Three cameramen show up with their cameras at a wedding Two have high end DSLR’s One has an iphone 12 Pro Max rig, and everyone looks at him funny When the event is finished the two cameramen with the high end DSLR’s tell the client they will send him all the processed photos and videos within a couple weeks The iphone rig cameraman asks the client if he’d like to have the high quality products air dropped right now into his iphone ......
I gave that setup a shot and used Canon L lenses and while I love the cages and system BeastGrip offers the adapter just wasn't a good investment. The image was soft and needed considerably extra light indoors. The image from my iPhone lenses themselves looked better compared to a Canon 50mm 1.2 mounted with the with the adapter.
This was well done! Subbed. Please consider making a follow-up comparing an iPhone+DOF MK2+cinelens rig to a DSLR cinema rig; it could go a very long way grabbing the attention of phone-cinema-rig fence sitters wondering about the quality difference and editing workflow between those two setups. I'm personally interested in finding out the differences in low light video, as well as the differences in pro features, resolution, and the maximum post color grading capabilities of each rig type.
That is one amazing rig! I shoot alot of mobile films in my channel and this just gives it another level of filming. Thanks for sharing this. Nicely done!
I still believe the cost to set this up and use an actual lens on iPhone is unreasonable. Because the only reason I would want to buy this one is if I do not have the budget to buy a DSLR. And if the BeastGrip Cage + DOF adapter costs more than $400 (not considering the cost of lenses here) and I get 20% less light into the iPhone camera lens because of the adapter, I would much rather buy an entry level DSLR if all I’m looking for is shallow depth of field.
For me, I rather use mobile lenses as they are meant to build for smartphone camera sensor in the first place. In the case of Beastgrip, the Beastcage and the 3x Tele Conversion Lens alongside the Kenko 0.75x Wide Lens is more than sufficient enough.
Great review, as always. What I can't get my head around is using the camera lenses with a phone. What would be great is a comparison between something like the rig you show here vs using a black magic, or DSLR, etc.,
I’m on the fence with DOF adaptor like image quality it gives but it add more bulk only see using for serious narrative film, commercials, etc but seems take make the iPhone filmmaking more like DSLR filmmaking but I admit No Hard Feelings first time I can say iPhone footage look really cinematic
iPhoneographers I’m good heard from me the DOF is just too much extra gear for me but I respect the look it give your footage just can’t get over how it makes your camera look more like DSLR I want to keep mobile filmmaking as minimalist as possible but thanks!
I gave it some thought DOF is amazing but I want keep things lean & mobile think that is very unique I know you don’t get that nice shallow DOF but I might sound crazy I think that everything in focus going to be next cinematic look that going take off I know background in focus can distract audience from the main subject but think as long as you have great story it want mater as much plus think background in focus can add more to the scene just my perspective like know your perspective a thanks!
Yeah I enjoyed learning about this tool, but I'm a "no" to this kind of set up. I have a dslr. The reason I do video recording on my iphones is to have a portable setup. I'm not interested in trying to add a CINE lens to my iphone. I can just do that with my DSLR. Great video though Blake.
Depends which ones you have. They need to be full frame. Many of the Art lenses are APS-C. Then you would need to use a traditional camera to first set the aperture since it’s electronic. Typically wide open is best or a stop down. From there you use the phone camera app to set exposure and you’d be good to go.
HOW DO THE DOF ADAPTER CONECT TO CAGE IS IT USING A 37MM THEAD SCREW IN ?? AND WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT USING WITH OUT DOF ADAPTER WHAT LENS WOULD YOU USE ON ITS OWN AND DO IT HAVE TO BE 37MM TO ?? MY FRIEND TOP INTRESTING VIDEO THANK YOU.
Good stuff. I have the Beastrail system with a Canon 50 mm 1.4 It' looks good. I'd love to get a cinema lens to see what that would look like. How do you like the look?
Iphone can make slow 240 fps. 4k videos. Can make streaming, its a many things of possibilities. You can edit videos from iphone... so its a great tool. I have my mirror less, i prefer use my iphone for mobility. But maybe when i will need this thing i will buy this one
The Mavis app seems to perform much better than Filmic Pro. I would love to see a video where you were to compare these 2 apps. These apps feel a bit like flying a plane (filmic pro), compared to be flying the NASA shuttle to space (MAVIS App) could/would likely feel. The options in Mavis are more sound and come across being made by pros from the Hollywood film industry, versus the Filmic pro with its Jitter issues on playback, a bit like mobile phone people group, who tried very hard to make it look like a real filmmaker app, which a Hollywood DP would use, but it kind of only looks interface wise like it,... but does not perform well, ...hence that jitter coming from recompressing clips,... which apparently is causing that unfixable jitter on playback,... after creating clips with filmic pro. Mavis seems to leave the original iPhone clips with its original apple iPhone compression intact in the background, and shows us a processed preview only,....so only the live preview is processed through the app's compression and options. The amazing thing seems to be, that Mavis is the only app out there, which is not producing any jitter whatsoever. The moment app, for example, has also jitter due to their post-processing of compression on the iPhone clips. I would be curious about what your experience would become comparing that mavis app to others, and see what footage you would be able to produce.
We like Mavis and use it as well. But our go to by far is filmic pro. It can be subjective as far as the interface goes, but we like it better than Mavis. And TBH, if you look across the filmmaking industry filmic pro is far and away the leader. Again, not knocking Mavis at all it’s a good app. And there’s some stuff in it that we do like over filmic pro. In the end you can get good results with both. We don’t have any issues with jitter that you are referring to with any apps. One of the bigger advantages to using a third-party app is so you get higher bit rates and so you don’t get the lower quality that the simple Apple compression provides. We have been planning on doing some comparisons and so thanks for the suggestion!
All these cool accessories are expensive. Plus it’s bulky and heavy, it’s very cumbersome to use or moves around. I rather use DJi Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal to get smooth videos. As far as DOF, I’m not really into it because it’s hard to get with a phone. I rather use full frame DSLR which I already have. Spending more money on more accessories that I only be using few times in a year may not a good idea.
The names are interchangeable, but typically the individual rods are called… rods. Like 15mm rods and rod clamps. But the system as a whole can be called a rail system.

SO AMAZING what can be done w an iPhone!! GRT film style w that lens wow 🤩

Great suggestions and definitely working on something like that. :) Thanks for watching!
Adding cinema lenses to your iPhone.
I thought the while mobile cinematography theme is based on the portability aspect of it. I would never do this
That is one amazing rig! I shoot alot of mobile films in my channel and this just gives it another level of filming. Thanks for sharing this. Nicely done!
Very interesting piece of kit! Center of balance make the most sense.
Thanks for the review.
Have a great day and be safe out there!

24mm lense plus the native 28mm in the iphone equal 52mm ?
Hi moondog lens 37 mm and 12.5 mm lens both are important or single lens enough... film making purpose tell me
I’m on the fence with DOF adaptor like image quality it gives but it add more bulk only see using for serious narrative film, commercials, etc but seems take make the iPhone filmmaking more like DSLR filmmaking but I admit No Hard Feelings first time I can say iPhone footage look really cinematic
Yeah it’s just a different way to work, but it’s cool to have the ability depending on what your needs are.
iPhoneographers I’m good heard from me the DOF is just too much extra gear for me but I respect the look it give your footage just can’t get over how it makes your camera look more like DSLR I want to keep mobile filmmaking as minimalist as possible but thanks!

Great video. Would I be able to use the EF mount Sigma lenses with the DOFMK2?

Found mistake. 4.50 , - first you must tighten ring to the lens, and then ring to rail.

Can you put that on a DJI Ronin Gimbal? Not sure about Osmo gimbal
Good stuff. I have the Beastrail system with a Canon 50 mm 1.4 It' looks good. I'd love to get a cinema lens to see what that would look like. How do you like the look?
Can I use it for photography with big lenses ?
Yes you could, but It’s best for longer lens stuff not wider shots.
On the price of all that stuff (DOF adaptor, grip, cage etc.) you can buy a normal camera body to use instead of a phone... :D
Iphone can make slow 240 fps. 4k videos. Can make streaming, its a many things of possibilities. You can edit videos from iphone... so its a great tool. I have my mirror less, i prefer use my iphone for mobility. But maybe when i will need this thing i will buy this one
Please iphone se 2 with moment lens 🙏
Doesn't beastgrip make a cage for Android that would work for the dof...?
Maybe I'll just 3d print a custom design.
Beast grip should just make a gimbal that could go with all these gears

Is that Joe Ballad?
Rod system? I thought it was a rail system.
The names are interchangeable, but typically the individual rods are called… rods. Like 15mm rods and rod clamps. But the system as a whole can be called a rail system.
It will give bokeh on video or not?
It is almost not like on dslr bokeh or same ?
Yes it’s main function is to create shallow DOF using traditional lenses. It is very shallow and can definitely mimic a DSLR DOF look.
@@iphoneographers it is how much cost
It’s around $270 USD. Link in the description.
Biggest problem with Beastgrip is there's no Android cage.
Yeah we asked them why that is and it’s because there’s just too many Android devices to keep up with, so the Beastgrip Pro is their universal option.
First!!!
