After 10 years of marriage is when my agoraphobia got so bad I couldn't leave the house. The doctor put me on Zoloft and it subsided quite a bit so I at least could drive and go out. I'm fine in a vehicle but I can't go for a bike ride or go on a hike. Next year we are suppose to go to Rome and my daughter said it's a lot of walking and I'm afraid of that. Also, if we go boating, the boat must be big with a cabin or I can't go on it. Now, I understand your fear of public speaking because I could never do that. I'm too self conscious. Maybe if you got on Zoloft and also took a public speaking class that would help you. There might be help for that online also. Maybe have close friends help you with it. But many actors have that believe it or not. Some actors can only act in front of a camera but not on stage for that reason. I could not have got remotely better without medication. It was truly so helpful. Every day I took the medication, the anxiety got less and less.

I'm also scared of people walking behind me on a sidewalk, and scared of saying "the wrong thing" in a social setting, even though i know people walking behind me are harmless, and what i may have to say socially would not offend anyone who is rational. Black widows are easy to kill with a broom, but that doesn't kill my fear of them. I cannot kill the object of my social fears. though.

Facing fear is one of the most counter-intuitive thing ever. To overcome fear is to face it head-on, and not run from it. I've seen people who run from it for their entire lives. Never ended well for them.
And ironically, anger helps. Anger against one's fear. After all, how can you not be angry that the thing is tormenting you while you fear it? How can you not be angry when fear itself, control so much of your life. You should hate it. You're suppose to hate it. And hopefully from anger comes something of courage that help you face it, or at least try to. It may not be successful for the first few times. But each time will definitely get easier, until you no longer fear it.
If many and I have done it, so can you, regardless whoever you are, wherever you may be.

It could be to make yourself capable of handling physical threat, either with musculature or arming yourself, or with finding someone else, say a husband, who can do that for you, or moving somewhere that's less likely.
As far as how to expose yourself to something like that to become less afraid, then you can join a fight gym. Do a version of the thing that scares you that is safe enough that it isn't harmful, but still feels scary to you, and practice bravery.

I have faced fears that I didn't know I could but overcame so those things, people, situations have no power over me and I 🙏 that fear doesn't show bc it makes me a target to predatory human beings and I agree 💯 with something U said about the danger of insecure men and I agree 💯 bc there r more and more coming up so the key is learning negotiation tactics but mostly how to recognize red flags to avoid toxic people such as Narcissistic personality disordered people, Psychopaths, or Controlling people who mask as caregiving people which pop up more and more! I like 2 believe that credibly sourced knowledge is 1 if our biggest power & want 2 believe that not projecting any fear of any human beings which I can do public speaking in front of (name the #/audience)

What an excellent short clip. And it's interesting that you should mention fear of spiders. When I was 16 years old my parents retired and moved to Puerto Rico. I had the worst case of arachnophobia anyone has ever heard of. All I have to do is see a spider and I start screaming and running. Now my cousin told me that's not going to work in Puerto Rico there spiders everywhere you have to overcome your fear. I started by just looking at the spider. And then touching the spider. And then allowing the spider to walk on my hands. Once the spider walked on my hands I was cured.

  • @astridgruber9316

You will get symptom substitition, that means, if you don't go to the root of the fear, but, through ie exposure, you get rid of this fear, you will get big (!) problems because then the subconscious will create a bigger problem in another area. Because the root of the symptom wants to heal.

Exposure therapy is a phenomenal way to treat people. It shouldn't be complete exposure, but exposing them to their fear, little by little, the fear subsides to a tolerable amount of fear.

  • @annunakkk1
    @annunakkk1 ปีที่แล้ว

I have 2 fear responses. Flight and total immersion. Neither 1 ever has actual positive results. If flight will work I'll take it. Seems like that's rarely the case though. I'll flee from interaction with people that will ultimately be harmless. But in real danger I'll run right into it willingly and unafraid. I'll make a decision, and burst into it even if I know I'll be severely injured. But interpersonal relationships, and the fear of that seems way more frightening than running head on into a speeding vehicle. Because the former continues to torment you, the latter is over in seconds.

I think this unfortunately only works for fears that correspond to some concrete thing in the outside world, not for more abstract fears like fear of losing your job, fear of homelessness, loneliness, sickness, mental illness etc.

As a long time student of the mind, I have a problem with these analogies. First of all, in exposure therapy, it is most optimal to expose them to the actual source of their fear-to the 'memory trace' not a car in actually in motion that simulated running them over in the first place, though that would be most ideal.
I hope the readers here will understand the difference between a 'unconditioned' source and response and a 'conditioned' source and response.
In this experiment- Behaviorist Dr. John B. Watson determined that 'fear,' is learned. He put a few animals in front of 9 month old Little Albert. A rabbit, a rat and Little Albert seemed happy about them, as he touched them and smiled and everything was fine and John let him sit there enjoying the company of these animals for a while, then the moment little Albert reached out to touch them, Dr Watson rang a very loud bell and it startled Little Albert with a jolt, and he jerked back from them. After a few moments, little Albert reached out again to the animals and Dr. Watson rang the bell loudly at the moment Little Albert was reaching for them. This occurred a time or two more and this time when John rang the bell, Little Albert started crying and from that moment on he wanted nothing to do with the animals. John put the rat in front of him and he pulled back and started crying again. John put on a furry mask and drew close to Little Albert, and he pulled back and started crying. John's nurse laid down a furry coat in front of Little Albert and he squirmed and started crying.
Of course, today they wouldn't do an experiment like this. But According to Dr Watson, the experimented proved that 'fear' is a learned behavior.
How would a Psychoanalyst go about treating a child or an adult with a fear like this. What is the real source of fear? Would a therapist 'run exposure therapy on some animals or something that represents an animal and try to desensitize the individual?
The fact is, the real source of fear is often hidden from view. If you think the animals in this experiment are the real source of fear, then you are incorrect.
Little Albert didn't have an issue with the animals, but he did have a problem with the sound of loud bells. Now to discover this without knowing the story, requires some different kinds of training.
If someone says their afraid of spiders, I'd look for a mischievous brother who slipped a spiders or tow down their shirt- or into their bed. The stimulus is rarely what you think it is going to be.

I faced my phobia of driving - I decided I would rather die than be stuck isolated on the farm.
    Do or die.
The incentive was high enough that to me the risk of death from driving didn’t matter. I was guaranteed death if I didn’t.
If fear is stopping you from having the life that you want. Then you’ll never live unless you overcome it.
I’d like to live before I die.
