So very true! They were from a time that being a celebrity also came with having class, tact and diplomacy. Except, of course, if you were Don Rickles. Lol And even then it was his public persona. Privately Don was a class act, from what I understand!

These legends also performed in front of much more clever, socially adept and morally based audiences than the mostly socially inept and morally challenged audiences we have today. Society overall had more couth and discretion at that time.

The sheer brass balls to do a roast with no jokes, then take Dean’s napkin, bum a pen off Tom, put Frank through a nightmare “fan asks for a signature “ routine, ask to mail a oven pan, and the topper of all toppers, get Frank to sing. Absolutely stunning. All in character. Which goes to the heart of Columbo; a soft-spoken old fart who’s demure and wavering presence belies the chutzpah it takes to get the unwilling and powerful to do what he wants.

I've read, the part of Colombo ,was written for Sinatra, he was supposed to be a more suave, dapper interpretation of the character. He turned the role down ,of course, and Peter Falk, took the "shabby" persona,on.

@@anthonygee2441 Columbo did depart from the normal Who-done-it format where the viewer attempts to determine the culprit along with the detective with a new How-catch-em style that typically showed the murder at the very start but the viewer was left wondering how the detective would capture or identify the perpetrator.

Frank's nightclub and concerts had different "comedy"- and I use the term loosely- than his television work. Among his favorite targets of his personal attacks, over the years, were Dorothy Kilgallen, Rona Barrett, and Rex Reed. I don't think the audience cared about such things, but Frank enjoyed it, and it gave him some breathing time between songs.
