I have met quite a few fooball players & managers over my working years, even though I know very little about the game. It didn't seem to matter in the least. In fact, I think he may have found it mildly refreshing that I couldn't converse on the subject. Nevertheless, Jack was among the best of people you could ever wish to meet: A large imposing figure, he was always friendly and affable; he had time for everyone and anyone who wanted to stop and chat. He was 'castaway' by Sue Lawley on Desert Island Discs in 1996. The BBC podcast (available now) is well worth a listen!
I almost expected to see Jack coaching those kids as well - he probably did off camera! Football will be poorer for his passing. May one of the game's great characters forever rest in peace.

Me da used to see him at Newcastle airport and usually chatted with him and his wife (if they were there at the same time) me da says he's the most down to earth and lovely bloke!!
