I think it's probably because of the nature of Venus fly traps. They aren't exactly carnivorous. They don't really "eat" their insect prey for direct nutrition. They actually ingest them and break them down into simplar forms with which they can fix their own soils. Animal (insects in this case) tissue is basically proteins. And proteins mean nitrogen and phosphorus, both of which are crucial requirements in the plants' nutrition. That's probably why a Venus fly trap seed would need a soil medium that lacks nutrition. I mean, isn't that why they are "carnivorous"? So that they can fix their infertile soil.(fertile for them to germinate in, ironically)
Would coco medium work? Coir I think it's called,I'm in south florida usa and very hot humid climate, so wanna give it a go,I'm plant savy ...thanks for sharing info....I'm trying to find info on temp to germinate or best temp....thnx again...
Hi Scott :-D I have not tried coco coir myself and wouldn't be the best to say, so sorry, but I would definitely recommend sphagnum moss, thanks so much for watching, sending lots of happy growing to South Florida for a fantastic Sunday XXXX
Hi there :-D I use special carnivorous plant soil, but you can use Sphagnum peat moss mixed with perlite for sowing and growing Venus fly traps, don't use conventional soil as it contains nutrients in the soil that will kill Carnivorous plants, happy growing to you and have a wonderful weekend XXX
@@PHXSUNSFANZ Hi Sherrii, luckily seed sowing soil is usually low in nutrients and your seedlings should be ok, and when you pot them on in the future you can then pot them up in carnivorous soil, but most seed sowing soils are very low in nutrients and they should be safe XXXX

I bought these seeds and planted them at least 1.5 weeks ago. They have a dome top, but there is air holes at the top. Nothing is happening. Am I doing something wrong? It is inside, by the sun, but it's also winter here in WI, so my house is set at 68-70. The sun hits them for a couple of hours at most. Any tips please?
Hi Megan :-D it can take a month or even more sometimes for the seeds to germinate, and I am sure they will germinate in time as it sounds like you are doing everything right, keep the soil moist at all times with rainwater and never allow the soil to dry out at any time, as long as you have sown the seeds in 100 % pure carnivorous soil or pure peat without any additional fertilisers and you are using pure rainwater or distilled water they should germinate in the next few days/ weeks :-D XXXXXX
Hi there :-D no tap water even if it is boiled and left to cool still contains too many nutrients that can kill your venus fly trap, unfortunately you can't boil away the nutrients in the water and it can even make the nutrients more condensed, the only way is to use either rainwater, distilled water or de ionised water that you can buy from supermarkets :-D good luck with growing them and sending much love and plant power XXXX
Thanks for the video! As of two days ago my seeds have germinated! I had a few nagging questions regarding the process and this was the video that covered everything.

I have a 90 gallon aquarium with fish - would aquarium water be ok for watering these plants? When I do a water change for my aquarium I would assume the water in it would be free from all sorts of minerals because they have been used up by my aquatic plants and fish
Hi there :-) no definitely do not use aquarium water for your carnivorous plants only use either rain or distilled water :-) any other water including aquarium water will kill them thanks so much forfor watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and heaps of plant power from right across the Emerald Isle and have a brilliant weekend XXXX
Great Video! I have a question, I bought a DIY Venus FlyTrap kit at a local super market and it says to freeze the seeds for 2 days, a “cooling period”. Is this necessary? My box says it could take 1-3 months Before germinating and 3 years before they will “eat meat”. Is all of this accurate? Thank you!
Hi there :-D yes this is correct, because seeds that are purchased re best frozen to stratify them before sowing but seeds that are harvested directly from your own plants can be sown right away :-D good luck with your seed sowing :-D and sending lots of love and happy growing to you from across the Emerald Isle XXXXX
I recently just bought some Venus fly trap seeds and I have put them in a plastic container with wet paper towels for germination is this ok or should I put them in soil?
Hi Eden :-) Yes you can germinate them this way but it would be best to transfer them onto soil as it will be easier to move them once they germinate because moving them from the wet paper can damage their roots when young :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and tons of plant power from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Thursday today XXXX
Hi Lyn, Just watched your video - i used to keep traps when i was a kid - i am 43 now and want to try growing from seed. I live in the sout west of England, do you think a shed with a window that gets moderate sunlight would be ok - or should i keep them in doors on a window sill. Thanks
Hi Neil :-) thanks so much for watching :-) if your shed gets sunshine during the day that will be absolutely fine to grow your seeds and Fly trap in as these plants can take the colder temperatures, but if your shed only gets a small amount of sun then you would definitely be best to keep the on a windowsill that receives plenty of sunshine once they have germinated, because Venus fly traps love as much sunshine as you can give them :-) sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Thursday XXXXX
I may have missed a step in your video, but I want to know if you should poke tiny holes in each of the two containers so it can moisturize better with the water in the large container. Do I need to do that for them to germinate? Also, I have seen some growing strategies for flytraps that use saran-wrap to cover them rather than placing them in a large plastic bag. Is the bag better for the best growth?
Hi Pat :-D yes its a good idea to put some holes in the containers, you dont need to do that for the seeds to germinate but its better to do this, I love to use the bag method but you can cover the containers with clear wrap cover too instead of the clear bags, good luck with growing from seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and have a wonderful Monday today XXXX

Hi there, you don't need to put them in the fridge but Venus fly trap seeds are best sown within 3 months of being harvested as they lose their viability faster than most other types of seeds, good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered weekend XXXX
So I went to a garden centre yesterday and I was advised to use cactus and succulent soil mix for them. Have I made an error in believing them because I sowed the seeds yesterday
Hi Aidn, oh no, yes Carnivorous seeds wont grow and will die in cactus and succulent soil mix, Carnivorous plant seeds need to be sown in only Carnivorous soil or pure sphagnum moss as any nutrients in the soil will kill them, Cactus and succulent soil is too drying and contains nutrients which is a disaster for Carnivorous plants, so sorry you have already sown them, I would go back to the garden centre and tell them they need to learn about the plants they sell, I hope you will be able to find more seeds and sow again in Carnivorous soil, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seeds XXXX
Hi there :-D yes you can plant Venus fly trap and pitcher seeds together as they require the same requirements, thinks so much for watching and good luck with your seedlings XXXX
hello :) what do you think of these venus fly trap kits, like "grow your own venus flytrap just add flies" in this kit it says that you have to soak them for 8 hours then put them in the fridge for 3 weeks, is that true?

Very informative video as I am still trying to figure out if a venus fly trap suit a closed terrarium in an office setting. I like your accent, can I ask where you're from?
Hi Jesper Lee :-D thanks so much :-D yes I am from Birmingham in England originally haha and living in Ireland for the past 13 years, 11 years in the Republic of Ireland and 1 year in Northern Ireland :-D although venus fly trap like high humidity, a closed terrarium could encourage mold because they need air flow around them and would be best to avoid planting in a closed terrarium :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle and have a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX
Hi there :_D yes its best to use pure sphagnum peat moss and no soil unless it is 100% carnivorous plant soil in the pot as any soil that contains nutrients will kill these plants, use only pure sphagnum moss or soil especially for carnivorous plants when sowing these seeds
Hi :-D it can be difficult to grow the seedlings on the grassy type of sphagnum moss as they are hard to see when very young, you would be best to use the pure peat sphagnum moss, or a commercial carnivorous soil made especially for carnivorous plants, good luck with growing from seed :-D XXXXX

@@stephanievandendriessche9565 Hi Stephanie :-D Pure Sphagnum moss is great to use as long as there are no other nutrients added to the soil, carnivorous plant soil should be available to buy from Walmart and Home depot and many garden stores, but only use soil that is especially for Carnivorous plants and not soil for normal houseplants etc, good luck with growing Venus fly trap and thanks so much for watching XXXX

Hi there :-D yes if you use pure peat mss you can definitely add perlite into it too, I open the Zip lock bag once the seeds have germinated, but still keep them in the bag to keep the humidity high for the seedlings, I would just open the zip back about half way and make sure the soil is always moist with rainwater at all times :-D Good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for watching XXXX

You should add perlite or sand to pure peat. This will help prevent root rot. Also in some places you can actually us tap water but it is best to use rain water if you aren't sure if you can use your tap water
@@funkblack Hi there, these little seedlings are doing really well, they are going through winter dormancy now in my unheated greenhouse but once the Spring arrives very soon they perk back up and grow new leaves and traps, they are about the same size as a mature Venus fly trap now, I will film an update on how are in the coming weeks once they have woken up from their winter rest, thanks so much for watching, and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Tuesday today XXXXX

I bought a seed set from a shop that sold weird gadgets n things but the instructions say to soak the seeds in water then put the seeds in a bag in the fridge for 3-6 weeks then sow the seeds in the provided peat making sure it never gets dry. Have you ever heard of this and can I miss out the 3-6 week seeds in the fridge stage? Thanks
Hi there, yes these seed kits can be great, I would definitely recommend keeping the seeds in the fridge for about a month, this is because the cold stratification process helps to speed up the germination of the seeds, usually when the seeds are freshly harvested they can be sown straight away, but with store bought Venus fly trap seeds that have been stored for a number of weeks or more, the cold process in the fridge helps to encourage the germination of the seeds once they have been introduced to the warmer temperature after the cold stratification process, Good luck with growing from seed, and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Tuesday XXXX

With germinating the seeds in the bag, how would you water them and how often? Is it ok to sprinkle some water over the top of the pot or should it be taken out the bag and place in a saucer of water for a while and then put it back in the bag?
Hi Daniel :-D when the seeds are in the bag the humidity inside the bag should keep the soil moist for a good while, but once the seeds have germinated you can remove them from the bag to water them, and you can keep the soil watered at all times, its best to place them in a saucer of water as watering from above can disturb the young seedlings, good luck with growing from seed, and thanks so much for watching XXXX

DO YOU USE SOIL OR MOSS??!!

Can I boil tap water then wait till it cools down and wet the soil?
Hi there :-D no tap water even if it is boiled and left to cool still contains too many nutrients that can kill your venus fly trap, unfortunately you can't boil away the nutrients in the water and it can even make the nutrients more condensed, the only way is to use either rainwater, distilled water or de ionised water that you can buy from supermarkets :-D good luck with growing them and sending much love and plant power XXXX

Desert Plants of Avalon just down the seeds and put them in a propagator, fingers crossed. I've used carnivorous plant focus as medium which is a peat and sand mix specifically designed for these plants. And watered with deionised water, which according to my research, is safe for Venus fly trap. :)
Thats brilliant Jamie :-D have a fantastic weekend :-D XXXX
Thank you for sharing this. I have seeds but haven’t planted them yet. I live in east coast Canada where it can get very dry cold winter temps. Will our cold temps kill the plants and what should I do to prevent this from happening.
Thats wonderful you have seeds of Venus fly trap to sow, its best to sow the seeds indoors as young seedlings can die if the temperatures are too low, once Mature Venus fly traps can be very cold hardy, but I would definitely recommend sowing the seeds indoors and keeping them indoors over the Winter months, good luck with growing from seed, and thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for watching XXXX
i can use coco peat for my VFT seeds?
Can i germinate any month of the year?
Hi Jesse :-D yes if you have grow lights you can sow seeds at any time of the year, but if not its best to sow seeds during spring and Summer, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing your seeds XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon i understand thank you

for you what is the best soil for venusflytrap
Hi David :-D I love to use pure peat as it is nutrient free and cheap to purchase from ebay and garden shops, if you buy special soil from garden centres especially for carnivorous plants it can be pricey but pure peat is far more economical and lightweight to use too :-D thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Sunday XXXX
does it grow in hot tropical country like here in the philippines?
Hi there :-D yes you can grow these Venus flytraps in a tropical country as long as the soil is kept well watered all the time, and watered with rainwater, they do prefer cooler temperatures in Winter though but I do know other growers who grow these in the Philippines and have great success as long as they are kept well watered at all times and with rainwater, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful new week XXXX
Would a heat mat be ok.
Hi :-D yes a heat mat can be used to help speed up germination, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Sunday XXXX
Hi thank you great video can they be grown under a grow light or a use day light bulb
Thank you
Regards
Steve
Hi Steve :-D yes they can grow really well under grow lights, but only use grow lights especially for plants, many of the LED plant grow lights are perfect for growing Carnivorous plants, the normal day light bulbs don't contain the full spectrum that plants need, SANSI online do a fantastic range of grow light bulbs I can really recommend, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic afternoon XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Hi Lid thank you once again for getting back to me so fast I meant to ask one more thing when I first get the seeds do I put them in rainwater first to germinate & how long for sorry to ask as I just don't know it's so different from normal seeds
So nice to have a warm bubbly lady like yourself to give me advice I'm looking forward to getting started
Have a great weekend & be safe in our crazy world of ours x
so are they good indoor plants because I have 500 seeds coming in and have they germinated and do you use the same soil as you started of with in the beginning
Hi there :-) yes these Venus fly traps make excellent indoor plants as long as you can give them plenty of either rain water or distilled water and keep them in a higher humidity atmosphere, I place mine on trays filled with rainwater as this helps to give them the extra humidity :-) yes I use the same soil that I started off with, but when it comes to potting on these plants you can use any good quality carnivorous soil mixture or either pure peat moss or Sphagnum moss :-) good luck with growing these amazing plants and sending you heaps of love and happy growing fro a FANTASTIC weekend XXXX
Edge Slash you can have the indoors but honestly, just putting them outside in a sunny spot and leaving them there works fine for me lol
Edge Slash Did they end up being fly traps? Sometimes the sellers scam people by giving them dragon fruit seeds which look similar.
Can I use ordinary moss from the garden
Hi, its only safe to use Moss that is 100% pure as Moss from the garden will be too high in natural fertiliser, only use pure moss or pure carnivorous plant soil XXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon ok thanks 😊
Another topic. I have very small white insects on my my carnivorous plants, Venus fly trap and others. I’ve looked them up, possibility being whitefly or meely bug, but still not sure. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you
Hi there, yes thrips are often very tiny little white or black insects, its best to spray them off with pure rainwater and avoid using any chemicals on carnivorous plants, you can also emerge your plant for a few seconds in a bowl of rainwater to loosen up the insects from the leaves, the insects will float up to the surface, only use rainwater or pure distilled or de ionised water and tap water though, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and have a wonderful plant powered weekend XXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon thanks for reply. You too 😊

Can you leave water out a few days and let the minerals evaporate?
Hi there, unfortunately although the chemicals will evaporate the minerals will still be in the water, only rainwater or pure distilled or de ionised water or reverse osmosis water can be used, XXXXX
Can I use the green stuffs you germinate other seeds in😊
Hi Alandri :-D you can use the seed starter trays etc as long as you don't use commercial soil or compost and only use carnivorous plant soil, thanks so much for watching and happy growing to you XXXX
ma'am, how long will it take before i remove them on baggie?
Hi :-D once the seedlings gave germinated you can open up the baggies but still keep the bag on to keep the humidity high, and keep the soil moist at all times, thanks so much for watching and good luck growing from seed XXXX
Hi! Newbie here. I’m about to plant my first VFT and I would like to ask if your containers have holes for drainage? Thanks in advance. Lots of love from Philippines!
Hi Angelo :-D yes I have holes in my containers for drainage, thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to the Philippines for a wonderful weekend XXXX
Hi I have a question after you put the seed in that bag i don’t have to worry about it for a month? Or I still have to check on them for more water??
Hi Silvia :-D you don't need to worry about them for a month as the sealed bag will stop water evaporating but if you notice the soil starting to dry out then you can open the bag and add water :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Thursday XXXX
What type of soil do you prefer for keeping a mature venus fly trap?
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) I either use a special compost especially for Carnivorous plants, or just pure peat moss with added perlite :-) thanks a million for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle and have a brilliant Thursday XXXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon Thanks a lot! My new venus flytrap will be happier than ever!
