  • A psychotherapist gets in a love triangle with a patient with split personalities.
VOID AND METHOD is used with permission from Remy Bazerque and Sweetdoh Films. Learn more at sweetdoh.com.
Bruno is a psychotherapist who works with many patients with all kinds of issues. A little bit bored or removed from his work, he starts counseling a particularly distressed patient, Julia, who has dissociative identity disorder -- otherwise once known as multiple personalities.
He becomes more and more embroiled with Julia and becomes drawn into a strange triangle with Julia's different and warring personalities. One is distressed, weak and traumatized, while the other is assertive, manipulative and perhaps even a little sexy.
When Bruno crosses the line with Julia's "other" personality, it sets off a contagion of events that not only sets off a dangerous game between Julia's two selves but entangles Bruno in a knot of power, desire and consequence that he may not be able to extricate himself from.
Writer-director Remy Bazerque's fascinating, tense psychological drama is about blurred lines: between patient and doctor, reality and fantasy, and fascination and repulsion. It draws viewers in with the idea of multiple personalities, but it becomes a study into losing control -- of situations, and of ethics -- and losing one's self in the process.
The storytelling is classically constructed with unusual care of detail in establishing the characters and central dilemma, and the camerawork and editing pay great care to making sure the audience knows what each character is feeling and thinking. The film also has a particularly dark and moody look, emphasizing perhaps its roots in film noir-influenced thriller.
The events of the film are closely tethered to the characters, and the writing's strength is in how each development in the narrative is tied to deeper revelations of the characters. The forward momentum is powered by questions of how deep the layers of self-deceit and damage go -- and just how manipulative Julia and her personalities are.
Skilled performances are key to making this story work, and the short features two strong, though very different, ones. Actor Laurent Bateau captures the self-contained psychotherapist, who has just enough ennui in his life to be drawn into this strange love triangle against his conscious will. Actor Zoe Telford plays the two personalities of Julia with precision, and what's fascinating is watching the relationship between these two "selves" develop as the story goes on.
The relationship that moves everything forward is not just between patient and client but between Julia's two personalities, and watching it play out with Bruno as the ultimate pawn is both clever and thrilling to watch.
VOID AND METHOD at its core teases at fascinating questions of what it means to have a self. Do we get to choose who we are? Or are we who we are, and we have to make peace and accept that? One of the film's most emblematic moments is when Julia's "weaker" personality longs to "become" her stronger, more manipulative one. The questions and events of the short could easily be expanded into a longer feature that could offer a deeper look into this dark and compelling story. While we may not be able to relate to having multiple personalities, we can all explore notions of how we relate to the parts of ourselves and our experience we despise or are ashamed of.

This may be seen as entertaining by some, however, it is an inaccurate portrayal of dissociative identity disorder, which is a reaction to trauma typically occurring before age 6. The powerful mind realizes that there are no resources for the body (or even the mind) to cope with the horror taking place and thus escapes by creating another "personality" that's sole purpose/focus is to deal with the situation, while the core personality is protected from the experience until a later time (usually adulthood) to process the situation and the feelings in a safe environment. The therapist has selfishly taken advantage of this survivor of trauma by moving the boundaries that were the safety net to fulfill sexual desire. This causes further destabilization. It has happened to other survivors I've known and caused them greater lack of clarity because of the therapist's desire to break their own oath to the safety of the patient and to their own profession's standards. As a survivor of DID, I found this a disappointing portrayal of the serious nature of trauma bonding.

    Hey,
i am a big fan of your short movies. For this particular one i felt there was not enough research being done. Like some other people in the comment section and myself as a person who is friends with a person having dissociative personality disorder the way the interaction between the Patient and the doctor aswell as the switches are being played out here are not realistic at all. Please be aware that dissociative personality disorded is very stigmatized and to misinform people watching your shorts who are themselves not educated will enhance that stigma.
    thank you for your consideration
also, please put a suicide trigger warning in short films like this, just to like reduce triggers or people potentially harming themselves.
    thank you

yes, I've been recovered now but it took 3 decades and even 4 years ago this would be very triggering. very poor portrayal.

this is very well spoken, thank you. i hope your voice gets taken into consideration. i don't struggle with DID, but i do battle other mental health challenges, which are also stigmatized and have battled with suicidal ideation for awhile now. i am more stable, currently, but scenes like those depicted can definitely be triggering for many. I agree, about having a warning, not just for this film, but for quite a bit of their content, as I have quickly found out. thank you for speaking out.

@@susanrhodes5681 i know i am a stranger, but as someone who's faced many dark battles... i am glad for you that you are now at a place where you can say that. recovery from any battle requires a lot of work, perseverance, conjuring up strength, and having a good support system, as well as allowing yourself permission to work through things at the pace that best works for you; having patience and grace with yourself. I imagine you've come quite a long ways and that's definitely something to be proud of.

      YEAH bro!!
But the truth is not everyone has time to watch a documentary on DID. So what is the point of investing all that time, money and effort into making a drama that misrepresents it? What about DID sufferers, who struggle with limited public understanding of their condition? They have to live with that.
