      He really has. Tbh... one tin only for me. Star of the East flake from c&d is sooooo much better IMHO. Same heavy heavy Latakia vein, WAY smoother and more flavorful if you use the breathe method and retrohale.

    Since watching your review last year, I've been smoking Maltese Falcon as my "desert island blend." Smooth, great oriental/Latakia forward blend. My tobaccoist loved it! and pointed my to another, Latakia forward that I'd love to have you review on: "Odyssey," by
    G. L. Pease. Very close to MF blend, but slightly more Latakia, and wonderfully smokey-smooth, all day blend. These are both wonderful blends. Thanks so much Chris for the time you've given to the YTPC over the years. We sure missed you following your Mother's passing and glad you're back.

    I’m lucky enough to have a couple of tins from 2008. It’s so smooth and Smokey, a very slight sweet taste, like a very savoury bbq sauce. It’s fantastic. I don’t know how a new tin would compare.

    Smooth smoke with sweetness from virginias set off by a spiciness/pepper/liquid smoke hickory or applewood taste from the Latakia and orientals- very enjoyable with pleasant room note- this is a writer’s or philosopher’s blend…one that encourages contemplation.

    Fantastic blend! My palate tends to absorb flavors that are earthy + woodsy, with that sweet & sour element popping in from time to time. Be careful not to over salivate!
    An image that always comes to mind when smoking this is a newly built desk made with fragrant oak, with freshly bound leather books resting in their proper place.
    I usually smoke ‘Maltese Falcon’ in my Jolly Roger Drake or Clipperton pipe (with a pipe filter adapter to bypass the need for an actual filter).

    • @Jeff_Seely
      @Jeff_Seely ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello my fiend and thanks for your comments. May I ask about the comment about oversalivating while smoking this blend? Why should one try not to do this with the Maltese Falcon. My question probably reveals the hand of a complete noob but I am committed to learning more about the pipe smoking hobby and if I don't ask questions, watch videos, and read forum s, I'll stay an uncomfortable noob. Thanks sir!

    • @xcratchy
      @xcratchy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jeff_Seely Welcome to the pipe smoking “hobby”, and thanks for reaching out.
      I mentioned over salivating bc those orientals (at least for me) can bring such a pleasurable sweet and sour flavor (much like a tart glass of orange juice) that I find myself venturing into the wet smoker territory.
      When I feel this sensation coming on, I remove the pipe from my mouth, take a swig of coffee or whatever I’m drinking and continue on. May work for you or anyone else, too if you find this happening.

    Yes it’s an eagle not a falcon, but still kinda works lol. So I’m not really getting any sweet aspect to it. I’ve had this aging almost 3 years now as well. Everyone’s palate slightly different though I suppose. I’m also using your same Porto Cervo pipe. In any case still an amazing smoke. I’m just not falling over crazy for it. That is why I give it 4 birds vice a perfect 5. Look forward to Sleepy Hollow coming up! Have had that stashed away also.

  • @RyanAshley419

    I have to give this one three cat in a boxes (cats in a box? lol). I just don't care for oriental tobaccos. I have tried and tried, and that sourish kick just always strikes me as odd. I mean, I harvested tobacco as a kid (it is was a good summertime job back in the day when they didn't ask any questions.) That sour note always strikes me as tobacco that's been sitting in a moldy barn or something. It just doesn't work for me.
    As these types of blends go, I can see how people who love this style would love it, so I gave it a 3. I like that the latakia is not too forward. That being said, will I finish this tin, probably. It may take a while. I won't get rid of it. I usually end up trading away most English blends I come across. So, that being said, I give it a 3.

    👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Very interesting. My first English type of blend. I lean toward perique heavy and cavendish blends so this is a 180 turn for me. I like it. If there is such a thing as a “thought provoking” tobacco this would be it. Normally I think about the smoke but with this one I thought about all kinds of things. I will certainly keep this in my rotation.

    I started smoking in 2018. I bought this blend and plumb pudding back then based on your older videos. I tried smoking them and had a weird flavor experience I found with all English blends. It tasted and smelled like liquid soap.
    This year (2024)I returned to another English blend and had the same experience. But I decided to push through. After a few days of just smoking the blend I shook the soap flavor. But now I seem to be more sensitive to spicy tobaccos.
    I've been thinking about it and wonder if I have an issue with my tounge. Any one have advise?

    Thanks for the video, Muttonchop! I bought some Maltese Falcon a while back and just opened it recently, as my first English blend. Smoked a few bowls. It’s pretty good, but it can be a little intense at times.

    Back when I smoked cigarettes, my favorite was Bakan Sobranies. I quit cigs in 1999. Last June, age 70 I decided it wasn't going to kill me so I started with cigars and migrated to a churchwarden. I have found if Latakia is in the same ROOM with other tobaccos it overpowers. Just my taste as a "New" piper. I prefer a much milder Cavendish and Bright blend. My local tobacconist mixes a thing called "Longbottom" Which is my favorite. On occasion I will try a latakia mix. sounds like Maltese Falcon is the thing men's Dreams are made of as Bogart said :). I'll try it.

    ❤❤❤❤❤. It took me a while to come around to English blends. Maltese Falcon definitely pushed the English blends into my favorites. The tin note is very unique, like someone threw an incense into a camp fire. Don’t let that scare you off though. It’s one of the smoothest English blends you will ever try. The moisture level is (for me) always perfect. It takes a light very easily and smokes nice and slow. The orientals come strait through with their Spicy tang, followed by the smoky Latakia. Very enjoyable! I’ve never gotten tongue bite from it. This blend is definitely one for smoking outdoors. The wife rating for this one is very low though, she says it’s too pungent and I have to change my shirt after smoking this one. It’s worth the trouble though! As always, such a great review video! I look forward to next months!

    🍁🍁I wanted to like this one more, especially based on the smell from the tin. Very smoky on the nose, like beef jerky. I can also smell the Virginia.
    Smoking this, I had a couple of observations.
    The smell was fairly pleasant, but it had a slight aftertaste that reminded me somewhat of SPC Wild Man, which I pretty much hate. It wasn’t quite as bad since I reasonably enjoyed this and finished the bowl.
    It was also pretty difficult to keep lit. I’m not sure that it’s that wet, so it’s either the cut or the way I packed it (or both).
    There are a lot of others I would return to before I reach for this.

Do I close off my throat, or leave it open access to my lungs? If the latter, then you end up inhaling the smoke, and I would rather not be inhaling. Help me understand what my tongue should do. ???

I would prefer a more robust and sharp profile such as 10 to midnight for a daily smoke. This blend is a bit to subtle to be a go to daily blend for me but great entry level for folks new to English blends.

      I don't think I have ever smoked MB Golden Extra, what kind of taste does it have?

    • @Zigmeister67
      @Zigmeister67 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MuttnchopPiper It's a Burley blend with Virginia. So basically a Burley with a hint of sweetness. I love it in my Savinelli 114. That hint of sweet makes it great for my taste.
      Btw, Great videos.

    I don't understand how anyone can taste anything other then smoke. I've tried different blends in a very good pipe. I've tried different smoking methods and still nothing. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

      Retrohale out your nose! What blends have you tried? What pipe have you got, is it new and do you use a filter?

    On the milder side on medium to my taste. Moisture was pretty good out of the tin, maybe just slightly moist. I put it in the "sweet english" category. Would be a good introduction to englishes. The "mystery spice" is slightly odd to me, but just my personal palate. It's a decent smoke, I'll finish the tin. Might get anoter tin down the road, but not part of my regular rotation.

    This is a 5/5 blend for me. It will always stay in my rotation as long as it stays available to me. When you introduced this to us way back, I fell in love with it, and I never want to run out, haha. Cheers brother ✌️💨

    Question : Do any of you pipers tip the pipe during the smoke to dump any excess ash from the top layers as you burn down the bowl ? Many thanks 🙏🏼

      I do after I get to about 2/3rds down, a gentle scrape and dump

    😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️ For me, it's a 4 out of 5. But I'm not big into latakia. If I loved latakia as much as some people then it would be a five. For my palette, latakia can easily take over a smoke. That being said, this one still has some nuance, and I do find it enjoyable enough to smoke on occasion.

    Definitely a 💜💜💜💜 blend. Mr. Pease is a genius with Balkan blends and I slightly prefer Abingdon, Samarra, and Quiet Nights to this one, but definitely a great blend.
