  • "That Alfa Romeo Petrolhead Thing"
    "You can't be a petrolhead until you've owned an Alfa Romeo."
    How many times have you heard that? Well one man who thinks Jeremy Clarkson was right to have drawn this rule in the automotive sand, is motoring presenter Paul Woodford.
    If you've always fancied an Alfa, but the online forums have done nothing for your irrational fear of the orange lights of a recovery truck, this could well be the video for you.
    If you want to see a genuine, honest review of Alfa ownership from a motoring presenter who has owned not one, but two Alfa Romeos, this is definitely the video for you.
    If, on the other hand you have an Italian flag on the dashboard of your car, a photo of Pavarotti in your wallet and you've named your children Luizi and Spendido, yet you're from Slough, may we suggest you take some time off social media. It's for the best.
    Enjoy the review - for more, follow Paul on Twitter @paulwoodford84 or visit www.paulwoodford.co.uk.

    I have one too. 13 years driving around without any big issues. Just love it! Even in 2019 she is still beatiful. And indeed...the engine is a Fiat/Alfa engine, not an Opel/Vauxhall. My next car will be an Alfa again!

      Its funny how different the same engine can be rated in different cars. In my Fiat Croma, and its desing by Giugiaro too, but people think that even that diesel engine wont last long in Fiat, but when the same engine is under Alfas or Saabs, or Opels bonnet, its really good and solid engine :D
      Finnish people have interesting opinions about Fiat, got to say.

      Very nice car, but the front wheel drive doesn't make it a true Alfa, the new Giulia has remedied this it.

    • @georgec5479
      @georgec5479 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So buy the AWD version then! This car is more of a true Alfa than all Alfas since 1992 because it's not based on a production Fiat platform. Alfa helped develop the platform and it is only used in the Alfa 159 and Brera. No Fiat or other cars use the same platform. The only other Alfa that can claim that since 1992 is the Giulia and Stelvio.

    According to Wikipedia, this isn't based on the Vectra. Vectra uses the GM Epsilon platform and the 159 uses the GM/Fiat Premium platform. I'm quite relieved to be honest; I couldn't think of a worse car for my 159 to share a platform with...

    • @FROOB202
      @FROOB202 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** The platform doesn't play that much of a part in its affordability. The Volkswagen Phaeton (£40k) shares a platform with the Bentley Continental (£120k). It will however have an effect on its characteristics as a car and I don't want any Alfa Romeo to share a platform made for the most boring of boring family/taxi cars. This is called corner cutting and it's what General Motors and failing car companies specialises at.

    The 1.9 liter diesel engine was made by Fiat. Vauxhall only used it in their Astra/Vectra.So I doubt it is a Vectra underneath. Also the 159 platform had no relation with the Vectra platform whatsoever(correct me if I am wrong). Hence it would be wrong to call 159 as "a Vectra underneath the Alfa body".

    I appreciate you trying to review this car, but please do not put false information on a public video from which people can be wrongfully informed. The Alfa 159 isn't based on an Opel/Vauxhall Vectra, GM uses some Fiat diesels, usually with terrible consequences, it seems Opel ECU's and Multijet engines don't mix well together. You might have confused the 159 with SAAB's 9-3/9-5, which are indeed based on a heavily modified Vectra platform. Another point that i disagree with you is on the engine, the 1.9 16v Multijet engine is a pretty modern lump, even by today's standards without any major issues. I wish you luck on future videos and hopefully they will better and without erroneous info in them.

    This review has some errors. Firstly the platform the 159/Brera is based on has never been used on any GM product. It was developed with GM for GM to use on future premium vehicles. Only Alfa ended up using this platform. Secondly the Diesel engine is a Fiat power train, and was used by GMEurope. Fiat were the first company to develop common rail Diesel engines which were fitted to the Alfa 156. The biggest let down with the 159 is the gearbox which is a GM unit.

    I ve seen this review about 2 years ago and it helped me to decide to buy my 159 2.0 jtdm. Now I can say I am glad I ve bought this car. I just love the looks of it and the feels when I am driving it. Reliability issues? I had to do some things, as it had 200 000 km on the clock but I call this car reliable. Sure, everyone was telling me how unreliable this car is, but none of those people owned one or even knew the model.. I hate when people are saying bad things about anything without verified source. So I ve also bought this car to prove them wrong..

  • @georgec5479

    The Alfa 159 IS NOT a Vectra underneath. Not at all.
    The Alfa 159 is based on a new platform and the only other car which uses the same platform is the Alpha Brera. It's not even based on a Fiat as many Alfas are since this new platform was never used in any Fiat cars. It's an Alfa! It's not a Vectra underneath.
    I don't even have the car and I know that. Sorry, but you should research before making videos in order not to spread wrong information.

      The only thing really Vectra about the 159 was the base 1.8mpi engine which WAS from a Vectra along with it's gearbox. Rest of it however no...

    Far from a TH-cam warrior, I cringe at the thought of being a comments critic - but the 159 is based on the Fiat/GM "Premium" platform, which was destined for I believe a joint venture between Saab (speared off to their own platform), GM (was used briefly in an Insignia concept but was deemed too expensive) and the 939 Alfa platform for the Brera, Spider and 159.
    If anything, the elephant in the room for the model was the externally sourced V6. Perhaps a little more research before bold claims - but then again I guess this is youtube and not the BBC with a production team :)

    250000 kilometers it never missed a beat.
    Good looking, great classic Alfa interior and a great driver.

    its still one of the most beautiful cars on the road. No its not in your face design but its somehow timeless. And if one passes by it always put a smile in my face......... GOD i hope if I could ever afford one there would still be making parts. Just sooooooo beautiful.

    I own the 2.0 diesel version of the same beautiful car
    and yes this is the most honest review i've seen here on youtube
    This car is indeed very good for its value!
    I dare to say that Alfa's are often the best priced 2nd hand cars on the market (thanks to the fals rumors of bad reliability)
    so actually i hope that the majority of the people keep on believing that myth :-)
    and second hand alfas stay the cheap and affordable dream cars they are
    In fact, they are as good as any audi or bmw of the same price class, but they are twice as good in style and look (sorry but except for the high end sport models or Porche's german cars look all like a bunch of very boring business men at a equaly boring business meeting :-)
    Thanks for the review mate! you said everything i was thinking

    • @NicB-Creations
      @NicB-Creations 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right they are usually sold way underpriced secondhand, although the drop in value seems to have slowed down lately. Especially on well maintained ones. I think it's because they are getting rarer so if mine ever goes I should still get something out of it. It's in a better shape then I bought it 9 years ago.

    I hope to keep mine on the road for at least 5 more years and then maybe move to the giullia. I certainly have an emotional attachement to the 159, it's one of those timeless creations that you either love or hate.

    The 1.9 JTDM was used by Alfa long before it saw service in the 159. I had it in my 147 and is outstanding, reliable, fast and economical. It has nothing/zero/nada to do with Vauxhall. The diesel technology is Alfa and is used by many other manufacturers.

      +Sven Vet I can confirm it is a fine car. Had mine, 1.9 JTDm, for a bit, the only problems so far are two bearings in the gearbox and a worn out clutch, which does tend to happen to cars after 9 years of use. Cost me around 600 Eur to replace both. I also suspect the turbine might need an overhaul - again, something that does tend to wear with time - it is, after all, a variable geometry turbine. Other than that, enjoying every day behind the wheel, and, by summer it should be good as new. Suspension seems to be strong enough to live through our nigtmare we call roads, Blue&Me works, and I love "scaring" my passengers by showing them Windows logo once we've set off to somewhere. :P

    Das stimmt nicht. Der alfa 159 basiert auf keiner opel Plattform. Diese sollte für verschiedene Modelle von fiat und gm benutzbar sein. Aber da es mit fiat und gm auseinanderging war die Plattform schon fertig und viel allein auf alfa romeo. Die ersten Benzinmotoren kamen von Opel. Die Dieselmotoren waren rein italienisch.

    Anything that handles well "For a car like this" is not for me. I want a car that drives and handles great with no catches.

    The fact that he misrepresents the engine as an Opel when it’s a fiat engine makes this video lack credibility
