Hard to believe it took this long for Bruce Springsteen’s official TH-cam channel to upload this, but better late than never. Turn off the lights, play this on the biggest screen you have with a decent sound system (as loud as you dare)-and repeat. Even in their early days Bruce and the boys were absolute masters of dynamic range, and this performance is one of the best examples of that. Fantastic example of early E Street-Bruce Springsteen was just 26 years old when this was filmed.

Tommy Jackman Hey , Man, you think that’s oil?
      That ain’t oil; that’s blood.
I took that out of context, but it’s an apt line today. When I was looking for the meaning of the song, came across an article in the LA Times about Bruce’s East Berlin concert, and it’s contribution to the destruction of their wall. That must have been some concert.
Sad how he has seen so much of the world, knows so much, and can’t really speak to a lot of his fans. Must be frustrating.☝️

they had to milk all the money from the BTR deluxe package where this was an exclusive dvd. and build some hype to get the most views from first doing audio releases on vinyl and streaming services. thats my theory. but, thank god I can see it now! ive considered this album the greatest live performance ive ever heard. prefer all of these versions to the original recordings too. such a blessing its on the tube now

I have to say as a lifelong musician who didn't grow up listening to his older stuff, I always have to listen to it once, read the lyric sheet, then listen to it again before I really enjoy it and understand the brilliance of it...his writing and delivery are so unusual that I'm usually too exhausted trying to keep up with the song the first time I hear these wordy older tunes to enjoy it much the first go around but what a musical adventure it becomes.

“Sticker smiles sweet, as Gunner breathes deep. His ankles caked in mud. I said “Hey Gunner, man that's quicksand. That's quicksand it ain't mud. Have you thrown your senses to the war? Or did you lose them in the flood?” -
This line is likely my favorite of the whole piece. It’s description and metaphorical symbolism are the blunt full stop to end a tornado of an introductory first stanza.
We have already learned Gunner has just returned back from Vietnam. I like to envision Gunner in this line to be sitting at a quiet bus stop or park bench still in his uniform and looking as though he just got off the plane (when in reality he’s been back for weeks) with his newly made friend Sticker by his side. Gunners fingernails still carry beneath them the dust off the Vietnamese plains, the smell of gasoline still lingers on his coat and the mud is still encrusted to his boots. Sticker notices this and is quick to identify the hidden danger he carries on his heels and says “Hey Gunner, man that's quicksand. That's quicksand it ain’t mud”. Quicksand (in my belief) in this phrase is a metaphor for the burden of the war drowning Gunner in depression and dragging him down without his realization. The mud being still present on his boots is also symbolic of the everlasting impact a traumatic experience can have on an individual. The verse then finishes with Sticker asking Gunner “Have you thrown your senses to the war? Or did you lose them in the flood?”.
Physically Gunner is back on home soil, but (as insinuated by Sticker) he has left his soul on the battlefield and is now the vacant husk of the man he once was.
Gunner is a lost man. Lost in the Flood.

It was a big mantle to be placed on Bruce. First, the comparison to Dylan, and then when the world finds out about it, he is called the future of rock and roll. The Dylan thing would fade, but I agree with whoever said that. Bruce proved that without knowing. This early stuff done live here just THRILLS me!
