an item you can get at some point no matter what. This is exactly why you ought not constantly cater to the players and the customer is not always right. "Give us more D2 they screamed" then when everyone realized the drop rate of godly items the complaining commenced immediately.
There's just something I love about single player. There's no forever power creep and non stop lore expansion. I see games here being recommended are kinda new. If you travel back in time a little, you will have even more diversified plot. I would recommend: Silent hill series Okami Metal gear solid 3 Final fantasy 7 to 10 Tales of series Siren .hack And there is still a ton that are more about gameplay
So many great games out there. Wait until you get into strategy games: RTS, Grand Strategy, and 4X. Or visit some popular titles in their niches like Dishonored and Deus Ex series. Wasteland 3. Enshrouded is newer but solid. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a must play. AC Unity is also very fun imo. Dragon Age: Origins. Bioshock. Upcoming titles I’m anticipating are Clair Obscur 33 and Eriksholm
It came to a surprise to find out modders have been added hundreds of hours to my favorite old single player games and I'm now playing them, like good old Half-life or hl2 (which is free right now until 18th btw go get it) but the point being, too many multiplayer slop it is time to return to the roots of singleplayers
I have exactly 20 more year me then you. You said something about living through the golden erra, but that erra was truly the 80's and even early 90's. Sure, the games look like absolute garbage today. But that first time we played asteroids in the grocery store in the 80's was shocking, exponentially better then say how one would feel with the release of any game today (saturated market / just taking well know ideas already out there). The first time we loaded into a BBS on a 1400 baud modem and played an actual game online with other people was shocking and amazing. The first time I used the internet in 1991 on a unix server in my colleges basement using gopher to connect to colleges around the country... shocking. Wow, the first time I logged into the beta of Ultima Online... holy... nothing like it ever existed and it was absolutely fun (again, remember what we had the time), nothing that has released as an MMO since that day has even come close in comparison.
yeah i was around then as well, but it wasn't because those games were amazing, they were really not at all, it was just because it was new , never been done before stuff. Amazing for its time but lots of those games dont really hold up today. There are afew that do ofc, astroid, pac man , duck hunt, tetris but most dont.
I am replaying witcher 3 for the 4th time with modpack to pass time before poe 2, such a great rpg. Every other year or so I replay some of my favourite games, usually with some great new mods to keep it fresh.
Alan Wake 1, The Outer Worlds, Fallout New Vegas, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, The Witcher 3, Assassins Creed 1-3, Brotherhood, and Revelations. I’m truly grateful for all my time spent enjoying these pieces of art.
I feel the same exact way, I played YEARS of WoW and RuneScape, both retail and private servers. But now I have an ENORMOUS unfinished or unstarted back log. I’m considering getting dice just to roll to pick because of how many choices there are of quality games that were missed.
I think there is also a live service, FOMO, online only fatigue that is affecting older video gamers. The newer live service games coming out from AAA are not grabbing players and the constant shop items in your face and battlepass chase has become exhausting (because so many games do it now). I have seen this growing trend of players playing the live service less and adding more single player games to their playtime.
I see this as an absolute win. Means if there's ever a dry patch in gaming, you'll be drinking from a fire hose while everyone else is watching the tumbleweeds roll.
I prefer single player games. I often don’t have long stretches or uninterrupted time, so being able to pause it however long I need to is great. No lost progression or being teleported back to a town or something. About a third of my hours played on games are from being paused or idling on a menu.
I've been chasing the high of 2005 Maple Story (my first ever MMO) for almost two decades now and the closest MMO that gives me that feeling is FF14; which is why I have been playing it on and off for about 8 years now. Honestly though I will never truly get that feeling again because that was a completely different time back then. Part of what made Maple Story so great at the time was the absolute spirit crushing grind that the game was known for. That old-school level of MMO development can't exist anymore for many reasons but mainly because it would flop within the first 6 months of release. When I look back it was such a magical experience, grinding away for days at a time just to fill half of the EXP bar. But the community around that game was so special because of it. You could actually make friends (and enemies, KS WARS were serious business) and actually interact and chat with people around the world; sharing in each others suffering with trying to level up. At least I'll carry those happy memories until I am dust so it isn't all bad.
Dude , this is the first channel of yours that i found (with d4 release) and ever since you are turning into my favourite youtuber ❤ keep up the work man i love your humility
I am playing D2 for more than 20 years on Bnet,i accomplished everything possible on this game and at some point of course i got bored of it.Even when D2R came out of course i started playing it but i was always feeling that even though i love this game so much there is nothing left for me to do here.Until i bought a Nintendo Switch, purchased D2R and i started a single player campaign,it was and still is such a blast. This first campaign with my Paladin brought back the feeling i had when i was playing this game 20 years ago.I believe single player games are way underrated.
Glad you are getting around to playing some of my favorite games. It's a shame you missed out on them, but the great thing is that you can still play them and they are still great.
You didn’t miss out on them, you saved them for the perfect moment, right now. You’re blessed. Witcher 3 is absolutely one of the best out there. So is RDR2, Cyberpunk, Elden Ring, Dark Souls 3, The Last of Us part 1 and 2. You just have to play these games. They’re SO good. S tier games.
single player games have always been my books. They can be so immersive and thought provoking, and rpgs like the ones youve played (cyberpunk and witcher 3) feel like reading an amazing novel but you get to stop at any point and just look around the world and dig as deep as you want to. Glad you're having so much fun!
I’m 42 and always played multiplayer games with other players from initially FPS games and MMOs. I realised I actually hate playing with other people, so prefer more solo games now. Having a blast not dealing with toxic and incompetent players. Feel much more relaxed as a gamer
Baldurs Gate 3 will blow your mind dude. You get to scratch the itch of playing with different builds and choose where the story takes you. It’s one of my favorite games of all time.
Playing the Entire God of War Series would be fantastic. You get to see the crazy over-the-top progression of the Cinematic Pantheon battle genre, to the amazing story driven father-son masterpiece. Just do it!
Single-player hits different. You take moments at your own pace. You get to sit there in reflection of something amazing and marvel at the skills of a team of developers.
I went through the same thing ~10 years ago. I spent so much time in everquest and dark age of camelot, ultima online, I kept trying to find mmo experiences like the first ones I had. What's even better is now these great games we missed out on are cheap, pretty much bug free, with a good chance of mods too.

It's like my niece's, I'm really jealous because they are now going through all the classic TV shows and don't have to wait years to watch the entire series.
Final Fantasy 8's minigame Triple Triad (another card game) was so good it made it into FF14. also try: Uncharted 4 (or the entire series), Ghosts of Tsushima, God of War & God of War Ragnarok (or all of them really), and Final Fantasy 7 8 9 10 12 7Remake 7Rebirth
I'm 54 years old and have been playing ever since the Amstrad 48k and the Commodore 64. And still going strong. However, our stories are completely opposite, in that I have next to never played a multiplayer game. There HAVE been exceptions, but I cam probably count them on my two hands. But now I'm ever so slowly starting to realize that there is something called MMOs out there... LOL I guess what started it all was Genshin Impact. I know for a fact that I will be a gamer until the day I die, and I'm curious to see which path I'll take from here. Because there are several. Eureka. Great channel btw! Greetings from Norway 😉
As someone who grew up with gaming in a way that's almost the polar opposite, understand that I have had these feelings as well. I've played a little of a lot of games, but never focused too hard on one title and never played any MMOs until a few years ago (I'm 36). When I hear people talk about their experiences with WoW or other similar titles, I often wish that I had been there. Going back and playing through some of the classic zones in WoW retail on my own was actually pretty depressing, both because the world was essentially empty, but also because it was a constant reminder of what I had missed. I enjoyed my relatively short time with FFXIV because it really feels mostly like a single player game with some group content sprinkled in, but because I didn't have anyone to play it with at the time, the game didn't hold onto me for too long. PoE is pretty much the only live service game I play or have ever played and given that I actually play games these days to escape social interaction (not in a bad way, it's just my way to wind down and catch a break from people), that probably won't change anytime soon. If only we had more time, all of us could enjoy everything gaming has to offer.
the beauty of games is if you look there's always one or two that you've missed, but you've also deep dived a ton of games, ( Runescape inparticular), which is a different beast than just playing. Happy your still finding joy in old and new titles
By playing these games on stream with your chat, you're getting the benefits of a single player game with the social interaction aspect you want from MMOs. It's the best of both worlds for you for sure.
First Asmongold, now you. It's making me so happy that more and more gamers are finally waking up to the fact that they've fallen victim to predatory business practices and trash-tier online service games from the last decade up until now. Late 1990s and the 2000s truly were the golden age of gaming. There are so many genre-defining games from that era. Enjoy the journey!
My top games since 2000 (in order that I would want to watch on stream): Dead Cells Hallow Knight Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps (sequel) Transistor Skyrim Heroes of Might and Magic III Slay the Spire Vampire Survivors
I'm 48, played single player games since I was about 8yo with an Atari. Only got into online seasonal games since I started playing Sea of Thieves about 3 years ago, now Diablo 4. I find these multiplayer, progression games more like a lifestyle choice where I'm always trying to grind the next thing. Single player games on the other hand feel more personal and deeper, like a good book that stay's with you.
I play all sorts of games, and each of them have a place in my heart. I still remember my first Bioshock run as a kid and being absolutely mind-blown by its twist. I do find some people tend to limit themselves by the genres they start own, which is a shame. There's an incredible amount of fun games to play.
Physically I hate aging, mentally I'm slowly coming to terms with it. By no means I'm old, only 28 but I ain't to active lol. But I was mmo/pvp/fps player but as I get older and enjoy being truly alone, single player games hit so much better
If Elden Ring is really your favorite single player game, you deserve to check out the full catalog of Fromsoft soul's game. Elden Ring is the culmination of all these games, but each one really stands on it's own. Seriously, Demon's Souls Remake, Dark Souls 1-3, and Bloodborne are all MUST PLAYS!
Both Pillars of Eternity, Days Gone, Oxygen Not Included, All 3 Baldur's Gates and Prey just to name a few single player bangers Edit- yes, all three Mass Effects lol
Can we get audio on the Cyberpunk vods? 😢 MP games are great, especially with friends. I would never give up SP games though, especially when your socially drained or just want to chill by yourself. Theres nothing like sitting and putting a hundred hours into an amazing SP rpg with great storyline and loveable characters with some sweet gameplay.
I had this moment back when Far Cry 3 released. I played WoW and other MMOs exclusively. Far Cry 3 and Black Flag, plus getting my first really beefy rig changed my gaming taste. P.s. DA:V is not a bad game at all. Its a shame people are letting the internet keep them away from a very solid game.
Knowing is half the battle and it's never too late to learn. Games series like the Witcher and Red Dead just highlight how tedious the MMO and ARPG genres are once the FoMO factor is removed.
The Uncharted Games, Last of Us Pt1&2, Red Dead 1&2, the two recent God of War Reboots, Mafia 1&2, Ghost of Tsushima. Just to name a few that are really damn good.
rdr2, witcher 3 and cyberpunk are games that i play once a year as my comfort games… 200hrs full playtroughs of each of these games are always worth it.
LOL you know he’s serious about only playing online games or mmos when the metaphor he went with for getting good suggestions in his chat is “loot filter” 😂

I find it's nice to play blind your own way... Little sick of online min/Max attitudes and spoilers.

Just means you have a 20 year backlog of great games to play now!
About a year ago I dusted off my PS3, bought a PS4, and then put together a collection of about 100 games each that I'd never played and would love to play. I've gone through about 30 or so at this point, and I'm having a blast, and still have games for years to come.
which is great news, bc despite some gems coming out now the sort of median AAA video game experience is hitting some creative lows in recent years.
but some games were great for THEIR time.
Single player games tend to be far more immersive than MMO's and ARPG's.
I would suggest Mass Effect 1-3.
Mass Effect series is glorious... it exceeded my every expectation.
AND ME: A = MY fav out of the ME games. Only with latest patch though.
Male Shepard always no matter which ME game. Voice actors are so much better!!!!!!!!
Not really. They are more immersive than esports type games. Nothing is more immersive than an mmo
Came to say just this! Mass Effect 2 was so good
I loved Mass Effect, and the story interactions between the characters were great, too.

Diablo was better as a single player offline game as well. Hmmm
no it wasn't. not for me anyways. Trading is one of my fav things though
I played D2 for years on battlenet, in password protected games, alone.
played D1 on LAN with a friend. good times
For the first 20 years of playing D2, it wasn't for me. It wasn't until D2R that single player was superior to me.

Morrowind
Skyrim
Probably BG3 but I haven't played it yet
Mass Effect trilogy. Play it. If you can't get past the way ME1 plays, do not skip the rest. Just start with 2. You won't be disappointed

You need to play Half Life 2 if you haven't!
Or you wait for the RTX Remix mod for a more modernized version.
I share the same sentiment.
Hey bro we have room in our clan and I’m 44 most of us are a bit older you’re welcome to join us. We are good group and help each other out
Mythics should have stayed as rare as they were at launch. Nothing mythical about an item you can get at some point no matter what. This is exactly why you ought not constantly cater to the players and the customer is not always right. "Give us more D2 they screamed" then when everyone realized the drop rate of godly items the complaining commenced immediately.
I can't think of a better game than the Witcher 3. Just wait until you get to the Blood and wine DLC. Its absolutely Peak gaming.
I finished Witcher 3 but never started Blood and Wine.. whats so good about it?
@jamesg871 The base game is beautiful but the DLC map is next level beautiful. It's hard to explain you just gotta experience it
@@jamesg871 No lie, it's better than the base game.
There's just something I love about single player. There's no forever power creep and non stop lore expansion.
I see games here being recommended are kinda new.
If you travel back in time a little, you will have even more diversified plot.
I would recommend:
Silent hill series
Okami
Metal gear solid 3
Final fantasy 7 to 10
Tales of series
Siren
.hack
And there is still a ton that are more about gameplay
So many great games out there. Wait until you get into strategy games: RTS, Grand Strategy, and 4X.
Or visit some popular titles in their niches like Dishonored and Deus Ex series. Wasteland 3. Enshrouded is newer but solid. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a must play. AC Unity is also very fun imo. Dragon Age: Origins. Bioshock.
Upcoming titles I’m anticipating are Clair Obscur 33 and Eriksholm
How could I forget Kingdom Come Deliverance wtf
Bro, this is like the 3rd or 4th video you've made with this similar title. You're running out of mistakes, pretty soon you just get fed to a moose.
i've been known to make some mistakes
Man you really need to play the whole Final Fantasy series they’re such great games well most of them are great
The 20 year mistake of dodging haircuts
Just do it!
i had the same moment, but in 2012.
I remember playing some Quake 3 Arena online on Christmas Eve one year and my Dad was like "really, on Christmas Eve?" Dude, it's a game. Chill.
“I made a huge mistake: I had friends”
Damn, this must be the firstest of first world problems
Single-player hits different. You take moments at your own pace. You get to sit there in reflection of something amazing and marvel at the skills of a team of developers.
I went through the same thing ~10 years ago. I spent so much time in everquest and dark age of camelot, ultima online, I kept trying to find mmo experiences like the first ones I had. What's even better is now these great games we missed out on are cheap, pretty much bug free, with a good chance of mods too.

It's like my niece's, I'm really jealous because they are now going through all the classic TV shows and don't have to wait years to watch the entire series.
having a gamer dad sounds pretty poggers
Brother is seeing the light and I am so glad for him. I'd love to play through these games for the first time again. Much love from France ❤
Homie broke the MMO and live service Sockholm Syndrome, and realized some games actually do respect your time and want to give you something fun.
Please play Skyrim if you haven’t because it’s a gem
You should play Ghost of Tsushima
First Asmongold, now you. It's making me so happy that more and more gamers are finally waking up to the fact that they've fallen victim to predatory business practices and trash-tier online service games from the last decade up until now. Late 1990s and the 2000s truly were the golden age of gaming. There are so many genre-defining games from that era. Enjoy the journey!
Here here! I was getting so worried about these guys being locked compulsively into MMOs.
My top games since 2000 (in order that I would want to watch on stream):
Dead Cells
Hallow Knight
Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps (sequel)
Transistor
Skyrim
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Slay the Spire
Vampire Survivors
I would give almost anything to forget everything I learned about elden ring and run through it blind again.
Yep the witcher 3 is the best game I’ve ever played.
Fuck yes. Along with games like ME, HL2 and RDR2
Its just the best
Welcome to the single player game club. It's awesome here
Witcher 3 is one of those games that stays with you forever. It pops into my head multiple times a day for no reason at all. It's incredible.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ~ 8 hours long. Parasite Eve ~20 hours long. Both are PS1 games.
Oh my lord, he never played Red Dead 2 ... Please don't tell me he never played GTA5
I remember playing GTA5, taking turns on my friend's copy, and thinking this is the best game ever made
@@thruntroll2983 Agree, I mean in many ways, its still the best game in my books
You gotta do a Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 campaign playthroughs, thats some absolute bangers!
Both Pillars of Eternity, Days Gone, Oxygen Not Included, All 3 Baldur's Gates and Prey just to name a few single player bangers
Edit- yes, all three Mass Effects lol
Another bonus of the back catalog is that it runs on older hardware just fine too
Can we get audio on the Cyberpunk vods? 😢
MP games are great, especially with friends. I would never give up SP games though, especially when your socially drained or just want to chill by yourself. Theres nothing like sitting and putting a hundred hours into an amazing SP rpg with great storyline and loveable characters with some sweet gameplay.
Welcome to the land of story and immersion my man
I've got a golden ticket....I've got a GOATED single player experience in my handdddddd!
Enjoy it DM! I'm kinda jealous in a way lol.
Mate, beware. Skyrim never ends.
LOL you know he’s serious about only playing online games or mmos when the metaphor he went with for getting good suggestions in his chat is “loot filter” 😂
So happy for ya. Can’t wait for you to find rouglikes
Games to try
Shining Force 1 & 2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Warhammer 40k: Dawn Of War 1
Horizon Zero Dawn
Fallout 4
Dead Space
Resident Evil 2
this cracked me up XD
no d2, no dune / doom and no TV and you say "not that religious" XD
on the other hand, you can continue the streak by getting addicted to brighter shores
