A brilliant performance, as usual by Karen. It is important to say that this is not a traditional song but a modern composition whose composer/author is very much alive. Brendan Graham is the person responsible and he must be Ireland's most brilliant living songwriter - responsible for two of Ireland's Eurovision victories, wrote "You raise me up" and a song on the birth of Prince William's first born, even though he is not the poet laureate!
I've been listening to Karen Matheson for years, and each time I hear her beautiful voice I'm more moved. Her interpretative skill and sensibility are a wonder and a lovely gift to all.
Thank you Karen for this song, and thank you u tube and uploader. My daughter, beloved Camille, died in my arms nine years ago and this beautiful song brings her so close to me. I cry every time and it's good! You share your gift with all your listeners!
Dear Jean-Marie, I cannot think of anything worse for a parent. I hope the pain is a little less hard now. Your beloved daughter was obviously a blessing to you when she was here and I hope the memory of all she brought you provides a constant blessing now, and every day of your life. My best wishes to you.
The bairns that lie un-mourned and un-named in the unmarked residential schools graves in Canada rip my heart to it's core. We don't deserve forgiveness without recognizing them and their families torn apart..
It isn't Canada alone. In many African countries mothers cry for the same reason -- bairn=pikin, dom, ... No one deserves forgiveness who participates in such silent horror...
Karen can sing absolutely anything, and as for the geezer on the Ullian, Ronan - KILLER - the sounds are really ethereal. If this song doesn't move you, you're DEAD !!!!!
+kenny maclean I agree completely, and I'll tell you I'm not moved easily. Today's the first time I hear this song, and not understanding a word of it, the second it started playing I just had to close my eyes, and I listened to them... Aside from classical music, there is no modern music that touches me as much as this kind of music, Gaelic words and tunes from Karen and Capercaillie.
Thanks all of you , that's the most emotional song I have ever heard and played and sung with such dignity , I must wipe the tears from my eyes now . Amazing Karen and the rest of the band.
What a beautiful voice! Who knew Caltic sounds so good! The song you sang yesterday at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's service at St Giles Cathedral was a splendour to listen to and so touchy given the sad occasion too.. would love to make it available on the platform 🙏
Still-born, and unbaptized little babies, who would never "SEE THE FACE OF GOD" because of not being cleansed from Original Sin, according to The Catholic Churche's teaching about God(!!!) were buried in this site. Karen Matheson's rendering is beautiful, transmitting all the love, sorrow and pathos contained in the lyrics of this song. Heartbreak!!!
+Peter MacKay Sir, I dare you to read Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking. Mid Career I did a second fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford in the San Francisco bay area. We were very fortunate to hear a lecture by Iris in an intimate setting followed by a nice dinner with her. I thought she was a brilliant and beautiful woman who was much affected by the research she had done for the book. I later learnt that under a great flood of hate mail from Japan, she took her own life, much like many of the survivors of the Rape. For understanding, I'm a Brit with many family ties to Asia. My grandfather and two uncles died defending Hong Kong against the Imperial Japanese. On the other side of the family, my grandfather was created a Captain-Surgeon in the British Army and sent off to India to fight with the Chindits, and later Viscount (Fieldmarshal) Bill Slimm's march to Burma. His was a war of keeping men going and liberating camp after camp of Japanese prisoners treated in the most bestial manner. After the surrender he made his way to Hong Kong, spending ten years helping rebuild the community of what we now call Hongkongers, among these rebuilding "Mary's" the public hospital there. For this he was knighted by our King. He did not talk much about the war until I was older and he was near the end of a long life. The stories about the camps were chilling, frightening and disgusting. I have a hard time understanding how and why Imperial Japan could create such a vicious and bloodthirsty Army. Iris Chang asked the same question. Regards, Hugh D'Aubry FRCS
Matheson is lovely as usual. A real wonder in this world . She is just great! I must wonder who is the Harpist? She is truly beautiful, and the the Flutist and pipes player is exquisite!

Thank you for providing the lyrics, and most especially, the translation. I thought it was beautiful before; it is all the more powerful knowing what it means.
Thank you James, for the translation...I have made some alterations to it, to get the meter right. Though from the start it fitted very well with the music....one of these days I'll record the english version of it, see if that works :-) I'll give you the credits for the words though :-) cheeers, Kees
I simply copied the text from an internet site that gives Gaelic songs with translations. I hope that is not violating copyright laws. I think I should perhaps have given the link, but no one gets money for making comments on TH-cam videos.
I just downloaded song will listen later- Karen usually sings in Scottish Gaelic, but you have written down lyrics in Irish (which I can reaad better).
Hi James, finally had some time to do a recording..... worked out pretty well :-) here's a try out of the song soundcloud.com/kees-knegt/crucan-na-bpaiste

Quentin Holt The point of this song was the increased heart-ache with the loss of a child when that child had not been baptised. The rule of the Catholic Church, that such a child could not be buried in consecrated ground (the grounds of a church, with other family members) added enormously to the pain of loss. Crucán na bPáiste was the place set aside for such burials, without headstones or any mark. This burial plot is normally called "Killeen", elsewhere in Ireland. In TH-cam th-cam.com/video/g7LrYOS-Qk0/w-d-xo.html Brendan Graham, the writer, gives a comprehensive introduction to this song.
Même sans comprendre votre langue, votre chanson à bouleversée ma vie. C'est absolument magnifique .Merci
A brilliant performance, as usual by Karen.

One of the best voices in the wotld, i could listen to her all day.
In these rather dark times, it's moments like this that give you hope there's something redeeming about our species. What a performance...
A lot darker times now x
it's so beautiful it wipes my heart out
Stunningly beautiful. More power to you, Karen.
The loss of one's child sums it up for me in this Gaelic Lament for Children.
I've been listening to Karen Matheson for years, and each time I hear her beautiful voice I'm more moved. Her interpretative skill and sensibility are a wonder and a lovely gift to all.

@Manual Capanna Go away!
The bairns that lie un-mourned and un-named in the unmarked residential schools graves in Canada rip my heart to it's core. We don't deserve forgiveness without recognizing them and their families torn apart..
Thank the Catholic Church for abusing all those innocent kids and KILILING them.
no wonder the native Canadians burnt their chapels.
It isn't Canada alone. In many African countries mothers cry for the same reason -- bairn=pikin, dom, ... No one deserves forgiveness who participates in such silent horror...
Music to send tears running down the face, unbelievingly beautiful.
Really moving. Tears come up. And thank you, the accompaniment is lovely too.
Karen can sing absolutely anything, and as for the geezer on the Ullian, Ronan - KILLER - the sounds are really ethereal. If this song doesn't move you, you're DEAD !!!!!
+kenny maclean I agree completely, and I'll tell you I'm not moved easily.

Aside from classical music, there is no modern music that touches me as much as this kind of music, Gaelic words and tunes from Karen and Capercaillie.
Moved me to tears, soul music...
Karen Matheson's voice is almost enough to make me believe in God. What else could create such beautiful perfection?
Thanks all of you , that's the most emotional song I have ever heard and played and sung with such dignity , I must wipe the tears from my eyes now . Amazing Karen and the rest of the band.
Thank you - goodness, you people have soul...
This is perhaps the most brilliant yet saddest song I've ever heard and what beautiful musicians, all!
Harrowing uilleann pipes. Masterfully played.
I've never heard an angel sing, but it can't be any more beautiful than this. I've been a fan for years.
What a voice - incredible!
Without understanding one word of this song ( thanks for the translation) the performance makes you feel the pain. Sad and beautiful!
Every time I hear this, I take something from it. Surely this is what music should be about?
Reaching perfection
Quite incredible
makes the uilleann pipes sound like heaven, incredible
Well, THIS one also "slayed" me -- such good and personal and emotional and spiritual music throughout the TransAtlantic series!!!
Still-born, and unbaptized little babies, who would never "SEE THE FACE OF GOD" because of not being cleansed from Original Sin, according to The Catholic Churche's teaching about God(!!!) were buried in this site. This send shivers down my spine... stunningly beautiful!
My . . . What beauty. Every note, every expression was perfect. My, oh my!
Powerful and hauntingly beautiful
One of the greatest singer of Keltia ...
...was für eine schöne Stimme - wow....!!!! SUPER !!!!💃
What a voice karen has Sean connery was right touched by God 😊
Beautiful shivers up your spine voice
I adore her! Her rendition of Aye Fond Kiss can make me cry everytime! :) Gorgeous voice! I recently bought her cd Still Time. It is fabulous! :)
You should also check out “Lassie wi the Lint White Locks” Rabbie Burns and also sang by Karen - just beautiful.
@@stonemarten1400 I love that one too! :)
Stunning ❤️ Song tcx
Had me weeping for the death of all innocents…the world over…an absolutely beautiful song from an incomparable, uncompromising singer...
impossible not to, beautiful

Peter, I can only agree with your conclusion. God Save the Queen, (God Save Us All).
Simply beautiful x
The best song of loss is silence... but this lament comes close..
So wonderful!... Karen! Hope to meet you..one day! And I will play the keyboards just for you!🤗❤️👍🙋🏻♂️
amazingly beautiful. How can a song that so few understand touch so many?
One of the saddest songs I've heard. The child's graveyard she sings of isn't to far from me. Terrible what happened in those days.
Matheson is lovely as usual. A real wonder in this world . She is just great! I must wonder who is the Harpist? She is truly beautiful, and the the Flutist and pipes player is exquisite!
+Allen Griffin Allen, the harpist is Catriona McKay, and the flute and pipe-player Ronan Browne....
Beautiful!
I don't know what she's saying but it's so beautiful and I can't stop crying
+Robin Roland If you knew what she was singing you.d cry even more.there are translations elsewhere in the comments.
Beautiful and meaningful melody
I need to sleep but I can't turn this off till Karen is finished singing. 😢
This plays in my head at night 💔
How beautiful
beautiful voice!
Perfect
Glorious x
The little red haired girl that should have been a great great great grandmother.
Beautiful Song Cuz.
Very nice ❤
작은 십자가(Crucan Na bPaiste)
RIP wee one.
KaarenKarennnnKareeeen!
Part of this is the same tune as The First Noel, the origin of which is Cornwall, possibly based on an old folk song.
I would really like to play and sing for you! 🙋🏻♂️❤️
This a very sad song, in particular if one knows the meaning.
Is briste mo chroí Broken my heart
Is uaigneach mo shlí Lonely my life
Is mo stóirín in a luí is mé cráite With my darling child lying here and me tormented
'S é deireadh mo shaol It is the end of my world
Is mo chailín beag rua My little red-haired girl
Sínte i gCrucán na bPáiste Laid out in Crucán na bPáiste
Ni fheicfidh sí arís She will not see again
An drúcht ar an bhféar The dew on the grass
Nó an sneachta i ngleannta Mhaamtrasna Nor the snow in the glens of Maamtrasna
Gan ghrian ar a h-aghaidh No sun on her face
Gan ceol binn na n-éan No sweet song of the birds
Ach an chré fuar i gCrucán na bPáiste Only the cold earth of Crucán na bPáiste
Curfá: Chorus:
In ainm an Athair In the name of the Father
Is in ainm an Mhic And in the name of the Son
Is a Mháithrín atá lán de ghrásta And Mother Mary full of grace
In ainm an Spioraid Naomh In the name of the Holy Spirit
Ná fág me beo Don't leave me alive
Is mo mháinlín i gCrucán bPáiste With my little angel in Crucán na bPáiste
Is buartha na sléibhte There is sadness on the mountains
Is tá mairg ar an Mask Anger on the Mask
Is olc mise gan i bheith sábháilte But much worse am I that didn’t save her
Is an fhad a bhéas mé beo And for the time I am alive
Ní sheasfaidh mé ar fhód Never more will I stand
