Bo Nix’s in-depth scouting report and how much arm strength matters for a franchise QB

  • The 2024 NFL Draft is in the books and opinions on the Denver Broncos selection of Bo Nix, 12th overall in the first round have been mixed. We look at what makes Nix different from most first-round quarterbacks and dig into his true strengths and weaknesses. How can we separate the accuracy numbers from the Oregon offense and the much more inaccurate version we saw at Auburn? Nix’s most common knock seems to be the deep ball, but where does he really stack up against QB prospects over the last 5-10 years? And when we talk about arm strength what are we talking about? Is it deep-ball accuracy, is it raw arm strength? Is it zip over the middle or talent to get it to the sidelines with ease? All that and more as we get to know Bo Nix in detail as a prospect and what it means for the Broncos long-term.

Caleb threw a higher % of his passes behind/@ the LOS than Nix, yet that's not seen as a negative. CW played against the same Pac12 defenses as Nix, yet it's only a negative for Nix. Win or Lose, Nix still played great against top 50 ranked defenses. CW gets crushed and plays bad vs top ranked D. PFF has Nix as a better QB than CW in almost all categories. What am I missing? There seems to be an ulterior motive when it comes to not liking Nix.

I agree that for Bo Nix to be an all pro he has to be an elite level processor (and fix that footwork at the top of his drop). I think the film shows he’s by far the best processor in the draft

The whole "Nix needs to be in the conversation for the best QB in the NFL to be a success" argument is silly to me. Sure, being an elite QB helps. As far as im concerned, if hes a top 3 processor and accurate QB, i dont give a shit if he can throw 60-70 yards. Or hit the guy on the sideline. Just use the whole field and I'll be happy. Sean is gonna get his guys open and Bo will either execute or fall flat. Simple as that

You know who was really good at those outside deep throws, Russell Wilson, and it didn't help him because he was a bad processor and took too long to make decisions. Playing QB in the NFL is multi-faceted. Bo being a great processor may elevate him past a lot of these guys, but only time will tell.

Bo was the right pick and not just because he was the only one left. Daniels #1, Nix #2, Penix #3 imo on the Broncos board. Caleb Williams was probably #1 from a talent standpoint but he worries me with his intangibles. Daniels, Nix and Penix breathe football imo. I can't disagree more with Henry's take on Bo.

I'll trust Payton's judgement on his arm strength, after coaching one of the greatest ever in Brees, im sure he knows if a QB is capable or not.

So Bo Nix is average to good in his traits but needs to be an elite processor to take him to the next level (which is why we drafted him). I don't see the issue. Sean Payton's idea QB is exactly that and that's the way he'll be coached and molded. The scheme and play calling won't be designed with the expectations of him to be an elite arm talent, but to be an elite processor. If he performs at that level or not time will tell.

FromLombardyland. Starr was never a long ball thrower though he had a few!! But he picked teams apart in the w0-30 yard zone. Patience!! Let the coaches bring him along.!! The rough diamond needs polish\\! Remember Elway took a few years to come along!!

I appreciate that when faced with stats, facts, anecdotal evidence and contrary information that Hank quadruple downed on his Nix eval that was already 10 miles away from the consensus.

Don’t care if they only throw 5 yard passes. If SP and Bo do that and put together 6-7 minute drives that keep Mahomes on the sideline then we’re golden.

The dude in the pink ball cap starts talking at 8:10 about how Nix was in a different system at Auburn than he was at Oregon, speculating about taking his mediocre Auburn years out of the evaluation & wondering what that would do for his perception as a reach. I don't know where he's getting this idea from that Nix played in a different system at Oregon because Nix played in EXACTLY the same system for 4 of his 5 years in college. From 2019-2020 he played for Gus Malzahn who runs a No Huddle-Hurry Up version of the Air Raid. In 2021 Malzahn got fired & Auburn brought in Bryan Harsin from Boise State who threw out the spread & installed NFL pro passing sets. Nix responded with a poor year in which his numbers slipped across the board & he was temporarily benched. He described his year playing in that system as "a nightmare" & jumped to Oregon. Why Oregon? Because he was following his former OC under Malzahn to the Ducks. Kenny Dillingham ran the offense for Malzahn with Nix & when Harsin was hired he bolted for the PAC 12. Nix followed him & played in the Dillngham offense in 2022. Then Dillingham got the Arizona State job for 2023 & Oregon hired Will Stein as OC under HC Dan Lanning. Stein got the job on the strength of a promise to continue with Dillingham's offense which he did.
So in the only experience Nix has had outside an Air Raid spread with pace as a definitive advantage, he struggled & left it behind as soon as he could. The surrounding talent at Oregon & the heavy emphasis in the PAC 12 of putting the best athletes on offense has something to do with Nix' massive statistical explosion. We'll see how Nix responds to Payton & what is possibly the most complex offense in the NFL but the idea that he's a slam dunk to start as a rookie needs to be re-evaluated. The primary factor that was different at Oregon was the surrounding talent he played with.

It's fairly obvious that the endless number of podcast / NFL analysts actually have no idea how to look for or evaluate football players . Bo Nix, when evaluated by someone who understands the game of football, stands out as the best quarterback in the 2024 draft. Every other quarterback in the NFL draft besides JJ McCarthy look for and thrived in broken plays. These players almost never adapt to an NFL system. Yes, some of the quarterbacks were freaks of nature regarding athleticism, but their success all came from broken plays, which is impossible to mirror in the nfl!
