She is the epitom of pure classical music. She is a musician, not an entertainer like Ravi. Its hard to imagine such a gem existed and only few recognized. A huge injustice by Ravi, how could he let her not perform music in public? Why couldnt they be famous together, that too after 40 years of marriage. Ravi is a womeniser, see how he had a daughter with his manager and did not even avknowledge her existence on his own?

@@shekharlovekar8917 not denigrading anyone. Stating fact is not denigration. His oersinal life sucks, lowly life. Music wise, he is just above average. Remember, his popularity is among the western audience whose main exposure to Indian classical music is thru Ravi. A reason why he is over rated in the west.

@@RandomVideoClixso he's an amazing musician...life seems very great...and the west loves him yet he toured all around the world and got all sorts of love from millions...the original person who made this comment doesn't even have their facts straight she performed live before. @@RandomVideoClix while personal and professional lives are different and don't want to comment on it, but certain facts need to be acknowledged. Whether it was unjust behaviour towards Annapurna Devi.. Yes, no doubt. Secondly, whether he is the best Sitar player.. Answer is NO. He is popular in West but in India there are many Sitar players who were better than him. Infact his own Gurubandhu Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, to me, is far superior. There is significant difference in the way they play. But having said so, we need certain artists for certain role they play in taking the Indian classical music to higher level. Pt. Ravi Shankar definitely played this role perfectly

Hence the influence and the likeness thereof, I suppose, for Banerjee was a strict adherent of the classical Seniya-Maihar style of Baba which he had inherited from his Ustad Wazir Khan of Rampur.

I have heard manj khamaj by Ali Akbar Khan- Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee. Every time I hear the Raag, I cant help but think how light hearted and 'bollywoodish' the raag is.
But listening to the rendition by Ma Annapurna Devi really showed me the beauty of the raag. It is devine and sublime. And nothing like how the boys have played it.

So stop setting that holy bar that true legends will not play for money. Indian classical music needs to survive and it is okay to play for money or to simply sell art, what’s not okay is compromising on the quality of that art which Ravi Shankar did, Annapurna Devi didn’t!

Her vow to never again perform in public or record again was a terrible loss. But she had issues other than her husband's behaviour. A talent as great as hers should have been shared. Sequestering it as she did was a personal decision but I can't help thinking that it was a gift that God intended to be shared. To deny this was tragic.

one thing i have to say , to praise one artist if you have to compare him/her with another , thats insulting the music of that artist . Because it kind of shows that the impact of another's artists musicality ,that they have been dragged without context. Annapoorna devi ji's music speaks for itself, it does not need to extra validation to be "better than" ravi ji or anyone else music to be considered worthy . Idiots think they are sounding very gyaani by saying these but unfortunately they are ending up insulting the artist's music in the context only. It's a creative field, and it's impossible to compare qualitative form of anything. So these comparisons mean nothing. Just shows the daftness of the audience .period.
