  • When you live in a rental and have to deal with small, old spaces, that don't have a lot of light... it can feel like there's no solution! I know because I've been there, particularly from living in downtown Toronto, which is home to tons of shoebox apartments. But I have learned SO MANY ways to make things better, ultimately helping me to feel better about where I live and also to actually feel good at home. So here are 9 tips to thrive in your rental apartment or house. Some are removable upgrades, some are little things that make a huge difference, and some are just about how you look at things. What I really love about these tips is that they can be employed in a rental but also apply if it's a home that you own. Enjoy!

    Such good ideas for those that live in rentals and don't love their space but feel a little trapped in the designs around them. I live in a rental right now and the kitchen is so dark and I hate it. Through your kitchen upgrades, it's shown me the possibilities of rental friendly improvements are endless and completely within reach ✨ thanks Dalia for the continuous inspo

    I believe nice white lights are great for overhead lights and the warm lights are great for lamps. Some colors and styles just don’t look flattering with too much yellow light.
    But definitely do what makes you feel at home. I need a mixture haha

    I use white twin flat sheets for my ceiling to floor windows in our rental apartment. Super inexpensive.... I paid about $5 each sheet at Wal-Mart in 2019/2020. This is my 2nd time using them in a rental apartment. ----- thanks for all the great tips 👍

    I totally dealt with this last year until I moved! I lived in this 960sqft apartment in West Hollywood for years and it was SO dark and SO loud but it inspired me to be creative and find ways to love it and make it work! Love your channel - very inspiring. Thanks, Dalia!

    Thanks for all your tips, Dalia. After 4 years in a super unhappy place and hating where I lived, I am finally making the move. I am renting a mobile home for the first time not attached to anybody 650 mi from where I'm living now. And honestly I couldn't be happier. Three more weeks until the movers come can't wait. Definitely will be watching for more renter friendly upgrades

    Great suggestions, except for ME, I do prefer bright white rather than soft white lamp bulbs. I live in the dark, wintry Northeast, and being able to illuminate my living room with bright daylight lightbulbs gives me hope for the anticipated enjoyment of natural outdoor light of spring and summer.
    When I daydream about a new space, I imagine a whole wall of a watercolor effect mural of misty deciduous trees in muted grays, creams and beiges. In that situation, I probably would prefer soft white light to enhance the dreamy effect.

      @artsygal112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same. Did the same with my space cause it's so dark. But cause I wasn't sure I would want it bright all the time, I actually use color changing lightbulbs and it is a game changer. For the days I want a laid back mood, I just change it to soft white. And to help with with this, I attached it to an alexa so that I don't need to manually do it

    Excellent suggestions for both renters and owners. Please use LED or sustainable lighting and I actually do prefer a cool light to a warm light - it's more flattering to my skin tone. Do what makes your space feel like home. When your space around you is how you like it your day will be a little bit brighter. 😊🥰❤️☺️🪸🦩☀️🌴❤️

    Dalia, I saw how miserable you were in Toronto. I saw you on your miniscule patio, which you did a great job with what you had, and all you could see was building's and then when you moved you were so happy. Those deer made me happy too. Thank you for all the tips.

    The house my apartment is in was built in 1935. It has the brown trim from the. Since my husband and I had lived here for almost 15 years and I have lived here another 3 years.
    We took the apartment as is - the previous tenants had lived here 14 years - and no upgrades. I have carte blanc to redo the entire apartment. Then my husband died, and I lost all heart to do it.
    Recently I bought wallpaper for some reason (it wasn't what I am using it for) and it made me really smile.
    I am ready to go. I found counter paper and paper for the cabinets (much cheaper than paint), have the ready to go attitude. Then I fell and tore my rotator cuff.
    As for the next video, I saw another TH-camr use chipboard on her bedroom floor rug to install floor linoleum. It worked great.

    Kitchen renos these days are closer to $40-50k 😬😬 idk if it has to do with the price of wood for cabinets or what the deal is with that. I definitely think we're gunna be doing slow, small upgrades until it's absolutely falling apart. We're so lucky that even tho our kitchen is older, everything is in beautiful condition.

    I just moved into a 500 sq ft studio in a high rise building with ceiling to floor windows, I absolutely love it! Now I just need to figure out how to decorate it! Im finding that I need more color in my decor! I have too much neutrals, too much black, my issue is mixing and matching colors..I feel like I don’t know how to make it flow..like to be an eclectic vibe without looking like a mess of colors don’t go together…

    • @hayes540
      @hayes540 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Alex M. What works for me is to start with one inspirational piece like maybe a throw pillow, vase or painting you love with a nice variation of colors which include the neutral colors you already have in your home. Pull colors from that one piece to select/balance the decor for your space to ensure the entire space ties together perfectly. Hope this helps

    I'm so lucky to have found this channel. You do amazing work. I actually own my condo but I don't have a lot of money & I don't have the nerves needed to do major DIY in my home so being able to do things that are removable make me feel much better about DIY, so you don't have to be a renter to love this channel!

    I get so inspired to make these changes and then I think about how the owner of our rental could sell the house because of how much its worth! Then it seems useless 🤷‍♀️. Then I watch your videos and get inspired and go through the cycle again 😆 🤣.

    I have BIG issues 😢 our cupboards are seriously over 50yrs old & the bottoms of the cupboards are falling. So I need to figure out something that is not expensive.
    Also the outside siding is rotting from age and the sun.
    I’m soooo over being a home owner! I want to rent so I’m not responsible to fix EVERYTHING!
    We are going to sell soon. And not sure I’m staying in TX. Looking for a newer area that has stable weather that doesn’t drop below 70*. I have hardware in my neck from C2-C7 due to breaking my neck. And also have to have knee replacements so my joints seize up when it’s colder & barometric pressure.
    I love our land here in TX and our place in Alaska. Alaska is our primary where my hubby n I both born & raised. But after breaking my neck the cold kicked me out 😢

    The only place I like daylight lightbulbs for is in the kitchen. I cook a lot so I need as much light as possible, and I need lights that do not change colors of the food I cook (e.g. make it looks too yellow).

    I had an apartment a few years ago with tiny dark-wood-stained kitchen cabinets. I used starch to attach tissue paper to them, then painted white over that and it peeled right off when I moved. There was a little residue but it washed right off and it was so small it didn’t take much effort. I also covered a wall with a thin gauzy bedcover with the starch as well and it looked like wallpaper. Love that stuff!

    Lol 10-15 years is considered old!? I live in New England where the majority of rented places are old old. I’m talking my duplex was built in 1920…. I’ve been doing what I can to make it feel modern but it’s hard when you can just feel the icky of 100 years of people living there.

    I’d love to pick people’s brains about how to upscale specifically a mobile home. I’m really happy with my personal style (midcentury English cottage) and I have used almost all of your rental tips! but sometimes living in a rental trailer just … gets in the way, like the wallboard strips, the flat fake wood ceiling trim, the awkward layout, the zero curb appeal 😅 I can’t complain, it’s only about ten years old and has some nice features, but sometimes it just feels very… trailer. 😂 Anyone have any ideas???

    Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to ALaHYM with a voice of singing (Psalm 47:1) ! // SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is a curse to the G-o-d name (Isaiah 65:11-12), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. All followers of the Messiah are to do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the Crucifixion of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ (King, righteous), to Whom ABRaHM tithed. Ask the Messiah to be your personal Savior. He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). ...for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of Hayah (Romans 3:23). The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). He Himself is an Atoning Offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world (1 John 2:2). The Messiah died on the cross, & Resurrected three days later (presenting Himself as First Fruits to the Father). Please ask Him to be your Savior. He is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life.
