  • A man murders his wife and brainwashes the kids into believing a lie.
AN ILLUSION IN RED AND WHITE is used with permission from John Conway. Learn more at cinema.usc.edu.
A young boy, Freddy, is tending to a dead animal on his farm when a stranger walks past and gives him a laconic greeting. But before the boy can wonder who the stranger is, he's told to do his chores by his father, Mr. Jones, a stern and harsh man. This is the same man who will murder his wife and mother at the breakfast table, right in front of the boy and his sister Lucy.
The two terrified children remain on the isolated farm with their father, who slowly twists the children's questions around to sculpt a new memory of what happened in the children's mind.
He also begins to be a little kinder to Freddy and Lucy, though a tinge of threat rears its head when Freddy especially questions the details that the father begins to plant in his children's minds, especially that of a stranger with red hair, big white teeth and white hands who came into the home and hit their mother in the head.
But despite everything, justice catches up to the father -- though not without having an indelible, chilling effect on the minds of his two young children.
Writer-director John Conway's quietly riveting psychological drama -- based on the haunting short story by American literary great Stephen Crane -- takes place in post-Civil War America. But with its emphasis on the malleability of memory, emotion and feeling -- and the twisting of innocence to nefarious ends -- it feels startlingly modern and contemporary.
The literary pedigree of the source material informs the film's artistry, and the storytelling takes its time to set up character and setting with great care and detail. There is a sober classicism in the craftsmanship, with rich and shadowy cinematography, stately editing, and a darkly bewitching musical score. The result is an atmosphere of mystery that pulls viewers in the dark, twisted and unnervingly calm world of the Jones family.
The performances are especially effective in their understatement and matter-of-factness, especially of Mr. Jones, who begins the film as a shadowy, opaque figure shrouded in shadows -- a harsh voice coming out of a dark silhouette. Actor Brett Rickaby ably shades Jones with a foxlike calculation, especially as the father ramps up a false warmth and conviviality with his children as his own lies escalate with them. He pulls his children in as co-conspirators in his deception -- and though it is not enough to keep the secret in the end, its effect on Freddy and Lucy is incalculable.
AN ILLUSION IN RED AND WHITE is a fascinating watch, especially at a time when there is much discussion about gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation in which a person or group covertly sows seeds of doubt into someone, making them question their own memory, perception or judgment. But the real twist of the knife is watching a father twist children's natural desire to win the love and approval of their parents to cruel and selfish ends. The final scene encapsulates perfectly just how lingering such manipulation is, and how persistent a child's desire to love and believe in their parent can be -- much to tragic effect sometimes.

Shanniese Stewart yeah, her mind wasn’t able to file the emotion and shock she was feeling so she clung to the first solution someone gave her, which was the lie her dad told her it actually happens a lot in cases of people with PTSD, eventually Freddy’s mind broke down too and his mind decided the best way to deal with the situation was to cling to something that made sense because his dad murdering his mom didn’t make sense.

The whole world tells him that he should look to his father for moral guidance, and thus that his father is the superior being. When this is his premise, any contradictory information creates cognitive dissonance which must be explained away, even if it's a mountain of evidence, and the premise that he's an inferior being provides the explanation. It is rare for a child to successfully combat this, and it is realistic that he is able to do so momentarily but then relapses. This is why children so often retract accusations of their parents, which is music to the ears of child abusers. Common sense should tell the rest of us that if a child is ever, however fleetingly, willing to jeopardize his/her welfare by accusing a parent, something is very wrong.

Later, he would apologize (sometimes) but never mend his ways. At that time, I thought it was okay and that he loved me regardless. It came to a point where I couldn't look at myself in the mirror. I got out of it only when he started hitting me. But now I realize that mental abuse is harder to recover from than physical abuse. And never believe when they apologize but don't mend their ways.

Astonishing the effectiveness/and not, of brainwashing on children, of the power of the manipulative effect of adults over children. I'm reminded strongly of the misinformation in our time being wielded on vulnerable sectors by many so-called "journalists" and politicians of the right, and their extraordinary rate of success at convincing folks it's better to die than do minimal life-saving measures aimed at all our wellbeing. Wow. Those folks are sacrificing your lives to further their filthy political ambitions. Your lives are definitely worth more than their political ambitions. I wish more unvaccinated folks could get this. We want you to live. The right does not give a flying sh*t if you die. Their only aim is to get elected, and if that happens, just watch how it hurts you, b/c their only care is the bottom line of the wealthy. Please listen up folks. We're trying to save all of us, not just the 1%. Give it your best thought. Be well, I sincerely wish COVID spares your family and pray that you are vaccinated so that that can happen.

The little girl was praised for going along and Freddie recognized he would not get the love and attention until he went along too. But he rejected his son at the prison for not being convincing enough which leads me to believe maybe that maybe he wasn't his son. In any even it messed up Freddie for the rest of his life.

He said your not my son because he didn’t get him off on the murder charge. He disowned him..... he said sorry pa and he replied I’m going to hang and your sorry??? So I gathered he disowns him after the boy pleads for forgiveness saying he told them but they wouldn’t listen. His dad was insane and I think started to believe the lie himself. Really twisted

Shows also how people can stay in abusive relationships, things are made to seem different then they are in actuality, sometimes a lie is easier to live with and after so long of living with lies we choose to stay in that world, rather than come to terms with the reality of what our life actually is.
