Ah so the whole arm almost acts like a pendulum. It spreads out the work load with the fingers and creates an ergonomic natural means to play continuous quarter notes especially in this style.
I often wondered about this and assumed it had something to do with a means to allow a larger ‘contact patch’ with how much finger comes in contact with the string. Similar to classical guitar where a fuller and more ‘sweet’ tone comes from the string contacting the left corner of the fingertip and exiting the tip or right side of the nail. As in we ‘press through the string vs pluck’. And similarly classical guitarist generally think of the whole arm all the way to the base of ones spine being involved to play a note. Interesting stuff. Thanks

Thats a very good summary of what this is, thank you! We do use more surface area on the side of the finger for comping, in a way that you've described classical guitarists produce notes

Thank you Zoltan! As I understand the big muscles of the body produce the motion. This motion could produce a great sound but personally for me only in middle tempos. What do you do with fast tempos? Fingers could be in time but the whole arm and beck couldn’t, could it?

Hi, its a good question, the way it happens for me is that my arm from the shoulder down is doing small movements in approx. half time of the actual tempo and my fingers alternate plucking, playing the fast time. Hope this helps..

Is that a Fishman FCL pickup on the bass?

Just bought one to install on my starter bass. Thinking it can only help the sound, since I was reluctant to to invest thousands in a pro quality upright bass cuz I've only been playing a week or so 😕. What are your impressions of the FCL?

    • @zoltansbasslounge

@@bustabass9025 It is a great pick up, but it will give you the sound of the instrument you put it on. Good thing to do with a starter bass is to get it set up properly and if there's a ridge in the finger board, get that removed and smoothed out by a luthier..that will help the sound
