The reason why i loved Rocafella back in the 2000's is because they had a particular 'sound'. I don't think its a bad thing. From NO ID, to Bink, Kanye, Just Blaze, Chad West Hamilton, Boola Got Beats, and even the Heatmakerz. I love that sound! It made albums cohesive.

Bink is not lying about Just Blaze. If you look at Just's work before Rocafella (ie, Killah Priest's 2nd album in 1999), it sounded nothing like his Roc work. Yet, Bink had that Roc sound before Just and Kanye got to the Roc.

Bink is right. I think all of us who respect the art understand what he’s saying. For those who respect the money and fame think otherwise. Doesn’t mean you aren’t talented if you take someone’s sound and create your own original piece, same goes for rappers. But there’s something to be said about the person who’s the creator. Before them it didn’t exist. To act like they’re the same is crazy. All Bink is saying is if you’re gonna take my sound give me my credit. It’s about respect.

Pharrel is more of an orchestrator or conductor of sorts. Chad Hugo made those beats... worked the board... turned the dials... and made Pharrels visions or ideas come to life at times via instruments. Mase Looking At Me was (in my opinion unless I am forgetting someone) the first big break for them other than some R&B shit. That was like 97/98. Why's Chad Hugo's name first as producer? Basically what happened is Hugo didn't and still doesn't want the spotlight. It's also why he would barely show up in videos. He ain't wanna be the DJ Khlad or P Diddy screaming or dancing on the records out front. Pharrell had plans as an artist anyway and was more marketable so they put him out front. Drives me nuts when people just straight up say Pharrell.... at least say NEPTUNES ffs. #BIGFACTS But at the same time VA stand up!!!! Neptunes and Timbo baby. You can't mistake their sounds for ANYONE else either. Plus I agree with the names Binks dropped but yall left them out tho huh? Its ok tho we used to gettin overlooked in VA.

And then of course came NORE in 99 that man controlled the ENTIRE summer and didn't quit until like mid 2000. It was a wrap after that. Super famous and the price went up on them beats son and Hugo fell back. I feel it tbfh not everyone wants to be famous. Hugo can go damn near anywhere only die hards gonna know who he is. Pharrel can't go nowhere. Fame isn't for everyone just ask Em... he thought he wanted it. He switched up fast. Again... I can dig it tho I'd be the same way. While Chad Hugo doesn’t get enough credit, Pharrell proved himself for a decade, as a solo producer. Chad seemed to just fade into the background. So that debunks this notion Pharrell was the P Diddy of !Neptunes. Maybe Chad made his millions and just worked on niche underground projects after Neptunes. I do notice Neptunes used more 70s and 80s electro synths Kraftwerk, Art of Noise type sounds, that’s isn’t evident in Pharrell’s solo production. In my opinion Pharrell was more of a hitmaker and Chad was a musician, knob turner/sound guy. They complimented each other. That 2nd Clipse album is very underrated. Beats were 🔥 on that joint.

I also think that you should use lavalier microphones like the zoom f2 bt lavalier microphone or the wireless go2 and connect that to a portable sound recorder as a back up. THEN I think you should should use a boom and shotgun mic as your primary microphones and I would connect those to a portastudio x8 or Rodecaster Pro2 as my main audio recording device. This would ensure that your audio quality is always a1. I know it’s costly but you can do it! 100!! I appreciate what you do!!!

Go back to Beanie Sigel’s first album, The Truth. Just Blaze has a track on there, “Who Want What”, one of his first for Rocafella and it sounds exactly like something Swizz Beatz would do. No one would recognize it as a Just Blaze beat today. The very next track is “Raw & Uncut” produced by Bink. It doesn’t have a vocal soul sample, but the drum patterns and feel of it are what ended up being Rocafella’s dominant sound on the Dynasty album. And Bink’s track on the Dynasty album “1-900 Hustler” is basically the blueprint for what Just did on The Blueprint itself. Now granted, Just took the influence and made magic. His best beats are in another league. But there’s facts in what Bink was saying.

Bink said it. He didn’t sign to the management company. There’s no incentive for Jay-Z to say his name. He said Just Blaze and Kanye. Why? Because if other people engage them to make music, he makes money because they’re signed to the management company. There’s an incentive for Jay to make them more visible. If he says Bink and helps make him popular, he steers people to him, which is an independent who he can’t eat off of. He took care of his house. Bink made his choice.

Loved the conversation during the interview. Bink raised many valid points about his production style and crossed referenced it with information provided with interviews from Ye, Roberson, and Jus Blaze himself, pointing to fact that he's a "chameleon". So in all fairness to Bink he was correct. He stands on a different level of integrity within this music business and you have to honor and respect that. It never hindered his contribution to the culture as a matter of fact it added to his importance in music. What blew me away was the Virginia HAND in all of these stages of HIP HOP. Jus Blaze was perceptive enough to see and tap into Bink's FORWARD vision in production and sound, thus making BINK foundational.

There are many industries that employ colorist, comics, film, fashion, etc… but I get Bink’s point. With that said I think hip hop is the only genre that has this argument because a producer that has various styles and sounds, even one that emulates, is valued and has a longer career. Quincy Jones has several styles and eras… meaning he sounds different in the early days than he does in his Jackson years, which btw he employed sub-producers and writers, where he was more of a music manager/ supervisor. In hip hop there is such a focus on “biting” which I can respect but it goes against the reality of the learning process. You’re gonna sound like people or draw like people or sing like people or write like people who first influenced you until you develop your own style. I agree with Bink, when I first heard Just I thought it was Swizz on a Busta album, then when I saw/ heard him again it was Bink / Kanye sound which became the “Rockafella sound”. But I don’t knock him for it, he has a sound now that is undeniable but he can still switch it up, Just is also a musician so he has an advantage on most hip-hop producers. Him not admitting his influences is problematic, though. But Bink mentions this a lot, either out do Just or let it go because you that train has left the station.

You can’t use the analogy of “tracing someone else’s art and coloring it different” as being an unauthentic artist when you are a sample based producer. Essentially you are doing the very thing that you’re accusing others of. You are taking music that is already arranged and either looping a piece of the music and adding drums or completely rearranging the composition. Either way there was a blueprint of that record and you took pieces to make your own creation. Guitarist, drummers, pianist/keyboardist, singers and etc take licks, runs and etc from one another all the time. As a musician you have artist that inspire you and as a novice you emulate that person until you find your own voice.
