This god reminds me a lot of Beorn from Tolkien's book "The Hobbit". Veles took the form of a bear and Beorn was a skinchanger who usually presented himself to others as great, fierce black bear. Beorn also protected the woods in which he lived, from The Misty Mountains to Mirkwood, He had a house in the woods and domestic animals that he didn't slaughter, but protected them in the best way he could. Yes, they are very similar, and as Tolkien knew a great deal of many mythologies, I do not doubt that Beorn was inspired by Veles. Great video!
For many years I've been searching for spiritual meaning in my life. I've studied many religions, yet couldn't find my place. But, now, I believe that I have. Veles calls out to me in a vary deep and meaningful way. Thank you for such a wonderful video. Please keep up on the great work. ❤😊
In my opinion Veles and Perun are equals. Perun rules heavens and fire, Veles rules earth and water and humanity and most living things are stuck in between where they co-rule. It is imperative for our existence that they remain in balance because if either of them becomes too strong, it will spell disaster for us. Too strong Perun means drought and wild fires and too strong Veles means floods.
In Croatia near Rijeka there is a mountain peak called Perun, under that peak by the sea there is a place called Volosko...so the ancient gods are still with us;)
This was absolutely amazing! The most insightful information on Veles that I can listen to while doing stuff (instead of reading). Brought some really juicy new stuff I didn't know to my attention! Sub-worthy!
Interesting video. One peeve I have is that you talk about some "Druid beliefs", which as far I know not recorded by anyone except the Romans (and in little detail). I can only assume you are conflating Druids with new-age pagan beliefs. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
In this case they are talking of Slavic Pagan druidism, which often acknowledges several forms of slavic culture and beliefs prior to christianity, and is a bit more fluid than more western variations from my understanding. The slavs also had a considerable amount of trade through several routes also used by the Greco-Roman and Nordic peoples, so there is acknowledgement among scholars to be some blending of mythos due to this and due to the pagan slavs of old being more orally traditional than newer forms of their Culture, which is also sadly why some parts of that history were erased more thoroughly than others regretfully. Hope that helps.
@@sleeplesssongbird7625 Let's also not forget that the Celts were basically everywhere in europe at the time. There is heavy intermixing between celts and slavs, especially in places like Czechia and some parts of the balkans.
Thanks for answering a question I had in the back of my mind for a while! I was right, the god’s name IS related to Volossya, Ukrainian for “hair”! Great video! I look forward to watching your others.

What about the Greek Pan, a horned God? Then there’s the Hindu/Vedic deity Pashupati who is also horned God. Thank you for this information by the way. So refreshing to run into someone who has done their own independent research and who can provide additional information, besides just a typical mainstream characteristics and traits that are associated with Veles. The Billygoat sacrifice ritual, i don’t believe it originated from Slavic tradition. I believe it comes from the Judaism/Hebrew tradition. The sacrificial billygoat tradition was probably introduced to Slavic people through Christianity/Abrahamism
1. Are you sure you are not mixing Veles with Leshy? 2. Perun and Veles were never enemies, we barely know about the two. 3. Veles is not a forest god, he is a god of villagers, and serves the purpose of helping them with cattle and other stock. 4. He might be perceived as 'forest', 'dark' god LATER in time as Orthodox monks and general population grow distant with forests and nature worship. 5. Honestly we know VERY little about Veles, from actual proof. 6. Ridiculous etymology study tbh... Bulgars? India? Are we still talking about Slavic era? Volos is the original most probable name, whereas Volkhv is the one who is a 'pastor'. The whole 'master of the dead' thing is a comparison to other cultures based on that realm of the dead is like a pasture - it's ridiculous, because - again - we are talking about commonfolk deity, not a nobility deity.
Indo-European 'val' which means 'wool'...what? Slavic languages belong to a different branch of Indo-European languages, why are you looking for English related etymology?
Sounds like you guys just took a bunch of stuff from Indian myths and now they are 'facts' of our myths ))) Veles was never a serpent, it's actually making me upset you say that. There is a reason he became a SAINT, as Saint Vlasy, he was always a good guy for farmers. Perun also became a SAINT as Saint Iliya. In the minds of people there was never any opposition. The only dark god mentioned by historians is Chernobog. Yuletide, Shrovetide were never mentioned anywhere until recently, and most likely are just a theory.
The reason merchants, might have worshipped Veles - is because they sold cattle and may be even used it for transportation. There is no additional tasks he acquired because of them worshipping him.

The word used for that ritual today is kurban. This is the turkish word for it, so it's probably at least partially derived from abrahamic traditions.
