As a 12 yrs old that's planning to do agriculture in college, I wanna say thank you for making this video, also this video helped me know how to sow pitcher plant seeds and il give this a shot if my mom agrees to my request of buying pitcher plants seeds haha. Thank you again have a joyous day!
I taught my 9 year old to grow morning glory vining flower from seed. They are extremely easy to grow and they are pretty cool If you properly maintain them. One time I sprouted one in my fiddle leaf fig container and let it wrap around the stalk, it yielded around 10 flowers (deep purple) or so and looked pretty cool indoors.
You set the pots in water, and avoid misting too much or too aggressively as it can move the seeds around. We leave them in bags until the seedlings are germinated or we dome them
I live on the equator (Singapore) so it's always hot and humid all year round. I'm wondering if your growing instructions are all applicable to my location?
Thanks Damon. Another "pro tip", if your plant label is too smooth to write on with a pencil just rough it up with some fine sandpaper a little bit first!
One side of our labels is smooth and the other is rough and we all have different methods for figuring out which one is the rough side! It’s just so much more satisfying to write on the rough side!
I planted some venus fly trap seeds last year. They germinated. And thier close to a year old like half an inch tall. When can I start separating them so thier not all bunched up?
We use diluted Maxsea fertilizer on most plants and Schultz cactus fertilizer on Pinguicula and Roridula. We also use osmocote slow release fertilizer pellets inside the pitchers of pitcher plants
@@California_Carnivores Thanks I just received my first temperate pitcher from your store today, they're beautiful, just want to make sure I get it right ✅
For the temperate plants we harvest our seed in late summer/early fall so it will be super fresh then. We harvest the tropical seed, like Nepenthes, all year round. But since Nepenthes seeds need to be fresh, we don’t sell large quantities for too long, so we insure you’ll have the best germination rate.
I LOVE the cat lol. how big should you let the plants get before starting to use the maxsea? Also when you say sprinkle the maxsea on them, is it okay to mix it up and use a spray bottle to just spray all over the whole pot of baby plants? Should it be more on the plants or on the soil? I just got maxsea and before I use it for the first time I just wanna make sure I’m doing everything correctly so I don’t hurt the plants
We mix it up in a spray bottle and mist the plants! We just mist everything; plants and soil. Check out the latest video update we did on our Venus flytrap seedlings - that will give you a good idea of the sizing of the plants. We are applying Maxsea to them.
We use Maxsea 16-16-16 heavily diluted on most carnivorous plants and Schultz cactus fertilizer on our Pinguicula. Check out the FAQ section of our website for all of our fertilizer recommendations!
I have finally been able to grow a Venus flytrap from a seed to an adult flowering plant in one year. 80 percent of my seeds now flower in 2 years but I finally got one after 30 years to grow from a seed to an adult flowering plant in one year.
Just planted seeds for the first time ever. Do you only do a mist of a splash of hydrogen peroxide and water once? Or should it be applied every so many days
You can for many carnivorous plants. We prefer a mix of peat moss and perlite for many of the temperate plants but lots of people successfully grow them in long fibered sphagnum
9.5 Inch Self Watering Planter Pot, Plastic Self Watering Flare Flower Pot with Water Reservoir, Deep Planter Pot Container for Garden Indoor Plants Home Decoration, Brown are these good for venus fly trap?
Awesome video, great advice! Thanks so much! I recently harvested temperate drosera intermedia seeds. Some I sowed immediately, but most of them are stored in my fridge until I decide to stratify them. However, the seeds are a pale white color instead of black (super tiny, too), and I'm worried they might be premature and/or not viable. Any idea if this seed color is normal for intermedia, or if they should still grow after stratification?
A T5 fixture and just traditional grow bulbs ? Also, I have a separate fridge I keep taxidermy items and be entire setting is at a crisp level. Bottom shelf like you would keep veges without freezing?
A standard T5 and regular bulbs from the hardware store work a treat for growing plants. There are LED alternatives as well so checkout the Yescom square paneled light on Amazon. Bottom shelf of the fridge works well!
@@California_Carnivores Hello sir, can you use that mix to top water the plants? because in our country (tropical climate) it's already rainy season that's why I stop putting my plants in water trays.
Sir I’d like to thank you for answering my many questions that I’ve been looking into as a new carnivore planter. May I kindly ask for your assistance with my terrarium? I have a sealed off terrarium and I was wondering if that’s a bad idea, I have springtails on the way to take care of any mold. Do I need an air pump to shove some fresh air along with a humidifier? Thank you kindly.
I second the assertion that “permanent” markers are not permanent outdoors. I made a lot of plant labels with a “permanent” Sharpie, and the ink had disappeared after less than a year in the sun and rain. Then I bought a more expensive, “super” marker advertised as resistant to fading from UV light. That did a little better, but the ink still disappeared in time. Don’t be fooled by that word “permanent” on the label.
Hi. First time sowing seeds, always bought the plants! I have some byblis and sundews, they are 14 inch away from my growlights. How long do you think i shall turn it on? Thanks!
We usually use a 12 hour day length but you’ll have to watch your plants and adjust it as needed. Grow lights are so variable now that they can be stronger or weaker than the ones we use. So keep an eye on your plants for photoperiod adjustment 😊
Cape sundews are really easy, just sprinkle them on a peat moss mix, keep moist and they’ll germinate really fast! Lots of the tropicals are similar. We’ll do more videos about seeds but there are just so many types of sundews 🤣
@@California_Carnivores Once I plant them and they go outside in January for growing outside for stratification, do they need to be in a dark area until March?
@@Jesus-eg3yb We usually tuck them under the benches outside, with a dome on top to keep the rain from washing the seeds away. They get some light and lots of cold weather until March.
Damon got his first carnivorous plant when he was 11 and he started sowing seeds pretty quickly. Some of the videos of large Sarracenia are his seed grown plants from around 20-30 years ago! And he’s kept that original capensis in a large pot and used its seeds to keep growing more.
😬😂 Damon was trying to warn people about the non reputable sellers - the ones who sell blue Venus flytraps and “Nepenthes” seeds that are actually just wheatgrass. I’m sorry about that! We just get so many people coming to us for help when they’ve bought a pack of chia seeds on accident.
I'm from Singapore and the seeds I bought (online) were probably from China lol. The listing did have some misleading blue VFT pics, plus i've now noticed the reviews were also fake, the people are showing adult plants as if they grew them from seed in 2 weeks *facepalm*. Still waiting for mine to germinate after 6 weeks, the seeds were small black teardrop shaped, but not shiny. So many variations, just hoping mine are legit!
It’s great that your seeds are germinating! If your Sarracenia or Venus flytrap seeds are fresh they do not need stratification and some seeds will always break the rules 😊
I’ve watched about 15 different videos explaining stratification and I learnt the most from you. Thank you!
