The doctrine for MT-LB usage was exactly like this: it is neither APC (slow and ineffective on roads), nor IFV (slow and under-armed), nor a reconnaisance vehicle (slow and big), nor an artillery tow vehicle (not extremely passable). It is just something. You can do whatever you want with that and it will have equally mediocre performace everywhere. Which is strength.

Some of the other commenters already opined my own thoughts, that this Ukrainian vehicle re-design is directly reminiscent of German WWII modifications by taking T38, Pzkw 1-2 chasses, removing original production turrets, and replacing with 75MM PAK anti-tank guns with a welded surround of steel plates to protect the gun crews. Overall the concept worked somewhat well for the Germans for the most part, particularly on the Eastern Front. So let's see how this goes. Thanks again for posting such a cool video.
Them Maxims are undergoing upgrades like belt-less ammo feeding mechanism, IR & night sights, muzzle brake, ceramic armored face plate, gyro stabilization, etc. Wasteful "spray & pray" is finished. Drone efficiency is evolving.
Twilight 2000 becomes real life. Imagine a version of these in 1944. Understand the 122mm decision the Soviets made for the JS series, but would still argue they'd have kicked real ass if they'd taken the 100mm instead, early enough, and made a triple threat gun-vehicle family: their version of the PAK 43, a good Artillery Gun, and a good AA gun.
@@zoiders Tank destroyers can really be almost anything. there were tank destroyers that were jeeps with a 37mm on the back. The Chieftan has a great video on tank destroyers, if you haven't seen it already.

This would seem to be a puff piece for the morale of Western Consoomers with little knowledge tbh, Ukrainians are brave, not stupid and so wouldn´t use this if they had quite literally anything else to choose from.
It won't last long the way it gets shoved a meter or more every shot. You can see the effect on the track ready to fall off. It needs a blade at the back.
If you look closely. Tank is out of gear so when it fires it rolls back on its tracks absorbing the recoil.

No, not at all besides both having a gun but it doesn´t work like a Tank destroyer since they A: can´t fire the non-stabilized gun when moving and B: the crew got to dismount and use a bloody lanyard to fire it, this is sub-par for WWII tech. It looks cool for the uneducated masses but this is just a puff piece bit with very limited use.

Both Ukrainians that Russians think exactly the contrary about the MT-12 AT gun. First ones have constantly kept them in service and the second ones are re-introducing them back as a STANDARD weapon i.e. they would kept it in their regular units even after the war would be finished. both of them have infact found confirmed also during such conflict that although its own APFSDS rounds has not anymore the capacity of engage modern tanks on the frontal arc this doesn't modify very much its own utility as even before they were not intended to be used in such a way but in flanking ambushes leaving instead to the heavy ATGM (that are part of the same speciality i.e. Artillery and Missile Troops) the head on engagements.

So, they've made something like World War 2 Germany's Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe or Hummel? It seems to have the same deficiencies, notably uncovered fighting compartment that makes the artillery crew vulnerable to the weather and shrapnel. Still, it gets a powerful gun to the battlefront quickly and allows for a quicker "shoot and scoot" to avoid counter-battery fire.
I would say that it is a nice improvisation. The limits will be that it is primarily direct attack and would face difficulty in areas where advanced ATGMs were present. The aiming systems would be a bit crude as well. Seems like something that Ukraine could do with lots of obsolete guns and recoiless rifles.
The UAF use apps like Kropyva and Armor which contain artillery tables for all kinds of ordnance. They assist with indirect fire for anything heavier than a machine gun. I'm sure this vehicle will be used as a 'pocket SPG'.

Given the limited elevation capability and shell without variable propellant that means that it would struggle with having a large range of choices to target the shells. There is nothing wrong with that. It is just a direct fire weapon. This is not magic.

May it and its crew(s) have good hunting. I was wondering what the 'chute /' exhaust' is on the left side. It seems to come from just in front of the fighting compartment and end just above the track.
I would like to know how they can maintain the engine since the cannon barrel seems to be above the top hatch for the engine. They might be able to rotate the gun enough to the right so they can open it but I dont know. But if they cant open the top hatch they would have to service the engine through the inside which is possible for some maintenance (There are detachable panels to get access to the engine from the crew compartment and cabin). Or would they just remove the gun for engine maintenance?

Ukraine has captured so much Russian equipment that it can now afford to spend weeks modifying and improvise entirely new weapons of a special purpose nature. This is an intriguing commentary not just on Ukrainian success but Russian failures as well. This is a palpable indication that Ukraine has achieved irreversible momentum. Every MT-LB gun carrier is just another demonstration superior soviet design lol. this shows superior ruggedness and adaptability of soviet designs over western ones. meanwhile every Western system needs years of training just to know what button not to push. also i'd say the fall of the shots is hitting a pretty wide area. so this will be useless against mobile targets or well fortified ones as the RF will have much more counter battery on call.
The crew don't look hugely convinced by the system and I would have concerns about its ability to safely and accurately repeat serials when it comes to infantry calling down fire missions as it won't stay in one place when fired due to no hydraulic buffer. It's got uses in the direct fire role as an improvised assault gun.
I think it's okay as a stopgap measure or for second line TDF troops in case of enemy forces that somehow got behind the front lines. Definitely has room for improvement though.

for the MG mount , the MT-LB already has one built in, with the little MG turret mounted on the forward right as for counter battery protection first the issue would be finding enough armour plate to make the roof secondly you can see the built up shields and the gun shield don't cover entirely the crew when they are riding standing, so adding a roof might complicate operations additionally the guns emits a lot of fumes from the breech end, so a closed compartment would quite quickly become unlivable if it was a purpose build vehicle, i would agree, but they are quite literally welding a field gun on top of a MT-LB, so they have to work with limitations of both platforms
Great follow up video! Ukraine is starving for artillery and tanks and desperately needs to fill the gap! Too much attention is paid to it's use as an anti-tank weapon against MBT-this gun can destroy everything else. Ukraine is finally putting anti-aircraft, recoilless guns and anti-tank guns on APC's and trucks-make defensive weapons(waiting for their prey.....) into offensive weapons to apply pressure on Russia. They need to proliferate the guns on the front lines to keep pressure on Russia. I have seen too many video's of Ukrainian solders complaining they can't punch back at incoming fire.
Yes it was, it was described as a tank destroyer by UAF press but Ukrainian soldiers I've spoken to say they're mixed role with them often being used as an assault gun.
I can tell you with certainly as I had family in the defense industry that the 100mm Anti armor/air gun is very good. This is a nice way to to a spg with the mobile army of today with limited resources. Excellent job Ukraine!!!

Two biggest dangers to them are being counterbatteried and dismounted infantry.
for the MG mount , the MT-LB already has one built in, with the little MG turret mounted on the forward right
as for counter battery protection
first the issue would be finding enough armour plate to make the roof
secondly you can see the built up shields and the gun shield don't cover entirely the crew when they are riding standing, so adding a roof might complicate operations
additionally the guns emits a lot of fumes from the breech end, so a closed compartment would quite quickly become unlivable
if it was a purpose build vehicle, i would agree, but they are quite literally welding a field gun on top of a MT-LB, so they have to work with limitations of both platforms

Great follow up video! Ukraine is starving for artillery and tanks and desperately needs to fill the gap! Too much attention is paid to it's use as an anti-tank weapon against MBT-this gun can destroy everything else. Ukraine is finally putting anti-aircraft, recoilless guns and anti-tank guns on APC's and trucks-make defensive weapons(waiting for their prey.....) into offensive weapons to apply pressure on Russia. They need to proliferate the guns on the front lines to keep pressure on Russia. I have seen too many video's of Ukrainian solders complaining they can't punch back at incoming fire.

Yes it was, it was described as a tank destroyer by UAF press but Ukrainian soldiers I've spoken to say they're mixed role with them often being used as an assault gun.

I can tell you with certainly as I had family in the defense industry that the 100mm Anti armor/air gun is very good. This is a nice way to to a spg with the mobile army of today with limited resources. Excellent job Ukraine!!!
