As an Englishman my idea of Scotch broth is mutton meat and bone, brown onion, leek, carrot, swede, potato, peal barley and marrowfat peas.

I very much enjoyed this video, thanks for posting it. Although my mum's family came to Australia from Edinburgh several generations ago, Scotch broth was a staple in our home. But I really like the interesting changes Ms McDermid made to hers. Served with freshly baked bread it would be a delicious meal.

Doesn't matter if it's a meal or a starter, if it's not rich and hearty, its CRAP!...lol.......good vid

Sound quality leaves much to be desired I'm afraid. The one holding the camera is audible but the cook not so much. Luckily I can see what she's doing... 😉

Deffo a meal, not a starter, if it’s hearty enough. Sorry, Jo, but I have to side with Val here.

Oh please place a wet cloth etc under your chopping broad reduces it slipping. Plus have tub or bowl for your waste .

I use parsnips instead of potatoes and add a clove of garlic with the onions at start… use chicken drumsticks for stock and cornflour to thicken a little grate all carrots and parsnips.. beautiful scotch broth

That sounds like some French concoction. Garlic is banned in Scotland.

My mum didn’t put in the tinned tomatoes but that looks great so I’ll be doing that next time I make broth. I would have put 3 gel stock cubes in for flavour. I’ll pass on the soft cheese though I think!!
Also, you don’t salt it when the pulses are uncooked because it toughens them - salt afterwards to taste.
btw - it freezes beautifully and is just like 2nd day soup !!
Thanks for the great reads 🤓🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
And it’s definitely a soup plate - which has a bowl as the centre but curves out to a wide (ish) “lip”. Dad wouldn’t have his soup out of anything else.

I've never seen the broth mix going in without washing or soaking overnight, I've often struggled when I've even just cold soaked for 24hrs. I clean until water is clear then boil and soak in salted water. Over night then rinse before adding to broth. Have you always used straight out of jar?

I searched for Scotch Broth recipe and clicked on this because it looked like Val McDermid... then the title happened, it was rather surreal. Thankfully found her work through my incredible English teacher in secondary school.

Yup, anywhere in the central belt at least, it's a plate of soup. Looks amazing! I know what I'm making for dinner tonight because it is definitely a meal - cheers Val and Jo!🍲❤

Random coincidence, I was looking for a scotch broth recipe and realised that this is the writer of Karen Pirie. I worked on a couple of episodes of that last year.

I say soup can be a starter or a meal, depends on the kind of soup you made. For instance I made posole and corn bread for dinner, posole is a Mexican soup and is very hearty made with hominy, pork and lots of peppers!

Loving the Leek chopping. What a nice surprise V. Mc What a surprise ! Glad to know that Jason's heart is in the right place I can breathe a sigh of relief. I mean if it wasn't, he'd be in real trouble and you and I might be done for Manslaughter along with other onlookers. PS Who is Jason ?

I am not exaggerating when I say, your recipe for Scotch Broth is absolutely in a class of it's own. It might be appreciated by Vegans, in fact I'm surr it will. Thanks.
