Precision. Each voice perfectly balanced. Attention all pianists, all lovers of Bach, all serious listeners. Something is happening! A phenomenon is among us.
The way you make the choral voice emerge is absolutely unheard in my experience. This is not the same thing in my opinion, as the usual way multi-part voices are written for the keyboard. Fabulous.

Olaffson amazing. Thanks, Mette. Deanna and I are celebrating our 60th anniversary and Deanna’s 85th birthday in July. Hello to your mom and dad from us. Mark THELEN getting married soon. Write and tell us about you and family .
This is music ! This is how you establish the voice of the master ! I hope you come to the Netherlands to play for instance in “ de kleine zaal “ of the Concertgebouw, so we can see and hear you live!
This is not Bach per se. Ir is labelled a Bach-Kempff transcription of a chorale, but it seems to me very much simply like the famous Bach-Busoni transcription, minus a few doublings, and the intervals in the last few bars.
He might be the next pianist to suffer from a focal dystonia. Look at his curved 5th finger. I recommend a medical examination by Prof. Altenmüller at Hannover.
Vikingur doesn’t play it any faster than most performers do. Here’s Horowitz version for comparison: th-cam.com/video/_Iev0OD_v3E/w-d-xo.html But Vikingurs accuracy and brightness in tone is unparalleled IMO.
This is shallow, self-regarding musical nonsense. You can't *hear* or *understand* the right hand melody. Why do you think Bach composed it? Certainly not for this blue-eyed boy to show off how fast he can move his fingers. It's a *meditation* not a finger velocity etude.
Im sorry, I like Vikingurs playing and his record overall, but this is just way too technocratic. There`s absolutely no need for a tempo like that other than to show of technique. Bach`s spirit is gone. Modern tempos in Baroque piano playing overall are just way too high.
Bernd Glemser plays it at this exact same tempo on his CD of Bach transcriptions (OEHMS Classics OC706). I have just listened to the two tracks together! Simone Dinnerstein takes it slower. Both tempi are good, and interesting. I don't think there is any "right answer", and Olafsson's booklet notes show his thoughtful and considered approach.
You can also on TH-cam hear Sokolov playing at this tempo, and Horowitz only very slightly slower. Alexis Weissenberg also plays at the same tempo as Olafsson. Others also can be found on TH-cam playing at a similar tempo. For a completely different rendition, try Wilhelm Kempff playing his own transcription.
I agree somewhat, but when you consider that the tempo of the chorale melody is fairly normal, you can imagine that this was the tempo Bach had in mind.
Precision. Each voice perfectly balanced. Attention all pianists, all lovers of Bach, all serious listeners. Something is happening! A phenomenon is among us.
With each new piece I hear, this pianist leaves me with ever more admiration.
Precisely. I only discovered him recently and each new release leaves me astonished.
I absolutely love Bach! And when I hear you play I love him even more. Thank you sir!
Einfach geschmacklos!
The way you make the choral voice emerge is absolutely unheard in my experience. This is not the same thing in my opinion, as the usual way multi-part voices are written for the keyboard. Fabulous.
It is very good. You might like Murray Perahia's version of this which is, as usual for him, very clear.
Have a listen to Paul Jacobs version of this work, on my channel.
2 mins of sheer joy.. 🌷
Qué locuraaaa!!!! Maravillosooo❤❤❤
Maria Terrades Pallicer -- De acuerdísimo.....BRAVO desde Acapulco !
Unfassbar gut! Bravo!
All these cinematic camera pans, yet not a single shot from above showing both hands at the same time? :(
Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen both his hands at the same time?
0:46 :-)
@Bucky Fiden The camera people of the 21st century don't understand that we want to see hands and only hands, not faces. Sad.
Crawl back into your little world of conspiracy theories.
I love this. Advanced Weissenberg version.
Wwaaaaha?! Amazing control

Impeccable Dear and fantastic. Tecnic perfect. Genial really
This is a pleasure can to hear you. Many thanks for to share this dear Fantastic
Excellent,bien jouer.
This is Bach. Always amazing. I knew it! And it inspired to Michael Hyden who is younger brother of Joseph Hyden for composing hymns.
even today this music sounds so "futuristic" to me.
It's outside of time.
Increíble y maravilloso

exciting, but perhaps too fast

FANTASTIQUE

he came in march , and one year ago
Absurd speed
It’s mesmerizing! This performance leaves me in awe, just like when I first heard Glenn Gould’s performance a long time ago.
Good job🌿
When you sit down to compose a new chorale prelude and you hear your wife yelling at you to take care of the crying baby!
tempo de jazz ! j'adore
Wooooow !!! 👏
Sokolov does have a direct rival. Fantastic
Et Perahia
delicate sounds
It's just unbelievable
I like Levit's recent recording of this piece more. Still a very good performance.
Interesting tempo! Jazzy Bach I like it too.

No one play that piece better than Olafsson
Horowitz did. But a great performance nonetheless!
Sokolov
Paul Jacobs played it quite well. What is "better" is simply an opinion.
Kempff brings back the Bach.
Wait until he plays Beethoven, and critics will go completely nuts!
Golly!
😲👌🏽
Seems the jury of the Guiness Book of Records was there
bach would be proud of you. such an amazing performance vikingur!
Would be much better if it was not so rushed.
He might be the next pianist to suffer from a focal dystonia. Look at his curved 5th finger. I recommend a medical examination by Prof. Altenmüller at Hannover.
Sheet???
Nothing can be worse than such mechanical performance of such music that has intense emotional foundation as Bach
You’re nuts if you think that was mechanical.
Vikingur Olaffson is a Glenn Gould that doesn't hum.
Un peu trop lent !
😂
I love Bach, but play it totally differently..
Hate this cinematic experiments
Studioaufnahme - zu viel geschnitten ...

Maybe, but Vikingur just does it better.
Would have made a perfect soundtrack for ‘The Benny Hill Show.’
Even for the cartoon Tom and Jerry ....
This guy is playing like a machine - with the appearance of a Wall Street broker on vacation. Horrible.
That was my first impression, and then i listend again...
Agreee. And a grotesque tempo.
...but where is the chorale?...:-(
This is shallow, self-regarding musical nonsense.
You can't *hear* or *understand* the right hand melody. Why do you think Bach composed it?
Certainly not for this blue-eyed boy to show off how fast he can move his fingers.
It's a *meditation* not a finger velocity etude.
Well, Mr. Dent, Horowitz, and many, many others have played it at this speed and even faster... It's the Busoni transcription anyway......!
I prefer Bach.
Thomas Dent why did bach composed it?
Im sorry, I like Vikingurs playing and his record overall, but this is just way too technocratic. There`s absolutely no need for a tempo like that other than to show of technique. Bach`s spirit is gone. Modern tempos in Baroque piano playing overall are just way too high.

Murray Perahia plays it this fast too, beautifully too.
I agree somewhat, but when you consider that the tempo of the chorale melody is fairly normal, you can imagine that this was the tempo Bach had in mind.
Gimmick editing, life performance not even equivalent. Sped up and spliced
I think he is cheating! Are you suggesting that he plays the middle voice with his thumb only? I think he is overdubbing
That's a nasty and stupid accusation. Every pianist plays the middle voice with the thumb only. It's way easier than keeping the right hand even.
Bravissimo!
