I think it's probably because of the nature of Venus fly traps. They aren't exactly carnivorous. They don't really "eat" their insect prey for direct nutrition. They actually ingest them and break them down into simplar forms with which they can fix their own soils. Animal (insects in this case) tissue is basically proteins. And proteins mean nitrogen and phosphorus, both of which are crucial requirements in the plants' nutrition. That's probably why a Venus fly trap seed would need a soil medium that lacks nutrition. I mean, isn't that why they are "carnivorous"? So that they can fix their infertile soil.(fertile for them to germinate in, ironically)
You sound so happy 😊 😍 ♥.... And so you should, you have just saved my seeds as they were heading for certain death. I was about to use multi purpose compost and tap water... So glad I found you! Thanks!

I recently just bought some Venus fly trap seeds and I have put them in a plastic container with wet paper towels for germination is this ok or should I put them in soil?
Hi Eden :-) Yes you can germinate them this way but it would be best to transfer them onto soil as it will be easier to move them once they germinate because moving them from the wet paper can damage their roots when young :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and tons of plant power from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Thursday today XXXX

With germinating the seeds in the bag, how would you water them and how often? Is it ok to sprinkle some water over the top of the pot or should it be taken out the bag and place in a saucer of water for a while and then put it back in the bag?
Hi Daniel :-D when the seeds are in the bag the humidity inside the bag should keep the soil moist for a good while, but once the seeds have germinated you can remove them from the bag to water them, and you can keep the soil watered at all times, its best to place them in a saucer of water as watering from above can disturb the young seedlings, good luck with growing from seed, and thanks so much for watching XXXX

I may have missed a step in your video, but I want to know if you should poke tiny holes in each of the two containers so it can moisturize better with the water in the large container. Do I need to do that for them to germinate? Also, I have seen some growing strategies for flytraps that use saran-wrap to cover them rather than placing them in a large plastic bag. Is the bag better for the best growth?
Hi Pat :-D yes its a good idea to put some holes in the containers, you dont need to do that for the seeds to germinate but its better to do this, I love to use the bag method but you can cover the containers with clear wrap cover too instead of the clear bags, good luck with growing from seeds and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER and have a wonderful Monday today XXXX
Great Video! I have a question, I bought a DIY Venus FlyTrap kit at a local super market and it says to freeze the seeds for 2 days, a “cooling period”. Is this necessary? My box says it could take 1-3 months Before germinating and 3 years before they will “eat meat”. Is all of this accurate? Thank you!
Hi there :-D yes this is correct, because seeds that are purchased re best frozen to stratify them before sowing but seeds that are harvested directly from your own plants can be sown right away :-D good luck with your seed sowing :-D and sending lots of love and happy growing to you from across the Emerald Isle XXXXX

Thank you for sharing this. I have seeds but haven’t planted them yet. I live in east coast Canada where it can get very dry cold winter temps. Will our cold temps kill the plants and what should I do to prevent this from happening.
Thats wonderful you have seeds of Venus fly trap to sow, its best to sow the seeds indoors as young seedlings can die if the temperatures are too low, once Mature Venus fly traps can be very cold hardy, but I would definitely recommend sowing the seeds indoors and keeping them indoors over the Winter months, good luck with growing from seed, and thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for watching XXXX

Hi, Im also curious for the coco peat as an alternative for the moss since it is more accessible for me, I think it also does not have any nutrition but what do you think @Desert Plants of Avalon ?
@@keeraborromeo7594 Hi there :-D I am pretty sure that Coco coir has very little if any nutrients and may be safe to use with Carnivorous plants, but because I have not used it myself I would not want to say 100% as I have heard that some Coco peat / coir has added salts that can be harmful, it can be difficult to say for sure, if you do decide to use it I would soak the coco peat for 24 hours in rainwater or distilled water and keep changing the water every few hours to remove any traces of salts etc, Good luck with growing your seeds and if you use the coco peat /coir let me know how you get on, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Sunday XXXX

Hi :-D a very bright position that receives indirect sunshine is best, once the seeds have germinated and the bag is removed you can then place in a sunny position but make sure the soil is kept well moist at all times, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seed XXXX
So I went to a garden centre yesterday and I was advised to use cactus and succulent soil mix for them. Have I made an error in believing them because I sowed the seeds yesterday
Hi Aidn, oh no, yes Carnivorous seeds wont grow and will die in cactus and succulent soil mix, Carnivorous plant seeds need to be sown in only Carnivorous soil or pure sphagnum moss as any nutrients in the soil will kill them, Cactus and succulent soil is too drying and contains nutrients which is a disaster for Carnivorous plants, so sorry you have already sown them, I would go back to the garden centre and tell them they need to learn about the plants they sell, I hope you will be able to find more seeds and sow again in Carnivorous soil, thanks so much for watching and good luck with growing from seeds XXXX
How long does it generally take for the plant to start showing out of the soil? Just curious cause I know they are slow growers and not sure if mine germinated or not and if I’m wasting my time watering dirt or if the plant is still going
Hi Tim :-D the seeds can take up to 8 weeks to germinate, usually they will germinate in a couple of weeks but it can take longer an di would wait for up to 2 months before giving up on them, I hope your seeds germinate for you, thanks so much for watching XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you for the quick reply! So I started them around early March and so far nothing. So maybe by the end of this month early next month something will show. Thank you again
Always found it better once the fly trap has started growing the seed pod is to remove the petals from the plant and always done very well from doing this rather than leaving them to get on with it their self's
Thanks so much, normal soil wouldn't be suitable because these plants get their fertiliser from catching insects and soil with nutrients would kill the plant by poisoning the plant, thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Thursday XXXX
Hi there :_D yes its best to use pure sphagnum peat moss and no soil unless it is 100% carnivorous plant soil in the pot as any soil that contains nutrients will kill these plants, use only pure sphagnum moss or soil especially for carnivorous plants when sowing these seeds

hi lyn im new to carnivorous plants and ive just bought my first nepenthes and the plant its self looks normal and healthy but the pitchers are dead and im asuming its under winter dormancy and im just wondering if i should prune the plant of the dead pichers or will they grow back in spring and ive done re search but its not telling me what i want to hear haha and im wondering if they like purified water as i dont have a water butt in the garden yet to catch rain water id really appreciate your advise please because you are the best :) hehe
Thats brilliant news Lee that you have bought your first Nepenthes plant :-) the good news is you can leave the dried pitchers on or you can trim them to make them look neater, I trim the dried dead bits off to make them look neater, and I made a video a few months ago about trimming them and will post up the link below, the best water to use is rainwater, I know that you can use distilled water too, I am not sure about purified water but I would think that it would be ok to use also due to the lack of nutrients it would contain :-) Nepenthes are more tolerant of tap water than the other Carnivorous plants, but rainwater or distilled is always the best if possible :-) here is the link to the video I made on trimming Carnivorous plants including my Nepenthes pitchers :-) th-cam.com/video/gefVB7U9kPU/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness and happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle and have a BRILLIANT afternoon XXXXXX

Hi your video was v informative, am trying to grow v fly trap at mo. Have seeds planted in egg shell halfs with soil from ground. Have in tent under lights but they don't seem to be coming up. Would appreciate any advice.
Hi Tom :-) thanks so much for watching :-) it sounds like you are doing everything right with the lights but if you are not using soil especially for carnivorous plants then the seeds will not grow and will most likely die as these plants need a totally mineral free soil e.g pure peat or sphagnum moss, as soil from the ground or multi purpose composts will prevent the germination and kill any of the young seedlings if they germinate, hope this helps and good luck with growing from seed :-) sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful day XXXX

Hello there . Just come across your channel I love Venus fly traps but every time I buy them I always kill the plant ? And I dig inside the soil and find nothing in pot. Could I please have some tips on this . Can they be left out in frost & cold ? All could it be I’m over watering the plant. And do I bring plant inside house over the winter . Thanks rich ❤
Hi Rich :-D So sorry to hear you lose your Venus flytraps, Do you use rainwater when you water your Venus fly traps ? as the biggest problem with Venus fly traps is that they need a nutrient free water, and tap water will kill them, only rainwater or distilled water should be used for them, they do lose their leaves and traps during their rest periods and they go back into the soil as a rhizome, and then in the spring they re grow from the rhizome and send out new shots and traps, a lot of people think that their Venus fly traps have died and throw them away, but its normal for Venus fly traps to go black and lose all their leaves when they come to the end of their growing season and go dormant, most of my Venus flytraps vanish under the soil until now ( spring ) when the new shoots start to appear on top of the soil again, Venus fly traps love to be kept watered all the time as long as its not tap water or bottled water, and only rainwater or distilled should be used for them, they are very cold hardy but its still best to protect them from frost in winter, its best to give them a cold overwintering outdoors but protected from frost but still lightly watered as their Rhizomes in the soil like to be kept moist even when they are dormant, light isn't important when they are dormant but during their active growing period they need plenty of direct sunshine, I hope this helps and happy growing to you, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Hi there :-D because I have only sown seeds direct from my own plants after harvesting I have not had to put them in the fridge before but some growers do recommend that you do this if you purchase seeds, I dont think it is 100% necessary but giving them the cold treatment does help to stratify the seeds and helps encourage germination, and I think it would be best to definitely follow what it says on the growing kit and put them in the fridge for six weeks first XXXXX
Hi Wayne :-D yes you can still sow seeds now and they should germinate but if you have the choice its best to wait until Spring when the days get longer for much greater chance of success, Good luck for your nephew with growing from seed and thank you for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a terrific Thursday today XXXX
Hi, are you in Ireland? I'm going to grow these, I've looked into where they grow and it's in marshes, would this be a bad time to plant some seeds or would it be better to start early next year, could I keep them coming up in the house for next year and what's the best media to keep them in, is sphagnum moss ok as I've plenty around me in the forests here? Thanks
Hi Graeme :-D yes I live in Belfast, you can definitely plant Venus fly trap seeds at this time of year and late Summer can often be the best time, you can keep them in the house over the Winter especially when they are still young seedlings, Sphagnum moss is perfect to use for Venus fly trap seeds and for the venus fly trap plants, but the only problem may be is if you are collecting the sphagnum moss from the forests there may be too many nutrients from any past leaves, earth in the moss, but if you could soak the sphagnum moss in rainwater and then rinse the moss a few times in the rainwater to remove any nutrients from falling leaves etc then you can use the sphagnum moss for the perfect media, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Do correct me if I'm wrong anywhere 😄

I recently just bought some Venus fly trap seeds and I have put them in a plastic container with wet paper towels for germination is this ok or should I put them in soil?

Thank you!

Hello again after the plants germinated can we use tap water or drinkable water

Does sand work?
Hi there, I wouldn't recommend sand as it is too drying for the roots, I would only use a commercial carnivorous plant soil or pure sphagnum moss, thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Friday XXXX
Oof rip me Venus flytrap seeds because i bought a kit and put in tap water..
Well in Australia watering with tap water hasnt failed so far.

Good afternoon from Doncaster South Yorkshire . I would like to let you know that I found your video very informative. I have just purchased 3 seeds online and this tutorial will be a great help. Have a nice day and thank you.... John :) ( I have liked and subscribed )..
So happy you enjoyed the video John, and found it informative, and thank you so much for subscribing :-D good luck with growing from seed and have a wonderful day today XXXX
Hey john how is your plant doing
@@memesmfiaz1607 Hello 🙋♂️ Unfortunately the project has had to be put on hold 😟 I have been in a lot of pain due to Spinal surgery... I am okay now 😊 but I haven't planted the seeds fearing that it might be too late 🤔 I hope you are well 😀 and thanks for asking... John 👍😎
@@johnberry5339 Sorry to hear that about your spine. Im really happy to hear your all good now. Makes me sad you had to go through it in the first place. Let me know how it goes.
I planted my first seeds today. Found rain water in bucket lying around outside so i used that. Ive just wrapped a plastic bag around the small plant pot to help with the humidity and leave it like that now inside my wardrobe i think she said for 15 days lol.
Anyway have a lovely week/end and stay safe.
@@memesmfiaz1607 Okay thanks for letting me know it's not too late 👍I will plant them tomorrow and follow the instructions 🏜 Thanks again & I hope that you also have a great week/end 😎
so are they good indoor plants because I have 500 seeds coming in and have they germinated and do you use the same soil as you started of with in the beginning
Hi there :-) yes these Venus fly traps make excellent indoor plants as long as you can give them plenty of either rain water or distilled water and keep them in a higher humidity atmosphere, I place mine on trays filled with rainwater as this helps to give them the extra humidity :-) yes I use the same soil that I started off with, but when it comes to potting on these plants you can use any good quality carnivorous soil mixture or either pure peat moss or Sphagnum moss :-) good luck with growing these amazing plants and sending you heaps of love and happy growing fro a FANTASTIC weekend XXXX
Edge Slash you can have the indoors but honestly, just putting them outside in a sunny spot and leaving them there works fine for me lol
Edge Slash Did they end up being fly traps? Sometimes the sellers scam people by giving them dragon fruit seeds which look similar.
good job !!!!!!!!
looking forwards to see them growing.
xx Stef
Thanks so much Stef for your wonderful comment :-) its going to be such fun growing these Venus flytrap from seed :-) thanks a million for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic new week ahead XXXXX
Can I use the green stuffs you germinate other seeds in😊
Hi Alandri :-D you can use the seed starter trays etc as long as you don't use commercial soil or compost and only use carnivorous plant soil, thanks so much for watching and happy growing to you XXXX
yes im going to be starting mine here soon
Good luck with growing them its so much fun :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald isle for a FANTASTIC Friday XXXXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon yes i hope so i have luck with this will be my 1 st ever growning them form seed i have ones that looks like mario form the video game also form seed i hope u can help me with thoese also well
Hi your video was v informative, am trying to grow v fly trap at mo.
Hello, will sphagnum peat moss work as well? I repotted a flytrap I bought mixing sphagnum peat moss with perlite and they seem to be doing good. I pollinated my flytrap and am just waiting for the seeds now
Hi Noel :-D yes Spagnum peat moss with perlite is perfect for Venus fly traps, and thats wonderful news you have pollinated your flytrap, good luck with the seeds and thanks so much for watching XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon .hello again thank you so much for getting back to me . I use rain water only in a clay plant pot .and I’ve just bought some Venus flytrap seeds .so fingers crossed . I always keep the pot wet in summer and winter not so much . .? Thanks again for your help .thanks again rich x👍🇬🇧
@@richardperry5880 Thats fantastic you have got some Venus flytrap seeds, its so wonderful to grow them from seeds, yes keep the pot always wet in the Winter months too, happy growing to you and have a wonderful evening XXXX
If you are using terracotta or clay pots you might want to research a bit, as they normally leak nutrients into the soil and it’s best to use a plastic pot better
love your passion!!! :)

Does close terrarium works too rather than plastic bag?
Hi Michael :-D yes a closed terrarium will work well too, but once the seeds have germinated I would allow air to get into the terrarium for ventilation, thanks so much for watching and good luck growing from seed XXXX
Hi
Can i use Coco Peat for growing Venus FlyTraps?
Hi there :-D I am not familiar with coco peat for carnivorous plants and would not be the best to say, I have only used pure peat or carnivorous soil, XXXXXX
Do you have to put them in the fridge for six weeks?
Hi there :-D because I have only sown seeds direct from my own plants after harvesting I have not had to put them in the fridge before but some growers do recommend that you do this if you purchase seeds, I dont think it is 100% necessary but giving them the cold treatment does help to stratify the seeds and helps encourage germination, and I think it would be best to definitely follow what it says on the growing kit and put them in the fridge for six weeks first XXXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon Okay, thanks. Merry Christmas!
Would they still grow if I plant the seeds now without grow lights, being October ? my nephew has a carnivorous kit and is really excited to start.
@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you for your detailed reply, I live in Carrickfergus out in the country and I grow floats of things, I watched a guy on TH-cam called Chris Trump KNF watch some of his stuff like LAB and more, another great guy is Garden Like a Viking he will show you how and why you do these different things, basically you're putting biology in the media that reacts with the plants roots, you see a difference in 10 mins and beyond that is incredible, I see you do succulents, I've got my Aloe out the back raging in the weather with a few biological amendments, I grow everything outside, you unlock the power of nature and its incredible, if you want any help or anything I can give you better info by email.
@@desertplantsofavalon I also watched a video on fly traps needing to go dormant in the winter or they die later on if they don't, that's why I was thinking early next year give them a good start.

Can I use peat moss mixed perlite? And how often do you open the zip bag?
Hi there :-D yes if you use pure peat mss you can definitely add perlite into it too, I open the Zip lock bag once the seeds have germinated, but still keep them in the bag to keep the humidity high for the seedlings, I would just open the zip back about half way and make sure the soil is always moist with rainwater at all times :-D Good luck with growing from seed and thanks so much for watching XXXX
