    Well. I am one of your 64 year old students😂. I was looking for a craft to share with my granddaughters tomorrow. They look forward to our craft session. I have been crafting since I was a little girl because of my grandma. I have never stopped creating. I hope to keep the fun going with my grandchildren. This one is fun and they can make many more, by them selves when I go home. Your tutorial was perfect for me to duplicate. Ha! Hopefully ! Thanks so VERY MUCH. Most sincerely, Gods bless and his best to you.

    This is an outstandingly clear tutorial. Thank you! I've struggled with the folds because like you said, other tutorials start out flat and then have you crease in both directions. I couldn't follow how to fold the book up. Your "little bird" method, folding first THEN attaching, and only folding in one direction so the physics moves the paper, is great pedagogy. Appreciate it.

    I looked I looked and looked and finally found this wonderful tutorial! I can't thank you enough for presenting this from a teacher's perspective!! I have wanted to do this with my 6th graders...do you feel that age is patient enough for this project?

    • @amslerartroom9283
      @amslerartroom9283  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Lori! Yes, definitely you could do this with sixth graders. Depending on how long your period is, (Mine is 47 minutes,) you could assemble the blank book in one class. The more organized and prepped you are, the better. I have an "assembly line" or "buffet" area where they go through a line and pick up their cardboard, origami paper, black paper, glue stick , etc. at the beginning of class. Good luck!

    • @lorimcdade1738
      @lorimcdade1738 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thanks for the reply! My class is a frustrating 30 minutes (read 26 on the very best of days).
      I love the template you have made for the layout - do you have more than one, for each table or do they just rotate the one?
      Also, have you tied this to a certain artist for the creation of the abstract? Jasper Johns maybe or the obvious Pollock :) Or is it more media exploration?
      Artist tie-ins are part of my curriculum that I am asking the kiddos to track so I can post-test purely for comprehension.. we do not give grades so assessment is tricky.
      Thanks so much for hashing this out with me.

    • @amslerartroom9283
      @amslerartroom9283  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a short class like yours, you could wrap the cardboard and fold the three black papers class 1, wrap the pieces with a rubber band and assemble it all next class. I have several templates available for the kids to share: maybe enough for half the class. In regards to an artists tie in, Pollock would be great! This part is so adaptable to work with what your curriculum demands.

    • @ursinaamsler1334

      If you prep and organize materials well ahead of time, you can make the physical, blank book in a single class, (maybe spilling over to the next day for assembly.) In terms of what you put inside--- that can vary. If you make an original art work, or a series of prints and paste papers... that can take a while. If you make photocopies of an existing piece of artwork, you could mark, cut and glue them in the book in a couple classes! I think this lesson works best with grade 7 and above.

    Thank you very much for uploading.. Very clever the bird story.. something you cannot forget!! I have done my first one .. and I think there isn't first time without making mistakes!! I did't realize that the origami paper must be a little bit sorter from the black paper so the paper creased in the middle folds.. and I am wondering if there is any special instruction for add two or more black papers... I have add two more but I am not sure if it is ok.. Thank you again for you again for the beatiful turorial!! Greeting from Greece! Have a nice day!!!

    • @ursinaamsler1334
      @ursinaamsler1334 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can add more black panels, yes! At some point, it would become too thick, (especially if you plan on adding collage or photos to the inside of the book,) but two extra panels should be fine. The total amount needs to be an odd number, so 3, as in the example, or 5 or 7 would work... Enjoy!

      You can use any thin paper that you can fold, wrap and glue easily! It doesn't even need to be square, you just need a piece thst gives you enougn to wrap around the back with a half inch of excess.
