- Winner of the NZ TV Award 2017 'Best Pasifika Programme'. #TalesOfTime Coco Doco Oscar Kightley is in Samoa to explore his Solomon Island Ancestry. He discovers how these 'Tama Uli' or 'Black People' as they're also known, came to Samoa over 100 years ago. He also learns about the legacy they left behind and the difficulties they still face today.

Orla J. Solomon Islands descendants in Fiji and Australia came to the Solomons last year as part of their search of their motherland. Most of the black birding slaves were from the island of Malaita, and malaita is happy to welcome it's people.

My great grandfather was taken from the Solomon islands as a boy to work in samoa. His marriage to my samoan great grandmother was the first of its kind under Samoan law and he was the last Solomon who came on that vessel at that time to pass away. He was over 100 years old when he passed away.

I remember in 2009 whilst researching Pacific and Polynesian contribution to Australian society....let me tell you how angry, shocked and just very emotional I was when I came across black birding....I am a very proud Samoan living in Australia. These issues need to be raised I firmly believe that. I'm Samoan 100%....A bit of this and a bit of that but 100% Samoan lol...lol.. im proud to have artists such as Tama Uli, Forcing Samoa to see a true reflection of its Past and current prejudices. Good on you Oscar. I'm over the double standards in Samoa. you even get it with nz Samoans. They think just because we live in Australia we some how have no clue of what it is to be Samoan or we have magically forgotten... So you see its a trickle affect....Black Brown Yellow Light brown....Samoa is diverse...embrace it. Let's all get behind Sogi and make some noise because let's face it, this is just the beginning your village could be next.

Wow! I had no idea blackbirding was a part of Samoa's history. This is shameful!! The ancestors of the people of Sogi were forcibly removed from their homes, their land & loved ones and treated like animals. I'm appalled that the Samoan government is doing the exact same thing to the people of Sogi in this day in age.

Shining a light exposes facts about our history but as Oscar mentioned, we don’t dwell on the past, it’s all about now and the future. Nonetheless, the government’s actions were dishonorable, as proven by its current state and the current caretaker portraying a dictator role instead of stepping down as Prime Minister with dignity and honor.

Can we just appreciate how amazing this doco is? As a teen nz raised pacific islander Ive never even heard about this part of our Island culture. I wish I learnt about it in history class while i learnt about trades/slaves in the all over the world dating centuries ago, never did it occur it happened in the islands too regarding melanesians and polynesians. So sad im glad they are fighting to stay you can see the emotions and determination in his eyes, no amount of money is equal to the land your parents sacrificed for you ❤ really sparked a fire in me being mela/polynesian ive experienced racism by my own kind

That photograph I recognised this person at 0:08 my Great great great Grandfather is in this photograph in this as well but he is not shown his name was Josè Pereira who was of African Portuguese Samoan heritage he worked for Godffrey and sons which was a German copra firm during German colonisation in Samoa where alot of Melenesian people were taken to Samoa to work the copra fields I never realised the true significance of this photograph until now
I am familiar with most of the Solomon descendants in Samoa. We had quite a lot of brothers and sisters who played a huge role in my great grandparents, grandmother's siblings, mother's siblings' lives, and then ours. Over time, we have considered them aiga after their many contributions to our family in Afega, Samoa. I love my tagata 'uli family!

Samoans need to understand that discrimination based on the color of our skin was brought to us by missionaries and europeans. It was the Eurpeans who divided us into Polynesia and Melanesia. Our Fijian brothers are as much a part of us as we are of them despite what palagis tell us. We are all tagata pasefika. Europeans and Australians black birded our polynesian ancestors, but we cannot hold a grudge because we were gullible to allow it to happen to our brothers and sisters. It is time for us to love and educate each other and move forward not as samoans, tongans, tahitians or fijians, but as Tagata Pasefika.

Mr Levi (was teacher at Leifiifi Junior Secondary School in late 90s), Mr Tokuma (was teacher at Apia Middle Primary School in the early 90s), some class mates from late 80s to late 90s; Kevita with the ponytails, KHart, and Peretiso...still remember them..great kids
Mr Tokuma spends some of his time is Lower Hutt, NZ..Great man..

I have Solomon blood my great grandfather was full Solomon who was brought over for slavery with his brother and sister but his brother and sister went back to Solomon.

Great story, I just realized samoa has a big racist problem. I mean I've always learned about the German, British n NZ in Intermediate school back in samoa but never about the Tama Uli which are a part of our History.I've lived in samoa for 20years. My dad is a descendant of German n My mother is a descendant of the Tama Uli, her dad was fluent in Solomon Language. Alot of the Solomon descendants live in the village of Aele today.

Nope, not a huge racist problem. The Samoan government is just stupid for trying to reclaim the land. If it was land given by Samoan chiefs, the chiefs were never treat them like this. So you see, it’s the stupid government’s lust for land that is the problem, not Samoans in general.
Wow. Thank you for sharing this video. It was sad to watch this in 2017, that Samoans in Samoa are being unfairly treated by the govt of Samoa. This doesn't surprise me tho, I know Samoans are a proud group of people, but even they mistreat and ridicule their own people for having dark skin color. Racism for sure. Glad this video has been filmed so that many become aware of social injustices among our own people.

I’m truly amazed at this finding this out 5 years later is a definite shock doing all the research I can do to see if they still are there and what happened.really wish things like this were told to us in school and what can be done if anything can be done at this point😢

As we know Samoa is one of Demoracy Country,,and I believe all human being we're in Samoa before 1962 was automatically resident,and they surely have freedom and right,I feel sorry about these people,I still remember the guy from this family in Sogi,his name is Tokuma we went together in School in Malifa and it's more than 20years I think,I suppose to love these people,we all human being and never never think like racial conflicts.

This is not the Samoa that I was raised under. They are more Samoan then I am. The government there needs to pay attention. They need to see that they are splitting Samoa. This man and his family have every right to stay. The government searching for some loophole to say they can not stay !!!! Omg. Not the true Samoan culture. True Samoan is who this family in Sogi is. Shame on the government. If the family say No. Then leave them alone. It’s called Not for sale!!!! Don’t cheat the family of there rights !!!!

I have known some in my village and my congregation straighten them off,, well some of then to not call them meaulis (dark ones) but call them by their names and family name. Love and respect them uncondionality.

"Tama Uli" refers to melanesians or dark skin people of pacific origin.
O le "Afelika" means someone who is of 1st generation African heritage.
"Meauli" means the "black diaspora" or African descendants via transatlantic slave trade, people refer themselves as just "Black" who now have a distinct culture from Africans due to adaptation. The difference is labeling one "African" and the other "an African". Both not to be confused. The word "mea" ex "mea'ai" ,meatau, meafai" means variety. People with very little knowledge of their own culture can be confused with the context of their language.

Just last night I watched the dawn raids documentary and it’s sadly ironic that Samoans are not immune to imposing the same treatment on people that they endured in NZ. Sounds similar to dragons of Samoa about the Chinese labours. Breaks my heart for our Solomon and Melanesian bro/sis were basically slaves, in the old times. There were always story’s about my Chinese family but very short n confusing as hell, was not allowed to Talk about it. I actually was born and raised in Samoa and never knew that some Samoans had foreign ancestry. I just thought they spent too much time in the sun. I always did used to wonder why my dad's side had darker skin and my mum side had lighter skin. Now I know my mom side mixed with some American with their village being close to a former US airbase and my dad had an Asian and Melanesian side.
I grew up knowing this man and his family this is sad and upsetting too hear what his family is going through...and the fuckn government to have the nerve to offer 3000 is a slap in the face wtf!!!

This is interesting, I have been looking for my Grandmother’s ancestors for a long time. She died when my father was a young child and doesn’t remember her. She was dark skin woman(Fijian) named-Vaitupu Soli from Safune I believe, married to a Methodist Rev. Ropati. Her relative married Olaf Fredrick Nelson which she named my father after. If anyone have any info I would appreciated.

I don't think it's racism or samoans not liking solomon people, I grew up in sogi, I used to live in a company home what was called then " Westec "my grandfathr & father ran the transport part of westec it's gone now, but solomon people were left alone and were free just like all samoans. It's the government who wants them out now, cos they want to build a new wharf & hotels there, my father is half solomon samoan, I grew up in sogi now reside in australia
