    I have worked for TOMS briefly in LA for temp part-time work and it was pretty cool. I love their business model and not only did they sell shoes, they sold glasses, bags and coffee. Each department had a purpose. Backpacks were to help stop bullying, glasses help give sight saving surgery to people in poor countries, and coffee helped give water to those in need.

      jLaBlanc Hi! I’m glad you replied so I can clarify no one wants to take your guns away - I think that’s a big part of the problem we have going on in the US, misinformation and misunderstanding. As an advocate for stopping gun violence, I’m simply asking (begging) for tighter gun laws and precautions to help PREVENT guns from getting into the wrong hands. I realize a lot of arguments say “people will still get guns even with tighter laws” and I agree, but the thing is, we have to start somewhere! I’m with you, I think kind, responsible individuals should be able to own guns. But as someone who sees and has lived through a mass shooting, I want things to change - and I hope you do too. If not for yourself, for your future (or current) children.
      Also I think mental health issues in the US are a massive part of the problem, but I won’t blab on for your sake. Hopefully that helps clear things up. Take care!

      What change could be made? Guns are easy to get. The only thing strict gun laws is doing is making it harder for law abiding citizens to get them. Criminals will get guns regardless. They pour in from Mexico from china all the time without serial numbers. We need more law abiding citizens to carry guns so that when evil tries to strike it can be stopped.

    • @QuotingCourtney

      Mad Media Like I said, I believe we have to start somewhere. You can have your opinion, and I can have mine without us belittling each other or saying the other is wrong. I hear you, and I will consider that information! But to me, it’s not a waste of time to try, I’d rather spend my time and energy fighting for something that could even save one life than not trying at all.

    All too often these days we get a little cynical, jaded, and second-guessy when it comes to social justice/international development/etc initiatives, the quality of the impact that they have, and the motivations behind why people choose to get involved. There is value to being educated and "picky" about what we lift up as being "worthy", but let's not forget to also intentionally celebrate the enduring spirit of helping others and support those who, from a baseline, just really want to have a positive impact.
    This is fantastic.

    $5M is going...where exactly? Other than police, who respond after the violence has been perpetrated, what organization is working to end gun violence? Background checks are performed nationwide, except in cases where individuals sell guns to individuals, which can never be regulated. As a gun owner and shooter, I am in favor of ANYTHING that will curb these public mass casualty incidents, but I have yet to hear one single thing that will legitimately make a difference.

      Not universal background checks.
      Background checks are only run through licensed firearm dealers. It is at gun shows and through private sales that background checks are not federally required. Universal background checks would close what is considered the “private sale” loophole.
      Having universal background checks would require almost all firearm transactions to be recorded in the NICS.

      Instead, it'll go to lobbying for gun laws that impact those that follow laws. Even HuffPost, the most liberal of sites, has published prof of actual programs that reduce gun violence. 0% of those programs involve passing gun control laws. None of those programs will be implemented with this 5 million.

      Does it matter that there is no such thing as "gun violence"? It is a meaningless buzz phrase like "assault weapon" or "police brutality" and has no universal definition in a court of law.

    While I appreciate the willingness to stand up and do something to make the country safer, we really should focus our efforts on things that have already been proven to work, and shut down all the things that have been proven NOT to work.
    So, what has been proven to work? The CDC did a study under Obama which that administration had them bury until the Trump administration finally unburied (this is not an endorsement of Trump, just an indicator of the timeline). This study showed that armed citizens (non-police) used firearms 2.5 MILLION times EVERY YEAR to stop crimes in progress or prevent a crime from happening. When the people are armed, they are SAFE. Don't we want the people to be safe?
    Okay. Now, what has been proven NOT to work? Sadly, the very thing Blake is pushing ... background checks! The last big shooter in California, just like the vast majority of shooters like him, PASSED the background check. Background checks can only stop a VERY small number of people who already know they can't pass a background check. Those individuals will simply buy, steal, or otherwise acquire a firearm via one of half a dozen methods that can't be stopped via background check.
    They can buy one on the black market (those guys don't check). They can steal one. They can BUILD one from an 80% blank and untraceable spare parts they can get off the internet. Soon they'll be able to 3D print them from the comfort of their own homes. The simple truth of this matter is that there is no way for a background check to stop someone who wants to get a gun. It's NEVER worked. Why are we trying so very hard to push an entirely impotent policy?
    Back to what does work: armed law abiding citizens. The demographic in our country with the lowest occurrence of criminal activity is concealed carry holders. Their rate of committing crime is a fraction of even that of the police ... which means if you're looking at a cop and a citizen CC holder, the cop is far more likely to be a criminal. So, how do we use this to our advantage?
    First, we scrap Gun Free Zones (GFZ). The only thing a GFZ has ever done is ensure everyone was easy to kill by disarming the innocent. If we can't get the political backbone to abolish them, we need to make an exception that specifies licensed CC holders can carry within GFZs just like the police can. This means SOMEONE has a chance to stand up and protect the innocent, no matter where the shooters decide to go.
    Statistics show that when a shooting occurs in a GFZ, the average number of people who die is 16, but if the shooting occurs in a place where citizens are permitted to carry, and there is just ONE person armed who can defend himself, the number of people who die in a shooting drops to just 2.5. THIS is a real solution.
    For the same $5Million Blake is donating to push an impotent policy, we could train, license, and arm as many as 10K people all over the country to simply do what they already do every day ... but do it with a firearm on their side so that if something happens, they can do something about it immediately. Why? Because it works. It's been proven to work millions of times every year.
    If we wanted to target this donation to really protect our children, we could make it a grant specifically for teachers who would volunteer to protect their students. Many of our teachers are former military who are already competent marksmen with experience. This is a strategy that has ALREADY been proven to work. Why is doing what works so controversial while doing what has been proven NOT to work is regarded as "common sense"?

    And que the water works when he starts to talk about the cause. You do have to pass a background check in most states to purchase a gun. My 1911 that sits on my night stand, with a round in the chamber has yet to jump up and kill me or one of my 4 other roommates, and neither have my other 3 guns. Guns aren’t the problem people are. We need more mental health support.

      Michelle M tell me where and how money has resolved gun violence or violence in general for that matter. Tell me how you’re gonna avoid a person from killing another person whether it be a gun, knife, a bus, a plane or any other object out there.

    • @jmc224
      @jmc224 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michelle M you obviously havent been watching the news and media. Paris? London? Japan? Attacks everyday that doesnt involve the use of a handgun. You’re so set on the fact that the gun is the only weapon of choice. There are more car deaths than gun deaths. Even if a mentally unstable person didnt have access to a gun, theyd find a way to cause harm to someone else. You need to analyze and assess all options before opening your uneducated mouth and spews out nonsense. Guns kill people, yes. But the gun is not the one that chose to be in the hands of the mentally unstable and/or corrupt individual that physically pulled the trigger. Someone who is honestly out there with the intent to kill will find a way. Donating money to a cause like fighting cancer or illegal human trafficking would be far better.

    • @TexZenMaster
      @TexZenMaster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Michelle M It depends on what you mean by "gun violence"; Since there is no actual definition. Gun suicides? I'd suggest everyone stop being so apathetic and vile to each other like you just were to me. Gun accidents? Always remember the 4 rules to gun safety and it will never happen. Gun use in defense? This is not a problem. Gun murders? >88% of gun murders are with illegal guns and are not subject to legislation or restriction. Only increased law enforcement can solve this. Gun sentience? This doesn't exist.
      Tell me which of these you're talking about and we can discuss it further.

    • @jmc224
      @jmc224 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michelle M i could ask you the same question. Wtf are you doing to end “gun violence”? And when the hell was this convo about bombing? Its about how the heck money can end gun violence? Will it physically end gun violence? As long as guns are around, there will always be gun violence. There will always be violence for that matter. That is my point. Youre the one that triggered and approached my opinion as if you were ready for a fight. Fuck your baiting.
