I was asked to switch seat by the flight attendants once so a mother could sit with her daughter. I was travelling alone and consented. Got stuck in a middle seat in the very back row next to the toilets (which smelled like poo the entire flight...). When I walked past what would have been my seat I saw that the daughter was not the 8-year old I had imagined, but a late teen or early twenty something. Totally agree with the "Your lack of planning does not make it my emergency" philosophy. If they can give me a sob story (emergency booking like a funeral or similar and it's a young kid), I'll consider it but my default answer is now a hard "No." That mother-daughter couple could have given up the daugher's good seat next to my original seat to someone who had gotten booked in the back next to the toilets if they actually just wanted to sit together; clearly the primary goal was to get better seats...
