I built this kit so many times as a child in the 80s that I could do it from memory (I'm not kidding). I've turned 46 years old today and still have the kit upstairs. I've just given it to my 4 year old son.
He does Matt, and what you’re doing is fantastic. Really imaginative and keep at it. You have brought back a lot of memories. I have the early Lego Technic Forklift you’ve also produced.
Agreed. Felt the twinge of nostalgia, as I also built that kit (my first technic) on Christmas day a long time ago. Remember being fascinated when all those static bits of plastic I'd clipped together, following those static diagrams in the manual, suddenly became this glorious moving mechanism.
Most has been completed for months! But I’ve been busy with the day job, and had nowhere big enough to assemble it 😁 however, I may be moving house so could have more space soon :/
Wow, this is so cool. I also had this set, and as many others, I have many fond memories of playing with it. I hooked a motor to the engine, propped the wheels up in the air and "drove" the car. I powered the poor motor with 12 volts, which eventually made the motor melt. It had got so hot that the solder had melted and been flung all around the motor. So wonderful to see it in full scale. And the sound of that engine.
Christmas '80 saw me building this set. Over the years it stayed in the toy closet & this remains the last original in the box Lego set I have from back then. I always knew it was special. I keep it displayed in a glass cabinet like it was some museum piece.
oh man this stuff is the dream! put together it again the other week. so fudging cool watching you adjust the wheel with one in me hand haha. oh man that laugh when you get the engine revving over first time with the drill. oh man that laugh needs to be sold in aerosol cans haha, i know that laugh hahaha
Wow, this is by far the best Lego set, I used to have this one that I remember building at Christmas. Awesome video 👍 I would love to replace this in my car just to see a garages reaction when they ope the bonnet, so satisfying to watch
That sounds like a great idea - put it in something light enough like the original mini and you can probably have it limp in on a relatively small and concealable electric motor, perhaps pushing the Lego pistons around by leaving the original gearbox in and in gear - so it sounds almost like a real engine...

Thanks for this amazing work - I loved building this kit when I was about 12. It was such an improvement over the previous chassis 853 (the front steering always collapsed under its own weight). I remember the frustration of trying to keep the elastic band on the flywheel whilst attaching the fan. I got a bit triggered when I saw your bands had slipped as well! I would honestly pay to see these sets in a museum somewhere like the lego discovery centre in Manchester 👍👍

It's quite amazing that a belt type 3d printer is perfect for this task. I was wondering if it was possible to ever print them in one piece and here it is in front of me. I knew that belt printers were good for making chains, yet I would not have made a connection to using it to make longer bricks. I hope you continue doing amazing things like this and documenting/recording it to share. Cheers!

@@MattDenton I have had excellent results using a dry wax lubricant for sliding doors for making 3D printed parts slippery. You apply it like a crayon. The wax smoothes the 3D printed textures and gives a surprisingly slippery surface between parts. And since it is dry it does not attract dust. AGS-Door-Ease-Lube-Stick

I love seeing the engineering that goes into these to make them work, those bearings and the general piston assembly were especially creative. Do you have any plans for a smaller kit? I love the combination of plates and technical pieces, but I don’t have enough time to make anything as complex as you’ve done here.

I remember those taps. When I first saw them I thought they had packed them in the wrong kit, as they should have been in a Lego kitchen kit! Fantastic to see this coming together, brings back so many memories from when I was young!

Lego Technic was my favourite toy and what I particularly like about your endeavours is that you combine legendary old Lego kits with 21st century toys like 3D Cad, 3D printers and modern electric motors, electronics etc. Best of both worlds! I have build this engine in 2:1 scale which left me with fever friction problems than you had to solve. Worked for me without any ball bearings.Great work, Matt, and thanks for the idea. Was a joy building/creating it.

It’s sat in my cupboard for the last 30 odd years and a year ago during lockdown 3.0 I cleaned it, built it, bought any missing pieces, and so began a year of getting back into Lego. In the last 12 months I’ve spent over £1,000 on new sets and have watched many hours of Lego content here on TH-cam. I’ve only just discovered your channel when I spotted the first video in this series. As a kid my least favourite parts to build in this set were the seats, I often used to leave them until last, but I still loved your first video. But this video, mate, this has had me grinning from ear to ear. I really hope you go on to build the full car, I can’t wait to follow the journey. Thank you!

This was my favourite Lego kit. Everything on show and fun to watch. The exact opposite of kits like the Defender where you spend hours but can’t see anything.
Amazing build. This was my favorite childhood set and seeing the same movements at this scale is just crazy. Seeing the 3 speed gear shifting will also be amazing. I became a Technic collector as an adult, probably because of this set.
I remember every Christmas getting a big technic Lego car, this was my first one and I had it for 30 years, then sold it! Regret that now! Awesome project, keep up the good work.

I made the exact same error with my build way back when. Was months before I realised what I did wrong as the fan never worked properly until I corrected it. It was definitely a hallelujah moment!! This project is just incredible!
I don't understand.... Why I'm getting this recommendation only just now! I bought this car, which I had as a kid, a few months back, out of nostalgia. And then I bought some more old Technic sets I used to have. And some new stuff. And I'm hooked all over again. This is the craziest Lego thing I've seen so far, but I love it. Unfortunately, I can't see you ever finished it.

Nice to know, I wasn't the only one, who got that crank built wrong. Christmas 1984, still remember that frustration. But, I still have that same car. That printed version is just insane.
Use graphite powder mixed with a bit of silicone oil to lubricate the pistons. Once the oil rubs away there will be a good layer of graphite worked into the plastic, leading to significantly reduced friction. I use this in nerf blasters when I need a pump or something high-friction to run smooth
I used to want to do this when I was a kid take my favourite lego models and make them bigger. Keep up the great work I am a new subscriber you earned the moment the engine came to life i cracked a smile.

Hearing that inner child laugh come out was so genuine. That new feeder will help with the longer beams for sure. Can't wait to see the completed unit like most but enjoying the build process. You'll have to do a cost analysis at the end along with total weight etc. I know you've made estimates but I'm curious as to the overall weight at the end. Keep up the good work. -G

Very cool. I actually use PLA for gears in my RC racing cars. They hold up ages as long as there's a thin film of grease. I use a small paint brush to apply the grease as a thin layer so it doesn't splash off the gear in use, and that's all it ever needs. The touring cars I drive in my recent videos all use 3D printed gears, dog bone cups and pulleys.
The coolest thing you ever made? You bet it is! The seats were already awesome, but to see (and hear....) that engine actually spinning is just on another level. Can't wait for the next part!
Love it! I had this kit new as a kid back in the 80s too and also made a mistake when building it first time - still remember it clear as day all these years later, I positioned the two black parallel beams that carry the engine wrong such that they could only attach to the main chassis on one stud each instead of two and the whole engine cradle kept falling off as a result. Took ages to figure out what I'd done wrong!
I love this kit! Watching you put this together reminded me that I reconfigured the gearbox and created an extra gear. I will have to go to the back of the cupboard and get my model out of mothballs 😊

Who doesn't remember throwing a piston or two with this set. Awesome video. I have been looking forward to this. Love the engineering detail that you put into it like the bearings to make it work!

This was my favourite Lego kit. Everything on show and fun to watch. The exact opposite of kits like the Defender where you spend hours but can’t see anything.

Amazing build. This was my favorite childhood set and seeing the same movements at this scale is just crazy. Seeing the 3 speed gear shifting will also be amazing. I became a Technic collector as an adult, probably because of this set.

I made the exact same error with my build way back when. Was months before I realised what I did wrong as the fan never worked properly until I corrected it. It was definitely a hallelujah moment!!

I bought this car, which I had as a kid, a few months back, out of nostalgia.
And then I bought some more old Technic sets I used to have. And some new stuff. And I'm hooked all over again.
This is the craziest Lego thing I've seen so far, but I love it.
Unfortunately, I can't see you ever finished it.

Nice to know, I wasn't the only one, who got that crank built wrong. Christmas 1984, still remember that frustration. But, I still have that same car. That printed version is just insane.

i too received the car chassis in the 1980’s which i still have on display in my book case today.

Use graphite powder mixed with a bit of silicone oil to lubricate the pistons. Once the oil rubs away there will be a good layer of graphite worked into the plastic, leading to significantly reduced friction. I use this in nerf blasters when I need a pump or something high-friction to run smooth

Hearing that inner child laugh come out was so genuine. That new feeder will help with the longer beams for sure. Can't wait to see the completed unit like most but enjoying the build process. You'll have to do a cost analysis at the end along with total weight etc. I know you've made estimates but I'm curious as to the overall weight at the end. Keep up the good work. -G

Very cool.
I actually use PLA for gears in my RC racing cars. They hold up ages as long as there's a thin film of grease. I use a small paint brush to apply the grease as a thin layer so it doesn't splash off the gear in use, and that's all it ever needs. The touring cars I drive in my recent videos all use 3D printed gears, dog bone cups and pulleys.

The coolest thing you ever made? You bet it is! The seats were already awesome, but to see (and hear....) that engine actually spinning is just on another level. Can't wait for the next part!

Love it! I had this kit new as a kid back in the 80s too and also made a mistake when building it first time - still remember it clear as day all these years later, I positioned the two black parallel beams that carry the engine wrong such that they could only attach to the main chassis on one stud each instead of two and the whole engine cradle kept falling off as a result. Took ages to figure out what I'd done wrong!

Watching you put this together reminded me that I reconfigured the gearbox and created an extra gear. I will have to go to the back of the cupboard and get my model out of mothballs 😊
