IAF and Navy rejected it because of its category, not for performance. It is small 13.5 ton aircraft, Rafale is 25.5 ton and Sukhoi is 38.5 ton aircraft. That's the difference of payload capacity and range. But now, due to better avionics and sensors, it is best suited for its role of interception and defense and can challenge any 4.5 gen aircraft 🙏
Heavier planes have less agility. Also requires more maintenance and cannot be easily deployed to forward bases without significant support equipment. Usually cannot take off from unprepared airstrips. Also smaller aircraft have a smaller radar cross section making it naturally stealthy. With drones refuelling coming soon, range issue gets lessened. One can deploy 3 x Tejas for the overall lifecycle cost of a Rafale since it's indigenously built. Finally, the Tejas continues to evolve and upgrade in a constant basis. Foreign purchased aircraft can only undergo one expensive upgrade every 5 to 7 years at best with the gains in capability still being nowhere near as significant as for Tejas.

Tejas has certain unique advantages which many modern combat aircraft lag behind 1) it is a smaller sized aircraft hence with an natural lower rcs 2) since it has a high percentage of composite material again it lowers the rcs if radar absorbant coating/tiles are used on this tejas aircraft like which are being used in f-22/f-35 this would make tejas even less observable/more stealthier making it more useful in both defensive and offensive roles.
We saw this kind of advantage by iaf previously in smaller sized folland gnats and to certain extent in an upgraded mig-21 bison which is what probably contributed to knocking of paf-f-16 in 2019.

I live in an area near HAL in Bangalore…over last few days, have seen Tejas loaded with fuel tanks doing sorties few times. Other aircraft doing sorties on regular basis is Jaguar and on odd occasions Dornier as well

The only thing left for Tejas in terms of capability is an AESA radar which will improve it's target tracking range and missile guidance. With this it will be a nightmare for Pakistan f-16s.

I dont think that Tejas intersepting Typhoon is such a big deal. If we look in that context then Pakistans F-7 PGs intersepted F-22 in a ariel exercise. Then should we cosider F-7 better then tejas as it intersepted worlds stealthiest aircraft? No we wouldnt because that was a exercise and in exercises advanced aircrafts are flown with disadvantageous circumstances favouring less advanced aircrafts.
No because the US does not want it's aircraft signature detected on various radars. Usually they add parts to the surface of the aircraft to make it visible to radar during exercises so the true capabilities of stealth are not known.

Logically speaking LCA tejas is more of Airforce's dream project as it has 100% components of what the IAF required

Guys, I don't mean to pee on your parade, but 'intercepted' simply means, 'went out to meet', (or, in military context, 'confront'). That's why 'intercepted' is in inverted commas in the title of the video.

I dont think that Tejas intersepting Typhoon is such a big deal. If we look in that context then Pakistans F-7 PGs intersepted F-22 in a ariel exercise. Then should we cosider F-7 better then tejas as it intersepted worlds stealthiest aircraft? No we wouldnt because that was a exercise and in exercises advanced aircrafts are flown with disadvantageous circumstances favouring less advanced aircrafts.

No because the US does not want it's aircraft signature detected on various radars.
Usually they add parts to the surface of the aircraft to make it visible to radar during exercises so the true capabilities of stealth are not known.
